EAR FACTS Did you know....... The inner ear is the circumference of a pencil eraser. The smallest bones are the ossicles in the middle ear: the incus, the malleus, and the stapes (also called the anvil, hammer, and stirrup). The number one cause of hearing loss is exposure to excessively loud sounds (85 decibels or higher). Your hearing can be damaged permanently even after a single exposure to extremely loud noise (shotgun blast, explosion, etc.).

Your cochlea is amazing. Mine is damaged since birth, so I “fake it” much of the time. Me: Water please. [points to plastic bottle sitting in window at room temperature] Staff right next to me: [unintelligible] Me: Yes, that one. [points again to window display] [Staff at window puts ice-cold bottle that has dripping condensation in front of me] Me: [after seeing the condensation, immediately able to “hear,” for the first time, the exact words spoken earlier, in the presumed correct tone: “Do you want it cold?”] Hearing loss is much more related to the brain and context than we can possibly imagine. It appears the brain can hear and memorize spoken words even if the ear’s machinery itself is severely damaged.
