Sharing My Secret to Being Adaptable and Resilient (So You Can Too!)
The 5 Ways of Adaptability from Bangkit Academy

Sharing My Secret to Being Adaptable and Resilient (So You Can Too!)

Did you know? Being adaptable and resilient takes more than just a will. But rest assured, there are key secrets to become more adaptable and resilient. Check below for details.

Having taken the adaptability and resilience class, I learned that theoretically there are five ways of adaptability that we can implement. From ways of interacting, achieving, learning, working, and thinking, all extensively cover the necessities in order to become adaptive and resilient, my experience with Bangkit Academy led by Google, Tokopedia, Gojek, & Traveloka is no exception. As a non-IT student myself, I’m aware of the massive demand increase for experts within the field of IT as a result of the current state of uncertainty (also known as VUCA era). Therefore it becomes my biggest interest to adapt through and attempt to become proficient in the IT sector, specifically Machine Learning. Through this article, I will convey to you how Bangkit 2023 has gone a step further than providing technical skills, but also how to become an adaptive and resilient student.

To begin, my experiences with the way of interacting were particularly challenging but also rewarding. Being the only person from my university in my class, I practically had to actively seek out opportunities to build relationships and connections with other cohorts. Moreover, as this is a fully online program with people originating from all across Indonesia, it fosters a generally diverse learning group. I find this particularly challenging to navigate through, but ultimately what I needed was to embrace the different styles and ways of interacting people have with each other.

While still being a full time student, it is undoubted that I needed to adjust my priorities and time-management strategy in the ways of achieving my goals. The process of learning plays a huge role in this as well, mainly because I’m left with no option but to go extra-miles to catch up with the foreign terms and principles of Machine Learning. This prompted me to adapt my approach to learning to make the most of resources provided, such as the practice labs and optional materials from the courses on Coursera.

Given that I’ve adapted to the new ways of learning and acquiring new skills through the program, I found that these experiences have also influenced me to be more flexible in my approach to solving problems and changing circumstances. For instance, I had to adjust my approach to finishing work such as assignments from both my university and the program, which sometimes can be overlapping. I realized that it’s important to set clear prioritization be it for individual or collaborative works. Another important case is to communicate out the work with other team members or simply peers.

Aside from above, I've also come to recognize the importance of seeing obstacles and setbacks as opportunities for growth and development. This has been particularly important in my experiences with the Bangkit 2023, where I had to balance my coursework at my university and from the program, including tight deadlines and difficult assignments. I tried to approach them as challenges to overcome, and have found that this mindset has helped me to stay motivated and focused even in the face of adversity.

To conclude, all of the five ways above are indeed the key to becoming adaptable and resilient. I have seen first-hand how reflecting them to my own experiences made me realize how grateful I am to be part of Bangkit 2023. Through these learnings, I also hope to be able to fully incorporate this into my upcoming journeys ahead, including for the Bangkit’s final capstone project.
