What do Sam Kerr and a Merivale restaurant have in common?

Unfortunately, consistency is not a sexy concept. It’s nothing new or overly exciting to think about.

But consistency is a key (if not the key) ingredient for high performance.

Think about any elite athlete you admire. Sam Kerr. Patty Mills. Pick your favourite.

Now imagine that your favourite athlete was only performing well 20% of the time. Would they still be considered elite? Probably not. Would they still get paid the big bucks? Unlikely.

What Sam, Patty and all elite athletes are striving for is consistency. Delivering their best, at every possible minute. Not just for some of the games they play. Not just for when the conditions are perfect. And not just when they feel like it.

Now think about a business that you love. For me, it’s the likes of lululemon, a Merivale restaurant and Barry’s Bootcamp.   In my experience, these businesses deliver the best service consistently. Not just for some customers or in some of the locations. Not just when every staff member working is super experienced and knows everything. And not just when all staff have had a perfect day that day.

But how do Sam Kerr and the likes of Merivale deliver a high level of performance consistently? Sorry to tell you but it’s not overly sexy either…

  1. Clear systems and processes

  2. Training

  3. Practice

  4. Feedback

  5. Accountability

If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

Consistency is not sexy and it’s certainly not easy, but it is the difference between being high-performing and not being high-performing.

So if you want to be like Sam Kerr or perform like a Merivale restaurant, start with your systems and processes and what training you're doing and go from there.

Love this! And it’s true! For all the flack that merivale get (do they really, or is that just sydney talking??!), you can’t fault their service mentality and commitment to excellence - and then every now and then, you also see a star shine, bit it’s nice because it’s amidst excellence, not mediocrity!! And as for the sport, I struggle to comment but I’ll take your word. 😝

Great article Nic McClanachan, those 5 points are paramount, with training and the accountability two of my favourite listed 🙌
