Higher-ed math departments, take note! Federal funds for fellowships are available once again through the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN), which opened its application process on April 24. “The GAANN Program provides grants to academic departments and programs of institutions of higher education (IHEs) to support graduate fellowships for students with excellent academic records in their previous programs of study who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in their course of study at the institution,” according to the program website. At our Spring Eastern Sectional Meeting in early April, Zhisheng Shuai of the University of Central Florida presented his work on global stability in infectious disease models. Shuai spoke at a special session called “Mathematics of Infectious Disease: A Session in Memory of Dr. Abdul-Aziz Yakubu.” And he did so “at Howard University, which makes this really special,” Shuai said.
