Macan vs. Cayenne: Size

If you need or want the larger SUV, choose the Cayenne. Both luxury vehicles seat five passengers and include two rows, but the Cayenne includes significantly more space. Its exterior length stretches an additional eight inches. In terms of height, the Macan is three inches shorter than the Cayenne. The 2024 Porsche Macan's cargo capacity is seven cubic feet less than the Cayenne. The Cayenne can also tow 7,700 lbs., which is nearly 75% more than the Macan.

Macan vs. Cayenne: Price

If a lower price tag is your top priority, pick the Macan. The 2024 Cayenne's base trim level costs over $18,000 more than the 2024 Macan base. At the top ends of their trims, the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid starts at $146,900 MSRP and the Macan GTS starts at $86,800 MSRP.

Macan vs. Cayenne: Features

Porsche is well-known for engine performance. This is representative in the Macan and Cayenne. The six-cylinder 2024 Macan GTS can eclipse the 0-60 mark in 4.3 seconds (4.1 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package) with a top track speed of 169 mph. The eight-cylinder Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid is even faster: 0-60 in 3.5 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package and 183 mph top track speed.

The Cayenne comes in five trims, including three plug-in hybrid (the E-Hybrid) varieties. The 2023 E-Hybrid got up to approximately 40 MPG when the battery was utilized - perfect for navigating eastern Pennsylvania's busy streets. The 2024 EPA-estimate is not yet available, but the latest battery is known to completely charge in as little as 2.5 hours.

The Macan has four trims, including the mid-level Macan T added last year. The Macan doesn't have an E-Hybrid variant, and is purely an SUV. The Cayenne also comes in a coupe body style, offering its own set of five trims.

Android users should choose the Cayenne. Every Cayenne has Porsche Connect Plus, which includes a Wi-Fi hotspot as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Inside the Macan, a Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay also come standard, but no model offers Android Auto.

The Cayenne cockpit has been redesigned for 2024, including a digital 12.6-inch instrument cluster and an optional optimized head-up display. There is also a standard 12.3-inch central Porsche Communication Management (PCM) display and an available 10.9-inch display on the passenger side that can stream video content.

The 2024 Macan features a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, an available $3,660 Premium Plus Package adds heated front and rear seats, adaptive headlights, and a 14-speaker audio system.

Macan vs. Cayenne: Reliability

According to J.D. Power, the 2024 Porsche Cayenne scored an 81 (out of 100) in "Quality & Reliability." Criteria includes vehicle owner experiences in areas of defects, malfunctions, and design flaws. The Cayenne's 81 overall makes it tied for the second-highest rated upper midsize premium SUV. The Macan scored an 84 in Quality & Reliability, and it's 85 overall tied it with the BMW X4 for top-rated compact premium SUV.

Macan vs. Cayenne: Safety

The new Macan and Cayenne each come with a large amount of standard safety features, such as: Airbags for all passengers, Anti-Theft Systems, Anti-Lock Brakes, Rear Parking Aid, Stability Control, and Traction Control. However, the base Cayenne model comes with two important safety items not available in the base Macan:

• Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP) - consists of side impact protection elements in the doors, and thorax airbags integrated into the side bolster of each front seat.
• Warn and Brake Assist* - detects the risk of collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. It also initiates a warning or emergency braking if necessary.

*Warn and Brake Assist cannot prevent most collisions, although it may help to reduce their severity. In addition, Warn and Brake Assist may not detect every object in the road. The system may not operate if certain evasive maneuvers are performed by the driver.

It's worth noting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety haven't conducted crash test reviews for the Macan and Cayenne. This is typical for vehicles in their price ranges. 

Macan vs. Cayenne: Which Should You Buy?

So, which is better, the Macan or the Cayenne? The answer depends on your priorities. If they're getting into a Porsche at a relatively low price and reliability, the Macan is better. If they're space and features, the Cayenne is better.
