Rumour: Metal Gear Solid 4, 5, and Peace Walker May Be Included In Vol. 2 Collection

I'm starting a new rumor. Volume 2 will include MGS 4, 5, and TWIN SNAKES. You heard it here first, from a totally reliable source 😏

MGSV is a huge game... it would be quite amazing to see that able to fit in one package with two other full-scale games.

inb4 anyone might say “MGSV wouldn’t be able to run on Switch!”

It was on PS3 and 360 as well. If it couldn’t run on Switch at all for whatever reason then it’d be pretty embarrassing.

MGSV would actually work really well on the Switch. It's a fantastic-looking game, but it's actually pretty old. So it's not out of the realm of possibility for it to come to the Switch.

I hope they will do more than just a mere port/emulation of Peace Walker, as I feel the "colorization" is quite "off" as it is.

Well, if they would just compress the audio on MGS4 (and I mean with care, don’t just make 128kbs mp3’s like barbarians) then you can fit that in a collection with V and GZ.

@StarPoint It's not a matter of being old or new, different things have to be considered like how compatible is the engine with the system. However, I'm pretty sure that it's possible because, as someone mentioned, there was a PS3/360 version. I'm actually more worried about MGS4 as that thing was specially made for the PS3 and it had certain things that only happened on that game like loading chapters after an hour and stuff like that.

Edit: I do remember reading somewhere that the game could also run perfectly on 360 but the disk format of that time couldn't handle it, only the PS3. So maybe it isn't as hard or problematic as I think.

Oh yes, please. I've already preordered Vol 1 yesterday, and I'd buy Vol 2 if it has MGS4, and only for that game, playing it on the Switch would be fantastic. V is incomplete, and that ending is a mess, and Peace Walker is not as good as some people say it is. And, for the writer of the article, Ground Zeroes is also included in those placeholder buttons, and, that's the best part of V, actually.

@gurtifus it is, and it deserves a re-release. I guess they'll do a Vol 3, that includes the non canonical games, and special versions of the games, like Twin Snakes or Snake Eater 3D.

@jedisquidward People forget it came to PS3 and 360 too. Switch can manage it.

I'm going to keep my expectations grounded and assume Vol 2. is just going to be the PSP games, and if we're lucky, they'll be in HD.

These include Metal Gear Ac!d, Metal Gear Ac!d 2, Portable Ops, and Peace Walker.

I don't really miss MGS4 much these days, I played it to death back on the PS3 and I think Phantom Pain just does everything so much better.

PW is my favorite in the MGS series. Never played MGS 4. And MGS 5 was fine, but you can tell Konami shut development down early, the game's ending feels rushed.

@Edu23XWiiU Can you imagine if they went the extra mile and finish the lost Chapter 3 of MGSV?

I'm sure Kojima's never coming back but there had to be enough unfinished assists and a script to make it possible.

@gurtifus Yes it is but Twin Snakes has never been re-released and a port has been wanted for ages. Also, Twin Snakes is a pretty major remake, to the point of really being like a new game. The cutscenes in particular went for an almost Matrix-style action movie instead of the somber dramatic tone of the original.

It would have been cool if they had vol 1 be the Solid Snake arc (Metal gear 1+2, MGS 1, 2 and 4) and have Vol 2 be the Big Boss arc (Mgs 3, Portable, Peace Walker, Ground Zero and 5)
And then a vol 3 containing everything else (revengeance, Acid 1+2 etc, maybe Twin Snake and perhaps for a good laugh Survive 🤣)
I don't know if I'd call this a complaint per say but just something I was thinking.

Metal Gear Solid is coming back. Will there be a new Metal Gear Solid game I do not think so. Long time not.

Sounds good. It'd be nice to rescue MGS 4 from its PS3 isolation. At least MGS V is available on more platforms, including PC.

I do think MGS 4 is kind of a mess, structurally. And the cinematic-to-gameplay balance is totally broken in the final third. As for MGS V, it's got great controls, mechanics, and feel, but the sandbox open world is mostly wasted and the whole thing was clearly rushed and incomplete. I think it's mostly interesting as a stepping stone towards Death Stranding, where the open world approach finally bloomed into something compelling and Kojima actually told his bombastic story the way he's used to doing it, through big interactive story moments and cinematics, and not through drama-deflating optional audio logs. I know some people liked the audio logs because it meant fewer cinematics, but frankly, I'm not sure what you're doing playing Kojima games if you're not into the profound cheese of his storytelling.

Which is why MGS 2 is clearly the best one, of course.

I think MGS4 would be quite doable on Switch rather easily (by all accounts in recent interviews they stated they had the game running on Xbox 360). But, MGS4 is an investment of a game to say the least... you need to be familiar with at LEAST MGS1-3 before playing and that is before we talk about Portable Ops, or the original Metal Gear games. As for MGSV... I'm meh on it. I think it do well on Switch with its more mission selection styled structure than the linear storytelling of the previous games. It is basically large scale Peace Walker.

@sketchturner I think we need to give up on Twin Snakes ever getting a major rerelease. With how things ended for Silicon Knights who knows what legal issues are around that title. Let alone all the little Nintendo Easter eggs that would need to be removed from the game.

And Acid too, right? Like I figured once it was volume 1 that they were just saving metal gear acid for volume 2

@Angelic_Lapras_King It's not impossible for MGSV to come to Switch in some form, it's just highly unlikely in this case.

Great ports do come to the Switch, but that's because of the great devs behind them that put forth a lot of effort to make it happen (Witcher 3 and Alien Isolation are great example of this). Given their track record, I just don't think Konami cares that much.

Similar to how Rockstar games released L.A. Noire on Switch a long time ago and then we never got another game from them besides the poorly received PS2 collection that was handled by another company, I just don't see Konami hustling to make Switch owners happy.

MGSV and GZ could run on the Switch, though it'll probably be rough. The 360 version wasn't great lol.

If they release MGS4 on Switch I'll admit that the Switch hardware is fine and it should stand as-is forever. No more consoles. Switch can do it all.

@Wexter I think Twin Snakes re-release or remake is still a possibility. Far more possible than MGS4 coming to Switch, at least.

If I recall correctly, the Nintendo references in Twin Snakes are just a few 3D assets like Mario figures and a gamecube controller right? It wouldn't be the first time Konami replaced some assets for a re-release, they did it with MGS3DS, but in reverse (they replaced the Kerotan frogs with Yoshi figures). Heck, if Twin Snakes did get re-released, they could just keep it a Nintendo exclusive.

Nothing has came of it that we know of, but a few years ago, Denis Dyack (founder of Silicon Knights) confirmed it's possible Twin Snakes could come to the Switch, which is kind of interesting he would even say that.

I would normally say it would be silly for a company to re-release the original version of a game and then release a remake shortly after, but look what happened with the re-release of P3P and the leak about the Persona 3 remake in the works, so it's certainly possible.

@StarPoint Metal Gear Solid V was also on PS3...it was not good but it was there so the game could in theory run on the Switch though depending on who ports the game, though it is unlikely it would run at a smooth 60fps and it would have lower texture quality.

What, no Ground Zeroes?

These collections seem to be getting more expensive and lazy, and less complete and physical every generation. Still, I'd love to replay Snake Eater. Last time I played it was on 3ds. Never completed an MGS game after that, so if one day they do it RIGHT, and combine the collections, for a decent price, with some art book or whatever, I might get that. For now, maybe a standalone of Snake Eater.

@StarPoint There's no way MGSV is ever coming to Switch.
First off, it's a huge open world game that has three distinct maps that have different layouts with huge amount of enemies with their own scripting paths that vary with how many ways you raid their guard posts.

Secondly, the game has an online PvP mode in the form of Forward Operating Base missions where the resources you gather in the main open world maps like Afghanistan and Africa go towards building your main base, weapons/equipment, and forward operating base that you use to defend or raid other people's bases and steal their staff as well their resources. Sometimes you can encounter another player and have to either defend your base by eliminating them or raid their base while having to battle them. Sometimes you can make nuclear weapons and you either steal them or disarm them yourself. Since these modes use online servers, and we know how crappy the Switch's online functionality is when it comes to peer-to-peer connections especially overseas here.

That means it's unlikely to function properly and this whole system is a core feature of the game that is directly tied to what the game is built around. There's even a cutscene that also plays a part into the theme of the series about nuclear disarmament, so if the online functionality is not working because of the Switch's outdated online structure. You'd be cutting out a decent chunk of the game if this online operating base feature were removed.

And lastly, MGSV also shipped with a separate multiplayer mode called, "Metal Gear Online" that would also would be difficult to run on Switch's online and if many people aren't playing it then there's no point in having it. If Konami wasn't able to have MGSV launch on Wii U due to bad hardware specs when it first came out, then I doubt it will come to Switch since there would be a lot that would need too be either cut or readjusted to fit the limited hardware space. That's essentially sacrificing a good chunk of the original product.

@Astral-Grain The online portion of MGSV prevents that from happening. Even if they somehow did, the game would be significantly downgraded and the MGSV version of the collection would be download only with what I imagine taking up a lot of gigs of space.

I'm not someone who knows anything about Metal Gear, but wasn't there also a Game Boy Color game too? Is that going to fit in anywhere or are they just going to forget about it. As a newcomer it would be nice to have ALL of them available in the same place

@russell-marlow Sorry, I made a few comments and I'm not sure which one you're replying to.

MGSV is a pretty well optimized game, I was surprised how well it ran and how good it looked on my potato computer back when it released, so I think it's possible. However, I don't think it's likely Konami would put forth the effort to port MGSV to Switch.

I personally never touched the online aspects of MGSV, so I think they could easily remove them if they wanted and it wouldn't hinder the singleplay experience much. Still, I don't personally have hope it will come to Switch, and since I already have it on Steam Deck and Xbox, I don't care either way.

Edit: I didn't really address your whole comment so let me do that now.

The PC version of MGSV is only 28 GB, and with texture compression, I'm positive they could fit the game on one cart, assuming they were motivated to do so. Again, I don't think they are, but in the file size aspect, it's technically very possible.

Similarly, the PC version of The Witcher 3 is a whopping 50 GB, but CDPR was able to compress the files and fit the entire game and DLC on to a Switch cartridge. This is a rare case since it costs the company more to opt for the higher capacity cartridges, hence why so many physical games still require a big download, but it can be done if the company is committed enough.

Ok, regarding my previous post for this article (#5); MGS 2 and 3 looks kinda "off" on my OLED PS Vita screen too.

I'm beginning to think - because I also noticed it when I played Street Fight Alpha 3 Max and Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower on my Vita vs Street Fighter Alpha 3 and the 3 first Darkstalkers games on my Switch Lite - that screen technology has advanced quite a lot since the OLED Vita was introduced in late 2011.

In fact so much that a good LCD (like the one on the Switch Lite)
actually looks better than an OLED screen originating from 2011.

Imo MGS 2 and 3 looks just as "off" as Peace Walker on my Vita (could have something to do with the "nature" of OLED screens, with their "unnaturally" "popping" arcade game like color code though).

One thing that WILL be better in a Switch port of Peace Walker will be the framerate. The PSP version (which is the one I play on my Vita) has a framerate of around a measly 20 fps, while the 2011 remaster (for PS3 and Xbox 360) runs at a solid 60 fps (those look bad though - but that's what happens when you port a PSP game to TV screen consoles with out touching up the textures and the geometry).

MGS4 would feel like magic to me on Switch. Even more so than V would.

As long as they don't end up shafting Metal Gear: Ghost Babel from the GBC - got to make sure that's in one of these collections or I'll be kicking off!

I would hope for Rising the most as I feel it's the best post MGS3 Metal Gear

Why would 5 be in V2?
Five is current gen/last gen and way too big of a file size for a collection.

Will it require an update to add in everything?

i played and loved every second of MGS 1-4, probably the gaming experience of my life, and im very interested in playing 5 and the many "spinoff" games. 👍 also MGS4 is like an insane month long dream i had 15 years ago, and ive never returned but would really like to.

The download size of such a thing would be a freaking monstrosity, adding to that the kind of work it would need for such a port, I don't see Konami going with a switch native version for such an endeavour. Most likely they would use a cloud release like Kingdom Hearts...which ironically enough, might be the very thing the first volume needs to get in the good graces of everyone.

Sure, you need to download 50 GB of junk for a 2 GB card, but at least you will have that junk on your system at all times and not require a constant stream and connection.

@Angelic_Lapras_King There is no lost Chapter 3, there's nothing in the files other than a title card. If any actual development went into it, we'd know. MGSV's Chapter 2 is the epilogue, like Chapter 5 in Peace Walker.

With Volume 1 not even including all of the content on the cartridge, if this ends up being real, I'll probably pass on it too. Such a shame as well. I was hyped for the return of Metal Gear and would have gladly bought the games again on Switch, even if I already own The Legacy Collection on PS3.

@Serpenterror I'd much prefer Revengence over MGSV for Switch. The game is great and P* games run smooth as butter for the most part on Switch. That and I think it is a nice epilogue to MGS4 dealing with the fallout of that game and Raiden. Thematically it would be an instant fit. I approve that list!!!

@sketchturner i heard volume 3 is gonna be MGS touch, MGS social ops, MGS Mobile from the n gage and the 3ds port of MGS3 running at constant double vision mode at native resolution.

I am replaying MGS5 right now on my PS5. The game is fantastic and is years ahead of its time. If it were released today, it would still be a high-quality modern experience. It's just a shame the game is incomplete.

Peace Walker although apparently not very popular outside Japan sold almost 575,000 copies in the first 2 weeks in Japan. Kinda hope that Konami will touch it up a bit graphically (other than the 60 fps treatment it had in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PS3 and Xbox 360).

I've been playing the PSP version on my Vita at its 20 fps for a couple of hours today and it's still a really great game, when you get adjusted to the low fidelity graphics (and framerate).

The artwork is great for a PSP game and has that special asian/japanese aesthetic that you also see in Resident Evil games and the earliest Bruce Lee films among others.

Probably a 120g download with 3.1g on the Physical cart. Don't say good Ole Konami don't luv ya!

I’d assume we’d also get rising 1 and 2 along with the ones above. I hope that’s the case because I’ve yet to play those and they look absolutely stellar.

Vol 2. will almost certainly be MGS4, Portable Ops, and Peace Walker.

Maybe, if we're lucky, we'll get VR Missions, AC!D 1/2, and Ghost Babel as extras.

I can tell you with 100% certainty, though, that there will never be an MGS x Batman game.

Peace Walker, 4, and V are all games Switch can handle so wouldn’t be surprised we got them eventually too.

That said you can keep Survive. Won’t mind a port of Rising though.

@Olliemar28 A good point. Mgs4 was actually my first metal gear and I thought it was amazing, I had no idea what was going on, and when Big Boss showed up my first thought was 'who the hell is big boss?', but I was entertained 😅

@Angelic_Lapras_King they could, but, that'll be asking too much from them hahaha. I'd love to see what they were trying to show with David, I think it was clear they wanted to showcase the other clone of Big Boss, but, on the whole game, you only play as a doppelganger Big Boss, and that's the worst plot twist in history.

Lately I've been experiencing some issues with mine and it could be due to a memory leak or something I read about, any ideas how I could solve this issue?

@russell-marlow I'm sorry to hear that, that sounds awful.

I use mine pretty frequently but haven't had any issues that I've noticed. It's common enough that a game may not launch properly or it may even hard crash after playing multiple games for long periods of time, but a quick restart fixes most issues 99% of the time.

Can you tell me the symptoms? Are games not working or is it not booting up?

@Astral-Grain I have been trying to ask the Steam Community for help and so far I'm just waiting what they have to say. One thing I don't want to do is format my console and Micro SD because that means having to transfer screenshots and save data elsewhere because certain games don't have cloud saving and also keep track of the various things I downloaded.
