2B THE ALABAMA JOURNAL, THURSDAY, JANUARY 12,1989 Dare contends AU's Dye is lying about recruiting trying to sign the lineman from Enterprise. His father, Robert Dare, last summer said Dye promised to make sure that Charlie would be academically eligible to play as a freshman in 1988. Dare, who later signed with Alabama, did not play last season. His father said Auburn promised to get Charlie's high school grades changed so he would have the minimum 2.0 grade average in the required core curriculum and would arrange for him to take the American College Test in Lake Wales, where a relative of Auburn assistant coach Bud Casey was the test administrator. The results of a three-month investigation by Auburn were released Sunday, with the Birmingham News quoting Dye as saying, "There's just nothing there, which I knew there wasn't from the very beginning." Dye said the things Robert Dare "accused me of were ridiculous." "He's lying," Charlie Dare told the Huntsville Times.

"I cant comment any further. Something is there. I don't believe there's something I know." He said an NCAA official had told bis father that "I can't say much." "We don't want to get into a fight with Auburn through the media. What I can say is that it came out in the newspaper that Auburn proved I was lying. I'd just like to say it's Auburn's investigation and not the NCAA, and I will have my time coming when the NCAA investigation comes out" He said he expects that to be some time after this spring.

"The facts and proof are there," Dare said. "The NCAA just has to go through all the informnation. "I got mad when I read the paper because I wanted the truth found out and told. It will all come out There's definitely more to it than has come out Their report made it sound like I lied and didn't tell the truth. That's their prerogative to do that If that's what they found, fine.

I know and the NCAA will know the truth." TUSCALOOSA A freshman football player at Alabama said he is confident the NCAA will determine whether he or Auburn coach Pat Dye is telling the truth about Auburn's recruiting efforts. Charlie Dare said, however, he and his father have told the truth and that Dye did not when the coach said there was nothing to substantiate an accusation that Auburn went out of bounds in UMLaMshtt Tide Carnand St tklakasrs DoJosjara MA, ara'eektya CaL Oreaal It, DeaMara Ceispa 141, MeiiiMo, Tona 04 SOT FlefaaWj 77, FlerlapBl 0ejjfa(eaTli Ftsnaa A4M41.S. Pat Hamilton added 13 while Alec Kessler was held to 12 points. But Georgia's biggest disapoint-ment Wednesday was the season-ending injury suffered by 6-11 freshman center Elmore Spencer.

Spencer fractured his foot in the second half against the Tide, and Durham said X-rays taken today confirmed he would definitely be lost for the season. Alabama remains at home for its next two games, Saturday with Mis-, sissippi State and Wednesday against Kentucky. 71, CannaL kan a pier. "This was a good win for this team," he said. "They played hard and did all the things needed to win.

We've tried to get their intensity back up since the Vanderbilt game and tonight, at least, we did. "My problem with the Vanderbilt game is we didn't go out there and play hard at all. And you have to go out there and play hard every night in this league. We went a long way toward getting back to being that kind of team tonight" Ansley once again led the Tide with 21 points on 8-of-ll shooting. Lee added 18 and Cheatum tossed in 10.

A MM at UL Mutt, pjn. taWMitamiULCllppin.tJOpm uars. South Alabama coach Ronnie Arrow said it was a solid game for Le-; wis. "A lot of times, people look at Junie by just points and that's fine I like for our people to score points -j but I look at the total package," Arrow said. -s South Alabama scored the first nine points of the second half to take i an 11-point advantage at 57-46.

"In the second half, we just went straight man-to-man, and that's when we got our lead," Arrow said. But Alabama State held on and trailed by an 80-73 margin with 9:25 left to play when Clifford Griffin canned a 10-foot jumper. But South Alabama dominated in the late stages of the contest, outscor-ing the Hornets in the final four min- utes of play. Backup center Eric Thomas scored 13 for Alabama State, followed by Griffin with 13 and Ivy Dobson with 10. Gabriel Estaba scored 16 points for -South Alabama.

Brooks picked up his third foul at the 10:30 mark of the first half for Alabama State. He sat out the re- 2 mainder of the half. Oliver said the game might have been closer if Brooks could have played the whole game. "Terry Brooks had the three fouls. It was so questionable it was unbelievable," Oliver said.

Two Alabama State players Terry Brooks and Verdy Buckholtz fouled out of the game as the Jaguars were sent to the free-throw line 51 times, making 39 shots. Alabama State was 13-of-17 from the line. "I think the people come to see the players playing and not the striped zebras getting in the act," Oliver said about the officiating. "I thought we got hurt from the beginning.

All our best players were sitting over there with me." Brooks, Alabama State's guard who came into the game averaging 24 points per game, finished the game with 17 points, while playing just 20 minutes. South Alabama improved its record to 6-4. Alabama State fell to 5-7 in its last game before Saturday's Southwestern Athletic Conference opener in Houston, Texas, against Texas Southern. The loss also kept the Hornets win-less in seven games on the road this season. Alabama State stormed out to an early lead as Brooks scored seven unanswered points to give his team a 14-8 lead with 16 minutes left to play in the half.

But Lewis brought the Jaguars back, totalling 23 first-half points and scoring a bucket with four seconds left to give South Alabama a 48-46 halftime lead. Alabama State, which lost a 104-84 decision in Mobile against South Alabama Wednesday night, begins its SWAC schedule Saturday in Houston, Texas, against Texas Southern.

Oliver said the news that his team is ineligible for the NCAA Tournament came at a terrible time. "It's tough," Oliver said. "You're all geared up to play in the SWAC and jockey for position in the SWAC Tournament. Now you have to try to win the regular-season championship and let that be the highlight of your year." According to Alabama State interim athletic director Houston Mark-ham, who was in San Francisco for the NCAA convention, Alabama State was placed on restrictive membership status after the NCAA learned that last year's Alabama State men's and women's track teams did not meet NCAA Division I qualifications. "We did not have the proper number of participants in men's and women's track," Oliver said.

Alabama State women's track coach Barbara Williams confirmed that the women's track team did not have the NCAA Division I minimum number of 16 scholarship athletes last year. Alabama State men's track coach Horace Crump has been unavailable for comment. Oliver was saddened at the news.
