Get C64 Forever for revolutionary C64 emulation

C64 Review

Nobody had every went so far in creating a puzzle-based action game for the C64 as System 3 did with "The Last Ninja." Nobody had ever presented such a graphic and musical extravaganza as they did with the very same game.

Last Ninja 2, The - Screenshot 01

And, I imagine, very rarely had the expectations to a C64 game been as high as when this game, "Last Ninja 2", was released in 1988. To top off the first game would be a great achievement, yet that was what everybody expected. So how did Mark Cale, John Twiddy & Friends get out of this Catch-22?

Last Ninja 2, The - Screenshot 08

They sent the Last Ninja to New York. This messy, noisy, exiting and fastpaced city is about as far away from the mysterious and idyllic Lin Fen Island (scene of the first game) as you could possibly come. The game plot, however, is much the same. After their last clash on Lin Fen, the ninja's adversary, the evil shogun Kunitoki, is hiding out in modern day New York. There, he's busy setting up an evil scheme (of course it's an evil scheme; after all he's an evil shogun. He has a reputation to look after. But never mind.) to regain control of the Ninja powers that he lost at Lin Fen island. However, the ninjitsu spirits summon upon the The Last Ninja, and sends him through time and space, so that he may once again start a relentless pursuit of the shogun, this time through the streets and the underworld of New York City. During his mission he must pick up different objects and complete several puzzles before he can face his adversary and tear him to pieces. Also included are numerous combats with policemen, local thugs, and at the end the very finest of the shogun's henchmen.

Last Ninja 2, The - Screenshot 13

The game is in many ways very alike it's predecessor. And yet it's very different. I opened both of them (thank Father Bill for multitasking) in separate windows and checked out some things on the first level on both. What struck me was the by far richer environments found in this game. Less space was left open and green. Also, I must say that I like the music (by Matt Gray) very much. On the down side, I must note that it seems that he runs a little bit out of ideas at the end of the game, something that goes a little bit for the whole game. The last three levels are more combat-focused than the first three, and put less emphasis on puzzles. But I have to underline that this is just a detail. The Last Ninja 2 is a very, very, good game, and I recomend it highly. A must for every true C64 fan to have in his or hers collection.

Last Ninja 2, The - Screenshot 16

SUMMARY
If you forget all about the Last Ninja series for a while, and just concentrate on this game, you'll see that this game is graphically, musically and gameplaywise superior to most other C64 productions. It has several good puzzles, lifelike animation, very rich and detailed environments, and is all in all very well produced. As mentioned: an absolute must.

HOT TIP: Visit The Last Ninja Archives for more info.

Summary

GRAPHICS: 10 / 10

No other option than to go for broke here. As already noticed, the environments are much richer than in the first game. Secondly, the animation and the movements are also remarkably improved (check it out - start both games at once). It's all extremely impressive as C64 graphics goes, and I reward it for that.

SOUND: 9 / 10

Great original music by Matt Gray. For those interested in such details, notice how very well he exploits all the three voices of the SID chip. For those not interested in such, sit back and enjoy. Some of the themes to the last levels are a bit too similar to the themes of some of the early levels, but this isn't too grave a fault. All in all some of the best I have heard for the C64.

PLAYABILITY: 10 / 10

Indeed. The puzzles are intricate as always, and even though the limited number of objects to pick up make them somewhat easier, you should have to work a little bit on some of them (if you don't have a walkthrough or some other helpful advice on the way). The combat is somewhat tougher than in the first game, especially in the last levels where the shogun's henchmen all go chainsaw massacre (not literally, you'll see for yourself when you get there) and also get very hard to beat up. You might get a little tired if you play through it all, but that's more down to sheer length than to quality.

OVERALL: 10 / 10

An visually and musically great experience combined with a very well thought-out storyboard is usually a good way of scoring a lot of points with me. "Last Ninja 2 - Back With A Vengeance" has all this and a little bit more, and therefore, it gets what it deserves - a very high score.

Good graphics and great music. Unfortunately the game is quite overrated and a pain to play. As mentioned before, the controls are bloody awful no matter what mode you select and you find yourself sliding all around the screen going backwards and not facing the way you want most of the time.

The Last Ninja 2.

+ beautiful and detailed graphics, great animations - one of the best visuals on the C64 ever
+ top notch soundtrack which is also amongst the highest rated in the Commie's huge musical library
+ Oriental spirit and modern American scenery work surprisingly well together

- frustrating platform sections - again
- later levels feel small, rushed and lacking the initial creativity
- too short in general

9/10

I remember how back in the day the controls of The Last Ninja were criticized. Last Ninja 2 corresponded this: by hitting key J it's possible to switch between three different control modes. Interestingly some cracked versions of this game didn't include this function, and of course you had to have Avenger's Handbook to even know this.

Basically the first one with slightly better graphics and less rubbish jumping sections. I didn't like it when it came out and time has not made me change my mind. A technical showcase for the 64 but the actual game is just not fun to play.

People seem to criticise the control methods on the Last Ninja games, but quite frankly there's nothing wrong in that respect. This sequel improves on the first on all fronts. It is probably the best game that ever graced the C64 in the 80s. John Twiddy probably got overlooked more than anyone, but to cram in all the graphics and music on each level took some effort. Real-time decompressing of sprites and the innovative layering of each screen as it is drawn to create the 3d isometric world for the Ninja to explore shouldn't be so readily overlooked. It was one of the best programmed games technically on a C64 and still stands today as being a fine example of how to write a game of this type. The 80s day setting for this sequel doesn't feel out of place from the original and there's lots of mirroring of the original between level themes, Palace Gardens vs Central Park, Dungeons vs Sewers. Hugh Binns and Matt Gray did justice to the graphics and sound respectively. It's very atmospheric and immersive and compels you to explore and complete the game. A more than worthy sequel to the original and it outshines the final game in the trilogy by some margin. People who berate this game should probably re-evaluate their scores and opinions of it. It's a lot better game than they realise, if they just care to look beneath the surface - or bother to read the manual in order to how to control the Ninja.

I have to concur that this is vastly overrated.
Games where enemies respawn in the same place preventing you from moving easily through already explored screens is one of the most heinous design mistakes you can make. Boring fighting on top of this makes it too much of a pain to play. Shame because the rest is quite impressive. Compare this with Infiltrator (once at the base) where different options allow you to avoid the tedium of constant fighting.

The graphics and music are GREAT but the lousy gameplay makes the game too challenging. The fighting is done poorly, it's best to just avoid them and run away. Overrated.

Graphics and animations were fantastic, controls were better than the first one, even if it took some practice and some jumps were still hard, though not as pixel-perfect and nearly impossible as the previous one. Love the modern setting and the fun in-game touches, like guys throwing pots down the windows. Some clever puzzles (i.e. The molotov bomb). Not easy but a rewarding experience, though they could have programmed an actual ending sequence! Still, an absolute must-have and certainly the most playable of the trilogy (besides LN Remix, which is essentially the same game).

I do not understand why there are so many people who say this has great game play. The graphics are great and the music is awe-inspiring. But the controls? They were terrible back and then and they are terrible now. The controls destroy any kind of game-play. There a are a lot of isometric type games I love and have no difficulty controlling. They could have done a much better job with the controls. If that had been the case then this indeed would have been a truly great game.

I'd say this is the greatest 8-bit title of all time, and the most influential. Cut scenes, loading music and awesome soundtrack, seemless 3D open world levels, nerve-wracking tense moments, gripping atmosphere, AI, 3D combat etc etc, and all the goodies in the box like the star and mask. The cover art was industry defining, and this look of revenge is even in the pixels of the guy in the game. It rewards mastery, especially of the controls. Ignoring ports from PC and arcade games, the highest rated game here is Turrican 2. This game has more detail and atmosphere and greater grown-up puzzles than Turrican 2, so for me it is 10/10.

Thank you Butane Bob, I finally know I'm not the only one! Don't get me wrong, the graphics are superb (some of the best on C64 without question) and the soundtrack is awesome. But the game is bloody painful to play. The controls suck, combat is terrible and the sections where you have to jump over the river had me coming closer to breaking a joystick than anything else I played. I genuinely think the Last Ninja games are the most overrated entries in the entire C64 library if we're judging them by how well they play. And for what it's worth, this is also how I felt back in the day when C64 was current.

If there were a single game series in dire need of some kind of remake it's the Last Ninja Trilogy.

What was ambitious as hell and impressive at the time is now just an absolute mess. The controls are atrocious, just picking up items in the game is a baffling ordeal because you have to be positioned absolutely pixel perfect, followed by inputting a controller combination that is relative to the direction you're facing. If you do it incorrectly, your ninja will move, messing up your positioning and forcing you to try it again.

Combat is a crapshoot, the collision detection is so inconsistent that 90% of the time your weapon just goes straight through the enemy, yet they can hit you perfectly every single time. Also the enemies are near-invincible, once they're knocked down their health refills and they just get back up. Making backtracking a gigantic pain in the balls.
Objectives are obtuse and half the time you will need a guide to work out what on earth you're supposed to be doing. Don't even get me started with the platforming segments, good god.

Some great music though of course, and the idea for a brilliant game is in there, but it just falls apart when you try to actually play it. This goes for the entire trilogy. I can't help but imagine what this would have been like in the hands of a skilled Japanese studio, they could have easily fixed this game's myriad issues.

Still worth a playthrough for history's sake to see what they were going for.

I like the first Last Ninja (except the self curing NPCs).
I really fond the music of this game (LN2) but I found really strange that a medieval times (feudal Japan era) assassin strolling in 1980's New York...

To this day I regard this game one of the best games of all time on any system. The music is unbelievable and faultless, the graphics are as good as you are going to see on a C64 and the game play challenging, fun and varied. The levels differ with ninja visiting the new york mean streets, the sewers, offices, mansions, central park (not in that order).

I probably would have voted it a perfect 10 if it wasn't just for a couple of things which needed improving. You have a absolutely perfect game if you have these improvements.

Stage one if you forget something once you cross the water it asks you if you are ready for the next stage (ie do you need to go back to collect something) - unfortunately you cant go back to collect what you may have missed as you always fall into the water if you try go back,

The office stage trying to figure out how to open the secret door is definitely not obvious enough and next to impossible to work out and same could be said for escaping the rooftop to get to the mansion.

Other than those 3 criticisms the game is perfect, a true masterpiece of a game which in my eyes will always be the one game that pushed the Commodore 64 to its very limits.

LN2 is the most playable in the series. I still have to say that, no matter how much I liked it as a kid and still do, objectively I can't call it a good game. The fighting is pretty boring, and the perspective leads to a whole lot of trouble positioning the ninja to actually hit an enemy and make difficult jumps. And some of the puzzles are not very well implemented. I also feel like something was lost by putting the ninja into an urban setting. Even though the music is great and the graphics still very good, I just miss the mood the original created.

The Last Ninja games had brilliant graphics, music and game play and I've always been interested to have the poster of the Last Ninja 1 and last Ninja 2 art cover. I tried searching online for buying an A3 poster or download a high resolution image which I could print, but this is not possible. I have also purchased both games from Ebay so I could scan the cover box and up size it, but this is not a good idea because it will get blurry and lose details. So now I am wondering if someone knows from where I can buy these posters, or maybe someone help me with a link from where I can download both art covers or adverts from a retro magazine in high resolutions?

Loses the awesome Japanese atmosphere of the original, and I don't think the music is quite as good. Graphics still top notch though.

Gameplay suffers from all the problems of the first game. Next to impossible jumping sections and lack luster combat.

Great tech demo, but the playability was never there. It does win points for having an awesome tape loader though.

Fantastic at the time, but by god, it hasn't aged well.

Technically it's all there, but the gameplay is the kind of clunky mess of awkward controls, item fetching and frustrating combat that we just wouldn't put up with these days.

Looks gorgeous though, and the soundtrack is possibly the best on the system. Overall a bit of a mixed bag and a bittersweet retro trip, but without doubt a true landmark title.

Some surprisng comments on Last Ninja II here.

The graphics and music were vastly superior to the original, for the most part. There was much greater variety in level design too.

People seem to have forgotten that the jump controls were greatly simplified for the sequel. In Last Ninja, there were three types of flips you could execute, which made traversing the cliched stepping stones a chore.

10/10

(Last Ninja 3 was a heap of crap, incidently)

I couldn't get into this or Remix. They're just not as good as the original. It's largely the same, and that's the problem. The New York setting doesn't appeal to me, either. The Last Ninja had a much more atmospheric and subtle soundtrack, too. I suppose the worst thing is for me, it highlights the problems with the series - the tedious fight sequences, although identical to the predecessor, seem drearier here. Play it to say you've played it and in case you like it, but it's just not as good, if you ask me.

I cannot agree with you. Actually, I prefer Matt Gray's music to the one from Ben Daglish. It's better in terms of sound and composition. The levels don't vary too much, huh? What about the first part, where you had park alleys and even more park alleys? In LN2 you have those alleys in level 1 , streets in level 2, sewers in level 3 and so on... The predecessor had one thing LN2 have not - the basement level, which is probably the best in the whole trilogy.

The weak link in the most magnificent game series known to man. All that was magical in Ninja 1 was noticably weaker. Grays music is repetitive and uninspired, boring. The story is horrific - Armakuni time travells, and he does so to modern day New York. Sigh. Naturally ruins all the atmosphere of ninjaism. The levels don't vary much, there's a lot of streets and, well, more streets. Surely a rushed piece of software. Luckily things were corrected for Ninja 3, and honor was restored.

The jumping on the 4 platforms in the basement section is the only downfall in this game. There is a big learning curve to that and many wasted ninjas. Otherwise its very upbeat with a time clock to consider in this one. Overall I'm giving it a 8/10. Haywire

What kind of idiot you have to be to rate this title 1/10? Let's take a look at Arowana's votes. 10 for Pirates! And IK+, 1 for Maniac Mansion, Zak Mckracken and Last Ninja 2. Geez, personally I consider IK+ as one of the most overrated titles on this very site, but it's still a good game, I gave it a 7, because it's quite nice and the backdrop looks great even in the XXIst century. Should I give it 1 out of 10 only because I disagree with the top 5 games? If you're frustrated with the rankings don't frustrate other people by voting in such a stupid way. Haven't you noticed that LN2 includes some of the best music and graphics ever done on C64?

I was thinking... The C64 really is the best game platform ever... Better than the NES, Mega Drive (Genesis) and Playstation...

Most boring fact of the millenium: While the C64 version of this game is easily the best, the second best version is on...
The Acorn Electron!!!
All the other versions are relatively disappointing!

Oh my goodness!!!
For sure one of the best games for my C64, can you imagine buying a computer, just for one game???
Well, I did buy a C64 long before this game came out, but I would have bought one to play this!
Memories... Memories

Best Action Adventure ever. Sad that Last Ninja 4 was cancelled for the C64. The serie have deserved an better finale but Part 3.

Never understood why system 3 use a new engine for LN3 and Vendetta if they have the best Isoengine from LN2.

One of my favourite games on any format. Although I have a soft spot for the original (i spent so long trying to finish that game) this had a few tweaks which made it (technically) better.

I preferred the original, but only just! This had improved GFX although the music never hit me the way the prequel's did. Still, a stonking game.

This game holds so many memories. Lol I remember going out and buying a plastic katana after playing this game (how many others did). The game just eeked atmosphere you could almost smell the hotdogs. Top game that will remain a classic forever

I was nervously awaiting this one.
Last Ninja 1 was like a total addiction to me and I was affraid the sequel wouldn't be able to match it.
How happy I was that it was even more inventive and especially Modern!
Goosebumbs when I loaded the original tape after not using my C64 for some 10 years.

This game is way overrated compared to the first game in the series. There isn't a great deal of atmosphere in having a ninja running around in New York, and while Matt Grays music is excellent, it just doesn't have "ninja" game written all over it like Ben Daglish's tunes had. That said, the game is beautiful and the puzzles are quite good, too.

I owned this back when it 1st came out. Even now when I load and play this game its still one of the best C64 beats em ups around! The music rocks and even though the remix version looks slightly better I still love this game as much now as I did back all those years ago. This was the 1st game I downloaded when I discovered emulation like 7 years ago.. Does anyone else remember C64S emulator? Haha...

After playing and completing the fantastic original The Last Ninja, I never really got into the Last Ninja 2. The graphics are as good as in the originals which both have a distinct style lacking in the 3 instalment. I really liked the whole idea with the New York theme. For me though, the music in the original last ninja game still rates as the best.

Absolutely brill! I can remember playing this game vividly. It was the first game that I completed for my C64 and it robbed me of many games o' fitbaw doon the park! Graphics were superb for the time, gameplay was complex but rewarding. Ahh, the good old days eh?
Mark Newbery 2004-07-25
I remember buying this game with my buddy Steve Morrison and our anxious bus-ride home, game in hand. We just knew that this title was going to revolutionize computer gaming - and it did. A fantastic achievement that has stood the test of time marvelously The graphics and music are second-to-none and the gameplay is superb. The best in the series 9/10.

This game robbed me of countless hours and was mostly to blame for my social ineptness as a teenager, but it was the best reason for owning a C64. Matt Grays tunes made me learn the Guitar and buy a phat as analogue keyboard. Not only influencial, but inspirational too. The only game thats ever come close sonically in the 90s and 00's was Unreal on the PC.
Kolzig 2004-02-08
The best game on C64, it was difficult and challenging, the music was unbelievably good, and the overall feel of the game is just perfect.
Ali Pouladi 2004-01-10
The LN games are not that difficult to beat once you get the hang of them. I stll play & finish them frequently, without a trainer. Even jumps are straight forward now :)
Ahmad 2003-12-24
I find it really hard about playing this game, but a long time ago, my brother played it and he finished it which I was watching him play. And all of the music on this game is fantastic, I loved it.
SRRAE 2003-12-13
Where are games like this now? There are loads of people who never finished or even got past level 2 or 3 but they kept at it. Games now a days it has nothing to do how good you are at a game to finish it but how long you play it for. EVERY single Mega Drive, PC and Xbox game I have I have finished. I have only finished about 10% of my C64 games which makes me want to play it more and more.
The best game EVER!!!
BigFairy321 2003-11-30
Brilliant, absolutley brilliant, I rushed out to buy this game when it fist came out and I was not disapointed. Excellent graphics, awesome music. I just spent 43mins completeing it for the first time in about 12 years, oddily enough I somehow knew EXACTLY what to do still, and it blew me away. The C64 version of LN2 is the best of em all. The PC version was complete crap and unplayable. Funny enough, im yet to plat Last Ninja 3, as by the time it came out I had my eye on an Amiga ( But I ended buying a 386Dx instead, which was probaly the best thing that I done at the time). Anyways, 10/10 for this game. A must play, even if u have completed it a hundred time already.
Vip 2003-11-28
Polished. Beautiful. Immersive. Awesome. Challenging. Other words fail me - this game truly brings out the Ninja in all of us. Thumbs are UPPPP!

Never really played this game, shame on me :( nothing is perfect, but tune of this game is pretty close.
HalcyonDaze 2003-11-05
One of the greatest games ever made on any machine. A true masterpiece!

Like Kenshiro, it also took me ages to figure out I had to push the boat.

The music, grpahics, gameplay, everything about this game was pure class, Ive still got the rubber ninja star!

Last Ninja 1&2 CLASSICS
Shunichiro 2003-10-19
What can be said about Last Ninja 2 that hasn't been said before? Not much so I resort to saying the same things as everyone else. While the concept "ninja in NY" might be a bit far-fetched, the execution more than makes it up. Nice attention to detail in graphics made the enviroments interesting. Matt Gray's incredible soundtrack is the best music on C64. Period. I played this through many, many times, sometimes just to hear the music. A bit awkward controls perhaps but you got used to them. One of the best games on C64.
saimo 2003-09-16
Everything in this game get a 11 out of 10: words can't say much... You have to play it from beginning to end to know what a wonderful experience it is.
One of the greatest games of all time on any platform!!!
ciabbi 2003-07-28
But the music ?!? The music ?!?
did you ever heard anything better then the last ninja 2 soundtrack?
the levels 2 and 6 presentation's music are the best ever done!!!

This was one of the best game on C64. I have still got it and played it for the first time in ages the other week. Got too the last misson and the tape got tangled in the player.
andy 2003-06-04
Yeh this is the best game that I ever played on the C64. Cant get enough of it. I have never played after the sewers though. But with an emulators help it should be all good.
Ali 2003-04-17
Niklas, you have to punch the yellow switch to open the trap door in the pervious screen. Check lastninja.c64.org for the complete walkthrough. This is the best game ever!

Last ninja? I don't think. Sorry for today's kids.

I don't know why, but I cant come any further then the first opponent. I kill him but then I cant come anywhere :-S. Is there something wrong with my copy of the game?

8-bit machine... Yeah, maybe.
A jewel.

lastninja 2 was bull with all that time travel rubbish..

If THE LAST NINJA was one of the best games for the 64... THE LAST NINJA II Is the best game !!! No comments needed !!! TRY IT !!!
Itekei 2003-01-05
Last Ninja II is one of the best C64 games ever made IMHO. It takes good nerves and a good trainier but it's gorgeous. I listen to the SID all day long and dream of the past when computergames meant entertainment . )

I like the bit with Superman flying around in the background behind the sky scrapers
Stuart 2002-10-22
A game years ahead of its time. With beautiful sound and graphics which I still don't know how my little C64 poduced them make this one of, if not the best game I have EVER played. If it could be hung in a gallery it should.
Roland 2002-10-14
One of my most liked games. And many good tunes.
Marko 2002-10-06
A worthy follower to the first part. Better music and graphic, the surrounding (New York in the present) New hard riddles and a good gameplay. Even today I am still listening to the superb sound from this game.
Big E 2002-09-27
Best game ever in every computer.. You just got that feeling of beeing ninja.. And thats the point. The music is best of ever in computer games... I can tell you because Im allmost Elvis, , okei but thats the point you get the feeling ang Great Central Park.. Graphic is exellent.. Adios

Marauder2000 2002-08-22
Gee, I bet fnote is the one who keeps dishonestly making high "10" votes on the Ninja game series.

So much for one vote per person...
james 2002-08-22
Fnote is right - this is a really really top game. Particularly when you look at the C64's limits. Compared to the memory available, there is no other game on any other platform that is as good as this, or ln1 for that matter. Its an absolute classic. You even got a nija mask and plastic throwing star with the box!! Im gonna have to get out the old machine to play this again. Marauder 2000 - you are a muppet!!
Killerbee 2002-08-21
Hey fnote, don't you think everyone should decide for her/himself wether she/he likes a game or not ??? To hit the point: Maybe you like LN2, but others don't! Just accept this... Or be a master of ignorance and therefore a real lamer... Go home...
fnote 2002-08-21
Shut up Mar2000!!!

last ninja IS a good game, even though some did abuse the earlier voting system.

just play it for more than two minutes, and you'll see.
Marauder 2000 2002-08-20
Just like before some morons keep abusing the voting system with this and the other Last Nija Crap games. Geez, so much dishonesty...
Paul 2002-08-17
The best game of its' genre. Magical.
dumbflag 2002-08-16
Great graphics and sound. But, as with other games in the series, gameplay isn't much to shout about. Not bad, not great either.
Ali Pouladi 2002-08-09
Marauder 2000, have you ever actually 'coded' anything on C64? Whenever you hear the term 'the perfect computer program', think of Last Ninja series. Just look at the graphics, music, gameplay, diversity, ... Its C64 we are talking about with only 16 colours and only 64k of memory for god sake!
Baddy X 2002-08-04
Best Graphics. Best music Best gameplay. Best controls. Best atmosphere. Best Everthing. Best game. EVER!
fnote 2002-07-30
A great game, if not quite as charming as the first one, in my opinion. Graphics are better here, but the atmospehere isn't quite as intriguing as it was in LN1.

Somehow the mystical ancient Japan seemed a better place for a Ninja than modern New York.

LN2 has more puzzles than it's precessor, points for that! The music is excellent in it's own way, almost as good as Benn's work.

If you could place LN2 in the setting of LN1, you'd have the best game ever!
Matteo 2002-07-11
The greatest ARCADE/ADVENTURE ever... Try to find similar on today's PC... There's no way to find one! Just keep on play LN2.
Geir 2002-07-08
Great game, think I've got to take out the Commodore and play it:)
Vegeta 2002-06-28
The best game from the Last Ninja series. Great music, great graphics and ditto gameplay.
A must have for C64 fans. Even after a couple of years it's still worth playing.
Marauder 2000 2002-06-19
Nonono! Not another Last Ninja Crap game on the top ten!
Inferno 2002-06-01
My fave game ever, that's it. Somebody says Armakuni looked out of place in the urban setting, but I don't really think so - the environment was so vivid that it soon became "natural", and the modern-days locations offered loads of chances for interesting puzzles and non-stop action. Just look at the scene where Armakuni approaches a rooftop from an helicopter - not even the best action movie will ever be this cool! System 3, I miss you...
Hazard 2002-05-19
My favourite C64 game of all time, and definitely the one I've spent most time with. It's so much fun that I still go through the game from time to time. Timeless, which is more than can be said for the over-rated Last Ninja 3 (In My Opinion).
Marko A. 2002-05-04
Nice sequel for one of the best C-64 games ever, but somehow the game just didn't feel the same as the first one. Perhaps it was the New York setting or something... It was still an enjoyable game and the graphics were even better than in the first one (if possible) and Matt Gray's musics are excellent as always. Recommended.
milkylicker 2002-03-28
This game by far proves what the C64 is capable of. The graphics are great. The gameplay - outstanding and the music - it's what makes the game. I don't think the 1st, 3rd or remix comes close to this iteration of LN. Probably my number one game of all time.

LATER BRO!
-RAJ S. & RODZ
Jensei 2002-03-17
Oh yes! The good old Last ninja II. The game I used to play all day/night long and I'm still playing.
Boçù 2002-02-08
I am a great fan of the original Last Ninja, and I always thought that what made the game superb was the astonishing feeling created by the graphics, sound, plot and setting. That’s why I hated LN 2: Armakuni seemed to me totally out of place in modern New York. LN 3 is far better, with its Tibet setting but, despite the graphical better detail, it lacks the variety of the original, which stands still as the best of the bunch and one of the top C64 games ever.
Oldskool 2002-02-01
One of the greats. Nothing more to add except to allude to the cheeky constuction of a pair of nunchaku :)
Paradroid 2002-01-29
This game probably features the coolest SID-music ever composed. Matt Gray was/is a genius. The actual game is no way near as good as the first game, though. I mean, a ninja in modern New York City... Get real!
Theo Houtman 2002-01-23
This game stole my personal life! It made me a shudin. But at the time it was worth it ;) As how Azoxystrobin said it. This is the ultimate C64 game! I must have finished the game about 30 times.

This had to be the greatest C64 game ever made! Who could ever forget Superman?

MayhemUK 2002-01-02
Best set of music in a C64 game. Matt Gray, where are you?!
Kenshiro 2002-01-01
Ahh... This is another of my faves, I remember being stuck on Central Park for months not knowing about the little island with the boat you had to push. Then spending many more months trying to kill the damn alligator.

A great game of the C64 age, matched only by the original.
