What is Mac OS Anthology (1999 + 2000 + 2001)?

The Mac OS Anthology, intended for third-party developers to test their software against different versions of the Macintosh operating system, was first announced by Steve Jobs at the WWDC in May 1999. Due to its archival nature, the various Mac OS versions are stored on non-bootable DVD-ROM media.

There are 4 Anthology sets in existence, but effectively speaking there are only 2: The 1999 edition and the 2000 edition.  See, each of the 4 sets added two DVD's to the previous set, except in the year 2000 where Apple started the Anthology over, totally eliminating System 7 and picking up from Mac OS 8.5 onward.

1999 - The first Mac OS Anthology release includes DVD #1, #2, #3 and #4 and came with all Mac OS operating systems from Mac OS 7 to 8.5.1 in a boxset with 4 DVD-ROMs which included up to 25 localized versions of each operating system release. It was sold at a price of $199 or $149 to Apple Developer Connection (ADC) members who ordered before May 14, 1999. The price was later dropped to $99 in 2000.

1999 - The second Mac OS Anthology release includes DVD #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6 and those last 2 DVD-ROM's introduced Mac OS 8.6.  It was available at the end of 1999.

2000 - The third Mac OS Anthology release includes DVD #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 and #8 and was available in February 2000.  It added Mac OS 9 in 15 languages on the two additional DVD-ROM's. A second box set labeled Mac OS Anthology 2000 edition added the now 4 additional discs to the original boxset from the first release.

2001 - The fourth Mac OS Anthology and final release from 2001 grew to a total of 10 DVD-ROM discs, adding Mac OS 9.0.4 and 9.1 as well as the first release of Mac OS X on DVD #9 and #10.

As additional releases of the Mac OS are made available in this calendar year, they will be collated on additional DVD-ROM media and mailed to you as part of your Mac OS Anthology subscription.  All subscriptions to the Mac OS Anthology, 1999 Edition, will expire on December 31, 1999, regardless of purchase date or expiration date of ADC membership.

 

Mac OS Anthology Read Me (2000 edition)

As additional releases of the Mac OS are made available in this calendar year, they will be collated on additional DVD-ROM media and mailed to you as part of your Mac OS Anthology subscription.  All subscriptions to the Mac OS Anthology, 2000 Edition, will expire on December 31, 2000, regardless of purchase date or expiration date of ADC membership.  In the event a release set does not conclude production at the time of subscription expiration, you will receive the year-end materials as soon as available.
