Exciting news coming from the US as the Airlines Reporting Corporation (US BSP) reveals a surge in ticket sales this May. They’ve reported an impressive $9 billion worth of tickets sold, marking a 7% growth from last year. Other key highlights include: ✈ Passenger air trips hit 24.1m, up 6%, with domestic at 14.8m and international at 9.3m. 💰10% drop in airfares on several routes due to increased capacity, moving the average ticket price to $562, a clear decrease from May 2022’s $628. 📈Advantage US members note an 11% rise in Q2 trading over 2019. #AdvantageInsight #TravelData #TravelInsights #USA

The $25 billion US FFP bonanza. Why do airlines in America punch so far above their weight with ancillary revenue? Co-branded credit cards. US major airlines—Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Southwest, and United—achieve ancillary revenue results far above their 24% global traffic share. Though they represent just a quarter of passengers carried worldwide, they bring in 32% of global ancillary revenue. Elsewhere around the world, traditional airlines register $42 billion total ancillary revenue (but less than $11 billion from frequent flyer programs) while low cost carriers achieve ancillary revenue of $38.1 billion and barely $2 billion from FFPs. Consider this post a follow up to the article I posted about the decline in quality of service by airlines. In 2023, airlines made a net profit of about $3 dollars per pasaenger. I am die hard capitalist; therefore, I understand the need to raise prices. However; I know that airlines will raise fares and lower quality of service.
