How to Fix STOP 0x0000004F Errors

If restarting your PC doesn't fix the error, try updating your network card driver

Most 0x0000004F BSOD errors are caused by software problems or viral infections, but hardware or device driver issues are other possible causes as well.

The STOP 0x0000004F error will always appear on a STOP message, more commonly called a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Any of Microsoft's Windows NT based operating systems could experience the STOP 0x0000004F error. This includes Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT.

0x0000004F Errors

One of the errors below or a combination of both errors may display on the STOP message:

STOP: 0x0000004F
NDIS_INTERNAL_ERROR

The STOP 0x0000004F error may also be abbreviated as STOP 0x4F, but the full STOP code will always be what's displayed on the blue screen STOP message.

If Windows is able to start after the error, you may be prompted with a Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown message that shows:

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
BCCode: 4f

How to Fix STOP 0x0000004F Errors

Follow these steps in the order they're given below to try the simpler solutions first.

  1. Restart your computer if you haven't already done so. The STOP 0x0000004F blue screen error may not occur again after rebooting.

  2. Use Avast Clear to uninstall Avast Antivirus, assuming you have it installed. Some versions of Avast can, in very specific situations, cause a 0x0000004F BSOD.

    If you can't get Windows to stay working long enough to get Avast uninstalled, try starting in Safe Mode instead and uninstall from there. You can also try using a program uninstaller.

    If uninstalling Avast fixes the problem, download the latest version from their website and reinstall. Running a clean install of the latest available version is unlikely to make the 0x0000004F BSOD reappear.

  3. Update the drivers for your network card if updated drivers are available from your computer or hardware maker.

    The 0x4F BSOD indicates some kind of issue related to the network drivers (NDIS is an initialism for Network Driver Interface Specification), and the quickest way to fix a possible issue with network drivers is to simply replace (update) them.

    Since you're probably not given any more specific information on the BSOD about which drivers need replaced, don't forget to check your wireless network card, Bluetooth, and wired network devices for updates.

  4. Test your computer's memory. Some 0x4F errors are due to bad or failing RAM.

    You'll need to replace RAM that has failed tests. There's nothing repairable about your system memory.

  5. Perform basic STOP error troubleshooting. These extensive troubleshooting steps aren't specific to the STOP 0x0000004F error, but since most STOP errors are so similar, they should help resolve it.
