No other option than to go for broke here. As already noticed, the environments are much richer than in the first game. Secondly, the animation and the movements are also remarkably improved (check it out - start both games at once). It's all extremely impressive as C64 graphics goes, and I reward it for that.
Great original music by Matt Gray. For those interested in such details, notice how very well he exploits all the three voices of the SID chip. For those not interested in such, sit back and enjoy. Some of the themes to the last levels are a bit too similar to the themes of some of the early levels, but this isn't too grave a fault. All in all some of the best I have heard for the C64.
Indeed. The puzzles are intricate as always, and even though the limited number of objects to pick up make them somewhat easier, you should have to work a little bit on some of them (if you don't have a walkthrough or some other helpful advice on the way). The combat is somewhat tougher than in the first game, especially in the last levels where the shogun's henchmen all go chainsaw massacre (not literally, you'll see for yourself when you get there) and also get very hard to beat up. You might get a little tired if you play through it all, but that's more down to sheer length than to quality.
An visually and musically great experience combined with a very well thought-out storyboard is usually a good way of scoring a lot of points with me. "Last Ninja 2 - Back With A Vengeance" has all this and a little bit more, and therefore, it gets what it deserves - a very high score.
+ beautiful and detailed graphics, great animations - one of the best visuals on the C64 ever
+ top notch soundtrack which is also amongst the highest rated in the Commie's huge musical library
+ Oriental spirit and modern American scenery work surprisingly well together
- frustrating platform sections - again
- later levels feel small, rushed and lacking the initial creativity
- too short in general
9/10
Games where enemies respawn in the same place preventing you from moving easily through already explored screens is one of the most heinous design mistakes you can make. Boring fighting on top of this makes it too much of a pain to play. Shame because the rest is quite impressive. Compare this with Infiltrator (once at the base) where different options allow you to avoid the tedium of constant fighting.
What was ambitious as hell and impressive at the time is now just an absolute mess. The controls are atrocious, just picking up items in the game is a baffling ordeal because you have to be positioned absolutely pixel perfect, followed by inputting a controller combination that is relative to the direction you're facing. If you do it incorrectly, your ninja will move, messing up your positioning and forcing you to try it again.
Combat is a crapshoot, the collision detection is so inconsistent that 90% of the time your weapon just goes straight through the enemy, yet they can hit you perfectly every single time. Also the enemies are near-invincible, once they're knocked down their health refills and they just get back up. Making backtracking a gigantic pain in the balls.
Objectives are obtuse and half the time you will need a guide to work out what on earth you're supposed to be doing. Don't even get me started with the platforming segments, good god.
Some great music though of course, and the idea for a brilliant game is in there, but it just falls apart when you try to actually play it. This goes for the entire trilogy. I can't help but imagine what this would have been like in the hands of a skilled Japanese studio, they could have easily fixed this game's myriad issues.
Still worth a playthrough for history's sake to see what they were going for.
I really fond the music of this game (LN2) but I found really strange that a medieval times (feudal Japan era) assassin strolling in 1980's New York...
I probably would have voted it a perfect 10 if it wasn't just for a couple of things which needed improving. You have a absolutely perfect game if you have these improvements.
Stage one if you forget something once you cross the water it asks you if you are ready for the next stage (ie do you need to go back to collect something) - unfortunately you cant go back to collect what you may have missed as you always fall into the water if you try go back,
The office stage trying to figure out how to open the secret door is definitely not obvious enough and next to impossible to work out and same could be said for escaping the rooftop to get to the mansion.
Other than those 3 criticisms the game is perfect, a true masterpiece of a game which in my eyes will always be the one game that pushed the Commodore 64 to its very limits.
I was so impressed with the music on the last stage, I kept on playing that over and over again.
I am happy I was able to finish it without help.
Gameplay suffers from all the problems of the first game. Next to impossible jumping sections and lack luster combat.
Great tech demo, but the playability was never there. It does win points for having an awesome tape loader though.
6/10
I appreciate that some people absolutely love it, but I just couldn't feel the playability.
I sometimes think about loading this up and trying to reach level 2 but after all of the therapy I don't think I can put myself through it again!
I'd also say that this game, as well as the other two LN games, are at their best on C64.
Technically it's all there, but the gameplay is the kind of clunky mess of awkward controls, item fetching and frustrating combat that we just wouldn't put up with these days.
Looks gorgeous though, and the soundtrack is possibly the best on the system. Overall a bit of a mixed bag and a bittersweet retro trip, but without doubt a true landmark title.
Better late than never...
The graphics and music were vastly superior to the original, for the most part. There was much greater variety in level design too.
People seem to have forgotten that the jump controls were greatly simplified for the sequel. In Last Ninja, there were three types of flips you could execute, which made traversing the cliched stepping stones a chore.
10/10
(Last Ninja 3 was a heap of crap, incidently)
Grafic and sound improvements and awesome level design made this game also in my top alltime favorites.
10/10
11/10 ...
Breath taking graphics and some of the best music ever to be heard on a C64.
Once you master the controls there's no excuse for not playing this masterpiece.
10/10 without a doubt.
The Amiga version is another story.
Just read my comment at Lemonamiga.

I was thinking... The C64 really is the best game platform ever... Better than the NES, Mega Drive (Genesis) and Playstation...
The Acorn Electron!!!
All the other versions are relatively disappointing!
For sure one of the best games for my C64, can you imagine buying a computer, just for one game???
Well, I did buy a C64 long before this game came out, but I would have bought one to play this!
Memories... Memories
Never understood why system 3 use a new engine for LN3 and Vendetta if they have the best Isoengine from LN2.
10/10
Last Ninja 1 was like a total addiction to me and I was affraid the sequel wouldn't be able to match it.
How happy I was that it was even more inventive and especially Modern!
Goosebumbs when I loaded the original tape after not using my C64 for some 10 years.
SIGH!!! Tnx system3
It's my absolute favourite C64 game, and it's the best in the series, no doubt about that!
10/10

The best game EVER!!!
Like Kenshiro, it also took me ages to figure out I had to push the boat.
The music, grpahics, gameplay, everything about this game was pure class, Ive still got the rubber ninja star!
Last Ninja 1&2 CLASSICS
One of the greatest games of all time on any platform!!!
did you ever heard anything better then the last ninja 2 soundtrack?
the levels 2 and 6 presentation's music are the best ever done!!!
Gbytes of hard drives.
$$'s of graphics cards.
4, 5, 6x1 sound cards.
Last ninja? I don't think. Sorry for today's kids.
8-bit machine... Yeah, maybe.
A jewel.
lastninja 2 was bull with all that time travel rubbish..
So much for one vote per person...
last ninja IS a good game, even though some did abuse the earlier voting system.
just play it for more than two minutes, and you'll see.
Somehow the mystical ancient Japan seemed a better place for a Ninja than modern New York.
LN2 has more puzzles than it's precessor, points for that! The music is excellent in it's own way, almost as good as Benn's work.
If you could place LN2 in the setting of LN1, you'd have the best game ever!
A must have for C64 fans. Even after a couple of years it's still worth playing.
LATER BRO!

Have to say my pers Action fac to c64
I still remeber the happy gametime we had with this one, and all the waiting we did before it came out.
One of the greatest games ever made on C64!
This had to be the greatest C64 game ever made! Who could ever forget Superman?
A great game of the C64 age, matched only by the original.
