Folks…too many DEI initiatives suffer from a lack of Jewish representation. We make up less than 2% of the Canadian population but suffer a vastly disproportionate amount of hate crimes, which have risen 500% since October 7th! Adding Antisemitism training such as the one below from the FSWC to your Diversity & Inclusion initiatives is a concrete step you can take to help make your company more fair and inclusive for all. Leaders, HR professionals and…well…frankly everyone - please click or forward the below link and help your company stamp out hate in 2024. Just know that this type of training is equally important whether your company is centered in Abbotsford, Moosejaw or Whitehorse as if it’s headquartered in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal or NYC; not for nuthin, but making the world a little bit safer and more understanding for me and my kind would be the best kind of Channukah gift. On National Sorry Day 2023, the Judicial College of Victoria honours the strength and resilience of our First Nations peoples, the oldest living culture in the world. We remember the mistreatment of the Stolen Generations, and we are sorry for the pain inflicted on forcibly removed First Nations children. The Stolen Generations was part of a systematic attempt to erase Aboriginal language, wisdom, dance, song and spirituality. This has affected multiple generations and has led to a profound loss of identity. We recognise that this trauma persists today, and reconciliation aims to strengthen relationships between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and non-Indigenous peoples for the benefit of all Australians. During Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June), the Judicial College of Victoria enthusiastically welcomes the reconciliation process, which in Victoria encompasses the significant efforts of the Yoorrook Justice Commission and the forthcoming Makarrata Commission. Together, we can learn from our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, striving to contribute to reconciliation in Australia. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops took control of the state of Texas in 1865 to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation (signed into law two and a half years prior) and ensure that all enslaved people receive their freedom. According to the Global Slavery Index, an estimated 50 million people live in some form of modern slavery, including forced labor and human trafficking.  More than 12 million of these individuals are children. Although laws that historically endorsed institutionalized slavery have been abolished worldwide, slavery is still not legally criminalized in over 90 countries–including countries in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. Today we recognize Juneteenth as a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration.
