On 14th May 2004, Jesús Gil's heart stopped beating. The 71-year-old - who had been the club's president from June 1987 to May 2003 – suffered a sudden and fatal brain haemorrhage.

Gil was a larger-than-life character that made his presence felt whenever he won or lost. For example, in '96 when Atleti won the League-Cup double, and each and every time he terminated the contracts of the 29 coaches who worked under him during his reign. Amongst them was Luis Aragonés, who is now sitting at his side waiting to see what happens in La Liga and the Champions League final.

We can only imagine how he would have clenched his fist with joy in the director's box at Hamburg in 2010, how he would have boasted having a Golden Boot winner (Forlán) on his payroll or on how big a pedestal he would have put that team that lifted the European Super Cup twice. And Simeone? Well, he would have been the apple of his eye.

When Atleti won the double in 1996, he was unable to put his feelings into words as he rode through the streets of Madrid on his inseparable horse 'Imperioso': "I don't know if I'm in Oceania or Sebastopol... I'm on cloud nine. This will go down in history. Atlético will live on forever," he said.
