Recent activity around carbon offsets has left many of us wondering what's going on. The EU produced the Green Claims Directive to enforce verifiable claims on products and performance, including terms like "carbon neutral" used when offsetting. 👍 However, many companies face their biggest emissions challenges in their value chain, known as scope 3 emissions. SBTi's recent shift in position reports that carbon offsets play a role in addressing scope 3 emissions. However, this is quite a different position than what they've taken previously. 👎 On the other hand, the EU just agreed on carbon removal certificates, which could be seen as applaudable regulation in the offset market, helping to verify those carbon neutral claims. While some may rejoice, others point out that this could encourage more offsetting, shifting focus away from emissions reduction. Welcome to the final instalment of our deep dive into the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF). The EU’s upcoming CRCF framework aims to define high quality and authenticity of carbon removal efforts based on a set of standards called the QU.A.L.ITY criteria. This standardised certification will help scale innovative technologies as well as nature-based solutions, and cut down on greenwashing. The QU.A.L.ITY criteria reflects our own standards including those of monitoring, reporting and verification, third-party auditing, and avoiding negative socio-environmental impacts. Above all, the CRCF champions transparency and a well-functioning carbon market, advancing a net zero future for all. Yesterday, a group of 7 European countries proposed joint recommendations to improve the integrity of the voluntary carbon market and ensure full transparency, high-quality credits and credible claims. Gold Standard CEO, Margaret Kim, said: "This statement from seven EU Ministers highlights the opportunity and risk posed by the use of carbon credits to drive action and ambition. If companies use high-quality carbon credits as an addition to other decarbonisation actions rather than a substitute, and are clear and precise with their claims about that use, they can boost business and avoid accusations of greenwashing. Over the last 20 years projects that issue Gold Standard credits have helped many to live healthier, more productive lives - alongside delivering more than 266 million tonnes of emission reductions.
