While half of the world is focussing on the global #pandemic, and the other half is still reeling from the American elections pantomime, a human, social, and political tragedy unfolds in #Mozambique. This week news reached us that at least 50 villagers in the northern Cabo Delgado province were beheaded by islamic state insurgents. This little known but serious and violent insurgency has already killed 2,000 people, and displaced 300,000 in the last 3 years, in one of the poorest places on Earth. The situation is getting even worse, more complex, and therefore more dangerous - Rebels have now also attacked targets in neighbouring #Tanzania. My analysis in last weekend’s #Expresso

Earlier this month went to Cyprus for a few days for some meetings. There I also tried to feel the pulse of a country that is very close to Gaza and the Middle-East - in fact it is EU's easternmost country. Russians, Ukranians, and more recently Israelis and Lebanese have been pouring in to escape different wars - and are changing the fabric of the island's society. Fears of a refugee inflow mix with the military and logistical importance of this mediterranean island. My latest @ Expresso

Surprising and historical night - after 14 successive election wins and 22 years in power, Erdogan and his AKP are defeated in today's municipal elections. When everybody had lost hope, the Turkish electorate rose to the occasion and slapped the ruling party. Momentous! My analysis in Expresso as always https://lnkd.in/dpK9Texg

Turkish local elections (tomorrow): Following the frustrating defeat last year in the presidential elections, the opposition to Erdogan is once again fragmented and divided, so the president´s AKP will win one more time across the nation. The opposition should keep the capital Ankara, and perhaps also Istanbul, Turkey´s largest metropolis, and where the major battle takes place. Results in Istambul can determine the political future of its charismatic opposition mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, whom many see as the best candidate to replace Erdogan in 5 years. A look into Azerbaijan, who held presidential elections recently. Ilham Aliyev consolidated his family ´s grip on the country, riding high on the recent victory in Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan is ever more ambitious and has become a strategic energy partner to the EU, but many point out human rights issues and the lack of a true democracy. My latest for Expresso

One year ago, two earthquakes (with a magnitude of 7.8 & 7.4) changed life forever in a vast area of southeastern Turkey (the size of Portugal), killing more than 53,000 people and wounding another 100,000. 365 days later, the scars are still very much visible – in the landscape and in the minds of survivors.
