DISCLAIMER: I have absolutely NO public comments to make about the political leanings or the recent congressional testimony of embattled Harvard President Claudine Gay. None whatsoever. However, as an adjunct college professor charged with policing the scholarly writing of graduate and undergrad students, I believe it sets a terrible precedent for Harvard to allow Gay to retroactively edit her past work to correct issues of plagiarism. I have only been an adjunct professor for about 2 years, and already I have had to give failing grades on well more than 100 student assignments for just the kind of plagiarism that Gay has been found to have engaged in. My students constantly complain about proper attribution and citation requirements. When the president of Harvard does the same thing and faces no consequences - what does that teach the next generation of students? If they want to retain her, that is their prerogative - but it certainly makes it harder for the rest of us as we fight to hold the line on academic integrity and scholarship. *This represents my own personal opinion, and does not necessarily reflect the views of my employers, institutions or other associated parties.

You are what you tolerate Harvard University's moto is “veritas” or truth Here are some highlights from its handbook  “Taking credit for anyone else’s work is stealing, and it is unacceptable in all academic situations, whether you do it intentionally or by accident.” “When you write papers in college, your work is held to the same standards of citation as the work of your professors.” How does Harvard’s current stance with Claudine Gay leave it with any credibility around truth or values. Any kid who has been suspended for plagiarism in the past by Harvard or who now commits in the in the future has a legal case or a precedent. This situation reflects a profound lack of courageous leadership, challenging Harvard's commitment to truth and integrity, and undermining the credibility of its academic standards.

I also elected to copy, VERBATIM, the following clip for those unwilling to click through: Shortly after the New York Post’s inquiry, the Harvard Corporation formed a subcommittee and an independent panel of three political scientists to assess the allegations of plagiarism in Gay’s published work, according to a Dec. 12 statement from the board. The findings “revealed a few instances of inadequate citation” but “no violation of Harvard’s standards for research misconduct,” and Gay was “proactively requesting” four corrections, the board said. These involved adding quotation marks and citations to her 2017 article in the Urban Affairs Review and to her 2001 article in the American Political Science review, the Crimson reported. MY OWN words again here: There is additional information in the article about other corrections Ms.Gay sought, despite the above quoted findings that while the work was imperfect, there was “'no violation of Harvard’s standards for research misconduct.'” (comma changed to a period. Just in case anyone notices...don't get your panties in a bunch). A range of responses from those whose work was specifically identified is also included -- and there's definitely one who is NOT pleased. Still, IMHO, y'all need to settle down and allow some grace. A better idea. Free speech is free within a civil [and may I say civilized] discourse. And the boundary lines are drawn to exclude bigotry and hate speeches voiced to promote and incite the annihilation of a[nother] race eg Jewish in antisemitism as clearly demonstrated by “Free Palestine” or “from the River to the Sea” which effectively means to get rid of the Jewish people which also simply is genocidal in its nature. Let’s call a spade a spade, without playing neither the fool nor hypocrite to stop this dangerous nonsense. We have seen it in Nazi Germany. We should learn from history. And learn well we must. In this day and age, antisemitic genocidal idea resurges and raises its ugly head in the form of tribal Arab-Islamic religiosity. In Nazi Germany it was Christian-antisemitism. Now it’s Arab-Islamic. In WWII it was pan-European antisemitism. Now it’s global-antisemitism. But one feature remains true. The population of the SilentGoodWorld is > than the LoudCrazyWorld. Then in WWII the silence of the GoodMajority made it possible for the Nazis to carry out their atrocities. Today we the GoodMajority must not again be silent. We ought to rise up and make our voices heard according to our GoodConscience.
