Obsessed as I am with how brands and individuals communicate, it's been fascinating to observe how the King Charles statement from Buckingham Palace has landed.
What we communications professionals advise our clients in regards to narrative, is not merely about picking anodyne words to please mass audiences, but about recognising the likely interpretation and seeking to strike the right tone, at the right time.
Much of the coverage in subsequent hours has chosen to question why gaps have been left in the nuance and detail around King Charles' diagnosis.
Which cancer?
What treatment?
What prognosis?
I choose to believe that there has been great contemplation about how this news has been articulated, and why there is an absence of any more specificity.
What purpose over-sharing information if it may an unnecessary stretch in imagination and anticipation across the public?
Our job in communications is to relay the necessary and to do so in such a way as the received narrative serves the right audience in the here and now, while remaining live to what questions we are leaving unanswered - and when these might be more appropriately resolved.
It's certainly going to be a busy few weeks for the palace press office.
