Finally a biography on the mysterious Max Schreck has been published in Germany, "Max Schreck - Gespenstertheater" (Theatre of Ghosts).

Kaum hatte Hutter die Brücke überschritten, da ergriffen ihn die unheimlichen Gesichte, von denen er mir oft erzählt hat.

Max
I am resubmitting this post:
I don't know what happened. I am getting use to my new laptop and I guess I deleted this post!
Anyway - in short - looking for signature of Max Schreck. Never encountered one. No one knows what it looks like. Would even like to see a copy of one. Collected silent film autographs and memorabilia for more than 20 years. Murnau is also very rare.
Thanks
Tony

Re: Max
Well, Max didn't really look all that approachable. And just how big was that fan club at the time?ASusnick wrote:I have collected silent film autograph for more than 20 years and have never encountered a Max Schreck signature on a photo, letter or even a contract. Since you are in Berlin, maybe you can help me.
Thanks!

RICHARD M ROBERTS (Gee Mr Shreck, you were really repulsive in your last picture)

You know, that kind of stuff is what I love about Nitrateville... ^^ASusnick wrote:I have collected silent film autograph for more than 20 years and have never encountered a Max Schreck signature on a photo, letter or even a contract. If I get some information, I'll post it here...

Say, Mr. Susnick, just for the curiosity: what is your most treasured autograph? Do you have one of Erich von Stroheim as well?

Fan Club
Yes Mr. Roberts - there was a Schreck fan club. In fact, he was on almost every cover of Tiger Beat magazine from 1920-1926. Some of the cover stories: "Win a Trip to Germany to Kiss Max" and "Max and Murnau - What's Going on Behind the Camera?"
Hi Einar - For my favorite I received personally is a letter from Buddy Rogers talking about Wings, how he was a little intimidated by William Wellman and I think touching because he mentions sadness his old Wing's friends are gone. Got a letter from Burgess Meredith mentioning Paulette Goddard and that Charlie Chaplin was his favorite silent film star!
As far as vintage autographs - a D.W. Griffith check he wrote for $1500 in the 1940's. That seems like a good chunk of change for him to spend that time in his life.
Von Stroheim is not that rare, but is in demand and can command a good price.
Thanks for your interest.

Re: Max Schreck
I've always wondered why there hasn't been a bigger demand for GESPENSTERTHEATER to receive an English translation. I'm sure anybody with an interest in horror history would welcome the opportunity to read the life story of one of the genre's most elusive actors.
