Agrolab had a great day recently attending #Lantmästardagen at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), arranged by the students of Lantmästarprogrammet at SLU Alnarp 🌾 Lantmästarprogrammet is a Swedish agricultural Master's program providing students with comprehensive knowledge of today's and the future of agricultural enterprises 🎓 The day was filled with interesting conversations with students and colleagues within the green sector as well as inspiring talks on current issues. It was especially enjoyable to listen to the student's positive and curious attitude towards their future careers 👩🌾👨🌾 A big thank you to #Lantmästarprogrammet for having us! We are looking forward to more insightful conversations in the future 💡 #Agrolab #AgricultureEvents #FutureOfAgriculture

My master's degree thesis project was nominated for the University of Bremen Campus Prize, which is awarded to theses and dissertations that focus on sustainable development for the future. https://campuspreis.de/ My thesis compared soil samples from German corn fields on three different farms, each of which used different farming practices. I examined the amount of microbial activity in the soil as a proxy measure of soil health, as microbes are closely linked to all of the qualities which allow soil to support life. My results showed that soil microbial activity at the farm which used conventional farming practices was drastically lower, likely suppressed by chemical herbicides and fertilizers. The other two farms, which followed chemical-free organic practices, had significantly higher levels of microbial activity. This finding supports the idea that organic farming has numerous benefits, including greater preservation of soil health, productive capacity, and the local ecosystem. While my project did not ultimately win the prize, I extend my congratulations to Alex Intemann for his winning research on maximizing the efficiency of wind turbines. https://lnkd.in/eZ3TgTD7

🌱 An insightful discussion on NGTs and agriculture at KU Leuven Plant Institute This past Friday, the KU Leuven Plant Institute had the privilege of welcoming MEP Kathleen Van Brempt and Bruno Tobback. Our meeting focused on New Genome Techniques (NGTs) and their critical role in shaping a sustainable future for European agriculture. Our conversation explored the science and history of NGTs, highlighting their potential to enhance agricultural resilience and sustainability. With MEP Van Brempt and Mr. Tobback, we examined important policy considerations such as labeling and traceability, and the impact on organic farming. The dialogue bridged academic research and policy, highlighting the importance of evidence-based approaches to agricultural innovation. We extend our deepest thanks to MEP Kathleen Van Brempt, Bruno Tobback, and all attendees for a meaningful exchange of ideas. Your insights contribute significantly to our collective understanding and the ongoing dialogue between science and policy. This meeting underscores our shared commitment to advancing agricultural practices that are not only scientifically sound but also socially and environmentally responsible. #NGTs #PolicyDialogue #SustainableAgriculture

What's your experience been like working in science? 🧬🌾🥬🍅🌶️ "I love working in and with nature. My training is diverse and I am closely involved in the development of new vegetable varieties between the greenhouse, trial field and laboratory. It's really exciting to see how good varieties are made even better." - Anna-Lena Hargens, training to become an agricultural technical assistant at Rijk Zwaan Bundesverband Deutscher Pflanzenzüchter e.V. #WomenInScience #GrowingTheFuture
