In loving remembrance on our dearly beloved days took his last ride in life in a police patroL He was removed to the hospital by police Thursday. "I'm the beer baron." he announced from his hospital bed, but In his last hours failed to recognize hi wife, Anna, and son, Joseph Jr. Wife to Tay Funeral Bill Mrs. Saltis. who after leaving her husband In 1933.

him for divorce three times, sought to arrange a church funeral for him. On her orders, Saltis body was removed to the chapel at 1938 W. 47th st. to wait arrangements for the services. She told Undertaker John W.

Ku-bin she would take care of the bill. Mrs. Saltis ar.d her son, Joseph 33, also denied that Saltis died broke. They said he had 5150 in his pockets when he was taken to the hospital. They said they tried to have him removed to a private hos-r-ital, but that a county hospital physician advised against moving the patient.

Saltis died practically broke because he outsmarted himself. When prohibition ended, he was still wealthy, bu the had put most of his property in his wife's name to fool the law. When they separated, she refused to give up their $50,000 home at 9859 Bell av, and other possessions, and she held on to the property even tho a divorce did not go thru. A minor mystery of Saltis death was his age. On his own court testi mony, he was 62. hospital records listed him as 55, and police said he was 52. He was born in Austria-Hungary, and was 11 -when his widowed mother brought him to Chicago. From a stock yard hand at 10 cents an hour and later a bolt factory employe, the 6 foot, 200 pound Saltis rose to affluence early in the 1920s when he ran beer from Wau-sau.

Wis, to Chicago. He bought one brewery outright and shares in two others. He bragged of earning $5,000 a week and gave $50 tips to cigaret girls. Mrs. Saltis said he bought pianos for his girl friends.
