Emilio Achacoso was two-time captain of the Mapua Cardinals in collegiate basketball in the early 1950's.

He went on to play at the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) and was initially suspended for joining for a Chinese team in an Asian Tour without permission. When his suspension was lifted, Achacoso was tapped by the YCO Painters. He later earned a slot in the Philippine Team in the 1968 Asian Games in Tokyo where the Philippines trounced host Japan for the gold. Achacoso was also part of the team that bagged the gold in the Basketball World Cup in Chile in 1959. The same team went to Rome for the Olympics in 1960 where the Philippines placed 11th. That same year, the team dominated the 1st Asian Basketball Confederation (later known as FIBA Asia) in Manila with an 11-0 performance.
