It was a pleasure today speaking with podcast pioneer Deb Coviello. As the founder of The Drop In CEO brand and podcast, Deb has empowered countless leaders through candid conversations and actionable advice. Her journey of turning an accidental phrase into an impactful message showed the power of passion and perseverance. Deb generously shared insights from building her enterprise through trial and error, as well as her vision for continued growth. I appreciate her taking the time to discuss topics ranging from leadership lessons to family values. 

Her example of giving back while pursuing purpose was truly inspiring. Now, let's dive deeper into our discussion through this Q&A...


Q: Deb, could you tell me more about how you started The Drop In CEO brand and podcast? 

A: Absolutely. As I mentioned earlier, it all began so unexpectedly during a short interview years ago when I was first asked to describe my offering. In that moment, the name "Drop In CEO" just came out of my mouth without any forethought. At first, I didn't think much of it and wasn't even sure I wanted to brand myself in that way. But after that guest host encouraged me to own it, something clicked. I started embracing the moniker and thinking deeply about what it represented - that persona of coming in, assessing needs objectively, and elevating people through challenging times. Once I fully realized the power of that message, I committed to shaping it into a force that could truly empower leaders. I've learned so much through the process, from building the brand to launching the podcast and evolving my approach. But looking back, it all stemmed from a simple accidental phrase that felt right in the moment.


Q: Deb, what have you learned through your journey so far with The Drop In CEO?

A: My journey thus far has been incredibly enlightening. Both the successes and perceived failures have provided invaluable lessons that have helped me grow personally and professionally. Early mistakes in corporate America shaped my perspective on truly unleashing potential in others. Building the brand and podcast through trial and error taught me the importance of passion, perseverance, and constantly evolving based on experiences. I've also learned so much from our conversations and the diverse leaders I've interviewed. Their stories continue to inspire me. But perhaps the biggest lesson is realizing how far an accidental phrase can go when you fully commit to its message and empowering others. I'm grateful for all those who have supported me along the way. My hope is that by sharing stories of empowerment, I can help even more people overcome challenges and shine brightly. There's still so much to learn, but I'm energized to keep growing and giving back.


Q: Deb, how do you go about finding such engaging and thought-provoking guests for your podcast?

A: Finding impactful guests is a process I've refined over many years, but it always begins with focusing on quality over quantity. I seek individuals who demonstrate strong leadership qualities like vision, empowering others, and making courageous decisions, regardless of title or industry. Often these leaders have overcome adversity that shaped their purpose. I study companies and leaders making a difference in their fields. When reaching out, I lead with curiosity about their stories and how we can learn from each other. The initial conversations are as much for me to get a sense of their mindset and willingness to have an open dialogue. While credentials are considered, passion and presence are most important. The conversations need to inspire. Once I feel aligned with a guest's message, I dive into learning all I can about them to have a rich discussion. While the process takes time, it's so rewarding when we're able to have those impactful exchanges that leave us all thinking in new ways.


Q: Deb, what would you say has been your favorite guest to have on The Drop In CEO podcast so far and why?

A: You know, Michael, I don't actually have a single favorite guest. Each conversation is so unique and I find value in all of them. But there was one interview in particular with Rabbi Yiannis Goldson that really stands out to me. He's someone who brings such a thoughtful, nuanced perspective to challenging ethical issues. During our discussion, he was able to bridge historical context and present-day realities in a way that got me thinking deeply. I loved how he didn't make things black and white but encouraged real dialogue. His ability to address complex topics while still finding common ground was really inspiring. So while I don't pick favorites, that interview experience of being fully present and learning so much has really stayed with me.


Q: Deb, what kind of impact have you seen from your consulting work and how does that motivate you to continue your mission?

A: Witnessing the positive impact and results of my work over the years has been tremendously motivating. I've had the privilege of dropping into companies and seeing dramatic changes within months - like helping one attain an important certification that enabled millions in new business. But perhaps even more gratifying are the personal impacts. I maintain relationships with individuals I've mentored who have since been promoted or started their own successful ventures. Just recently, one of those people shared they were finally ready to take on their dream role after gaining confidence through our work together. Small gestures like handwritten notes from listeners or leaders thanking me for the impact of a single podcast episode keep me energized. Realizing I have the ability to empower others and help them shine is so fulfilling. I'm committed to continuing providing platforms and resources that can spark positive change in meaningful ways. The opportunities to give back are what drive me to keep growing this mission.


Q: Deb, who or what inspires you in your work?

A: That's a thoughtful question. For me, inspiration comes from so many places. Of course, seeing the positive impacts and transformations in the lives of those I've had the honor of working with over the years fuels my passion. But I also draw great inspiration from my family - whether it's the resilience my loved ones have demonstrated through challenges or the good work my children are contributing to the world. Their support and my desire to set a good example are motivating. I'm also inspired by the diverse leaders and change-makers who graciously share their stories on my podcast. Hearing about their purpose, resilience, and the impacts they're making consistently gives me hope and motivation. Lastly, I find inspiration in the collaborative community we're building - people empowering one another and paying opportunities forward. Realizing I have a platform to elevate important conversations is inspiring. So in many ways, it's the ripple effects of our work that inspire me to keep growing this mission.


Q: Deb, as someone who has been in corporate leadership roles as well as entrepreneurship, what advice would you share with aspiring leaders looking to have more impact?

A: That's a very relevant question. For any leader seeking to make a difference, I believe the keys are clarity of purpose and empowering others. You must have a clear vision for the impact you want to make and mission that inspires you and others. Ask yourself how your work and leadership can uplift people. Then focus on cultivating environments where diverse talents feel respected, heard, and able to shine to their fullest potential. See people for who they are and what they're capable of achieving. Provide tools, resources and feedback to help them grow into their greatness. When we create spaces for people to feel valued and unleash creativity, amazing things can happen. It's also important to lead courageously and take chances to further important causes. Don't be afraid to think big and experiment. And finally, remember that true leadership is about service - how can you use your skills and platform to give back in meaningful ways? When we empower others, together we can accomplish so much.


Q: Deb, where do you hope to see The Drop In CEO brand and mission 3 years from now?

A: That's a great question as it's always important for any entrepreneur or business leader to have a sense of strategic direction and vision for growth. In 3 years, my hope is that The Drop In CEO will be making an even bigger impact and reaching more people globally. I'd love for the podcast to be in the top 10 of its category with hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners. I also envision expanding our multimedia presence with more video content and live streaming of events. On the consulting side, I hope to work with the executive teams of Fortune 500 companies and help even more organizations achieve transformational results. And I'm exploring the potential for a media company or platform that could exponentially increase our reach. Most of all, no matter where the brand is, I want to continue empowering diverse, purpose-driven leaders and sparking positive change in meaningful ways. The future is bright!


Q: Deb, you spoke earlier about empowering women in leadership roles. What progress have you seen?

A: I'm definitely seeing more progress when it comes to women in leadership, but there's always room for continued growth and support. In the past few years, I've had the honor of mentoring many talented women who've since been promoted or started their own companies. I also see more women guests on the podcast sharing their inspiring stories. In the next few years, I hope to directly impact even more women through dedicated programming, resources and networking opportunities. I'd like to launch initiatives that cultivate confidence and provide skills training. And I plan to actively champion women for high-level roles and recognition within companies and organizations. Overall, my hope is that in 2025, women will feel increasingly empowered to step fully into their leadership potential without limitations. There's so much untapped greatness in the world, and I want to do my part to unleash it for the benefit of all.


Q: Deb, I'd love if you could tell us a bit more about your family life and what's important to you outside of your work.

A: Absolutely, family is so important to me. I've been married to my husband Dan for over 35 years now. We have three adult children - two sons and a daughter. Spending quality time together as a family, whether it's sharing meals, attending sports games, or taking trips has always been a top priority. I also love that my kids have grown into caring, contributing members of society in their own right. Beyond my immediate family, extended relatives are quite close as well. Things like volunteering in our community together and supporting each other through both good and challenging times is so meaningful. While I pour a lot into my work, making sure to be fully present for my loved ones is what really fuels me at the end of the day. Family is truly my foundation.


Q: Deb, I believe you mentioned an upcoming family vacation. Could you tell us more about where you're headed and what you're looking forward to?

A: Absolutely! We're all really excited for our cruise to Alaska coming up in June. It will be the first time visiting that beautiful part of the country for all of us. I'm especially thrilled to experience the natural scenery like glaciers and wildlife in their natural habitat. I'm also looking forward to quality time with extended family - my niece arranged for us all to sail together which will make memories even more special. Most of all, I'm eager for the chance to truly unwind and recharge surrounded by loved ones. Between the activities, relaxation and scenic views, it will be the perfect getaway. I can't wait to disconnect from my devices and be fully present in each moment with family. It will be so restorative before the busy summer season.


Q: What overall message or call to action would you want to share with listeners?

A: To any listeners, my message would be to never underestimate your potential and the positive impact you have it in you to make. We all have gifts to offer this world and stories that could inspire others. So I encourage you to step fully into your purpose with courage. Pursue opportunities to empower people around you through confidence, vision and service. And remember - you have so much to give, even if you don't see it yet. I also invite you to stay connected through The Drop In CEO community as we continue elevating important conversations. Together, through supporting one another, we'll keep sparking positive change that uplifts leaders and organizations. Most of all, don't be afraid to dream big for how you can contribute to making this world a little bit better each day. You've got this - now go out there and shine brightly.


Q: Deb, I'm always impressed by your energy during interviews but they must take a lot out of you. What do you like to do to relax and recharge after one? 

A: You're absolutely right, the interviews are exhilarating but also draining! I find that right after wrapping up, I need 5-10 minutes of quiet time - whether it's deep breathing, light stretching or just being present. My mind and body need that transition. Then it really depends on my schedule. Often I'll catch up on tasks while the ideas are fresh. But ideally, I love spending quality time with my husband - whether it's a walk in nature, cooking a meal together or curling up to watch a show. Lately we've also been planning a family cruise vacation to Alaska this summer. It will be a great chance to fully relax and recharge surrounded by loved ones in a beautiful setting. Disconnecting and letting my mind decompress is so important to stay energized.


Q: Deb, I wanted to get your thoughts on an idea I had. Do you think it could work to have guest show hosts occasionally to help scale the podcast?

A: Michael, that's an excellent idea worth exploring further. Having trusted guest hosts could absolutely help expand our reach while I'm unavailable. It would allow the mission to keep growing consistently. Guests could bring new perspectives and audiences too. I think finding the right people who understand the brand and can deliver great experiences is key. With the right process in place, I'm confident it could work well. Why don't you pilot it - I'd be happy to discuss a trial run for you as a guest host. The exposure would also help get your voice out there. Q: Any final closing thoughts Deb?
