A fondly remembered C64 title that offers a fun variety of game styles and challenges that make the overall game an entertaining package. It's not too difficult to beat once you've got to grips with each sections task, that is providing you can get those planes out of the hanger in one piece!

A 7 out of 10. It gets dull very quickly after you complete it, which in all honesty won't take forever. There is no randomness to any of the challenges, so once you perceive the patterns, you can almost play it blindfolded.

It was a good game back in the 80s, and one of several "multiple disciplines" games flourished back then like Beach Head, Aztec Challenge, Lazy Jones, Summer Games etc. - but not the bestest best of them.

Cracking game this one. Decent graphics and nice variation in the levels. The feeling when seeing the final screen after completing the game was great as well. Incidentally I never had a problem getting out of the hanger and found this very easy.

Fantastically fun - until you beat it, and then you basically lost interest. The final episode is probably somewhat anticlimactic compared to previous screens - bouncing disks off a wall to kill a drone??

I found getting out the hangar very easy. It's momentum based like thrust and other similar games.

This game caused a huge controversy in Finland back in it's day, which is hard to imagine now. Great, atmospheric graphics (if a bit too much grey), splendid animations and unique and mood uplifting, exciting sound effects made this game a real gem. I got stuck at shooting the capital building with the bazooka, as I never knew what I was supposed to do after shooting everything possible.

Challenging, but responsive gameplay and the satisfaction the player gets when shooting something big ensured the success of Raid Over Moscow.

As a sidenote; I can't believe anyone had trouble in getting out from the hangar - it's just the normal inertia-control that is in many games ever since Thrust and Gravitar, just in isometric mode.

I used to play it when I was 3 years old!! Awesome game. My father used to see me playing... He asked me to help him to get out from the hangar haha.

A true C64 classic! The Lord of the Flies - shouldn't be too hard on himself. After all, I took me forever before I learned how to even get out of the hanger, lol (F8) This is 1 of the games that epitomizes a real, great, C64 classic.

Oh, wow! Bruce Carver with Access Software made such great games for the C64, and this is no exception!

I had no instruction manual, so it took YEARS for me to figure out that I had to hit that levitating robot-thing in the reactor area ON IT'S BACK-SIDE--not it's front-side--with the disc to destroy it! Then I could blow up the reactor, not much problemo!

But I sill have yet to escape before it blows!

So still after now 26 years, I remain a KIA American Hero of the Cold War! :rip:

I'm gonna get out of that nuclear reactor before it blows if it's the last thing I do! :pirate:

This game plays an important role in Constantion Gllies' excellent novel "Extraleben". Anyone fluent in German should go out and read the book immediately. Believe me, you won't be disappointed!

Yeah, the hanger... I figured it out and this turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time. Nice mix of various game play elements really set this one apart for me plus it taught be about Soviet geography. I can still find Minsk on a map because of this game.

Thanks to the cheats that allowed you to jump the hangar level I made it to see all of this milestone of gameplay. I still like to play it. Congratulations to those among you who succeeded leaving the hangar. But: HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO IT? I'VE BEEN TRYING FOR 17 YEARS!!! :D

I tried the game first in my vg shop shortly after it came out and couldn't even leave the hangar... Then it sort of clicked and I started to like it, a lot. Nice graphics, good (albeit quite difficult) gameplay and presentation, not everyone's cup of tea, though. Once you get the hang of it it might just "click" like it did with me back then, so if you kinda like the game but the difficulty puts you off at first, keep at it and you may be in for hours of fun. 7/10.

I think they should have marketed "I made it out of the hangar" shirts.

The rest of the game was fun, but I'd dare say too easy in comparison!

Beach Head, Impossible Mission, Dr. J vs. Larry Bird, and THIS game were part of the very first batch of C64 games I owned. I was sad to see my Atari 400 go, but once I startes playing Raid, I quickly forgot! Clever design, and a hell of a lot of fun.

Yep, Beachhead and this. Very similar graphically. I loved them both.. But I had more fun with this one. The Zaxxon stuff on my C64 was just mouthwatering stuff.

I agree that just getting out of the hanger was a darn chore, but that sequence was really just a level in itself, not a throwaway action like it would be in a game today. I actually like details in games, like making that bit so difficult. Sort of the same with having to find food/water in an old RPG like Dungeon Master or when the controls just weren't quite right, delayed action or ???. That was part of the challenge for me.

10/10 Classic C64!

One of my first C64 games and one of my faves, but it was pretty tough! I also remember my parents shaking their heads in disgust that the games was about nuclear war and bombing the Russians!

The very first game I ever bought (or I should say my parents bought) for my C64... Loved it.. Still remember how ecstatic I was when I finally beat it, I think it took me a week to finally get out of the hangar.

Excelent combination of "standard" secuences with "weird" ones (like the "frisbee disk play inside the reactor". ) I'd like the game programmers of today have that freedom for imagination.

I'm from Yorkshire and I always thought the Y shaped craft on the Five Towers section of the game looked just like the Yorkshire Television logo of the 1980s.
I loved to see the Kremlin's towers topple but my fave level was the last where you had to throw the disc at the robot - super hard. 9/10
:D

An excellent game that I played so much that only the suicidal level was enough of a challenge. I used to adjust the SID filter settings to get the explosions just the way I liked.

If I remember correct, this game was also discussed in Finnish parliament at that time. We were so scared of SU, that we didn't want to insult them in any way. Someone wanted to ban this game, but that never happened.

Excellent playability once you mastered getting out of the hangar in the spaceship. A willing suspension of disbelief required for this non-politically correct game - I loved it once you got to the Kremlin or wherever and shot your way through to some nuclear reactor!

I hate pinkos! 2004-08-01
You're a commie pinko! We have the same sorts of games today--Desert Storm II: Back To Baghdad etc. I love people referring to it as "anti-Soviet hysteria". People just laugh off the real, actual threat of the Cold War as if it was some fictional event.

Anyway--I was a big fan of this one. However, I recall the game being rather short and not as cool as Beach Head. Yet, another fine Access game, none the less.

I think I learned all of my Russian geography from this one. I was the only kid in the 5th grade that knew where Nobobrisk was.
Fruitbat 2004-07-27
Wicked game, I loved playing this. Great atmosphere, great graphics and sound, and great fun to play. A classic!

A great game in the series of Beachhead!
The Down and Out 2004-05-13
If this game was a film it would be directed by gung ho Republican John Millius.
Just a thought. Are there any games on sale now titled 'Raid Over Baghdad or 'Raid Over Kabul'?
All the classic US Gold elements of gaming are on display here, adding up to a slice of anti-Soviet paranoia rarely seen now. A nice little game which gave me lots of fun-just call me the spinning disc man!
Ed Waddington 2004-05-06
I always thought this overrated, but it deserves kudos for being so un-PC. I think US Gold were even forced to release later versions as 'RAID! '.
John Keels 2004-03-26
Very cool game for the 64. I have to echo comments about trying to get out of the hangar. It was tough as hell! The mortar fire was pretty cool. This is definitely an 80's relic though as far as the story is concerned. Especially, since the USSR no longer exists.
brian 2004-02-22
I have just come over all emotional. What a blast this game was. Ah memories!!
Ironlord 2003-12-10
Just as everyone here has stated, this really is an all time classic C64 game. I played it and played it... And then... Played it some more!!! ... Way back in the day. And will still play it even now in 2003, I actually recently purchased an original 1984 copy of it from e bay, and it is still as playable as it ever was and is damn difficult in parts too. Will give the most seasoned of gamers a real challenge... And I still don't think I've ever seen the ending of the game!!! LOL I must try and complete it. Any C64 lovers out there who've never seen this game MUST GET HOLD OF A COPY NOW!!! I MEAN IT :O)
AlphaNum 2003-12-04
And yes... Getting out of the hanger in one piece rivals the last two levels for dificulty... Oh so many times weaving back and forth inside the hanger .. Just to line up the door and have it close... The key is minimalism, elevate, rotate, go...
AlphaNum 2003-12-04
This was, is, an excellent game. The environments you fly through are very interactive, the "bosses" are challanging, and near the end the last few levels are full of variety, interesting gameplay, and bang up ending... Add excellent controls and solid sound effects and it is golden classic to be sure.
owen hart 2003-11-28
A brilliant game to play, highly addictive. Another us gold classic

I saw the game on a tv-program, which had topical themes and news etc. The game was on it because of its political stance, he! Next day I was a proud owner of this!

There was a later edition when the Cold War eased off retitled "Raid on the Reds" Do you think anyone was fooled? Especially with the Kremlin sat in the middle of the game still.

Ahhhh, what a classic little beuty this is. Great varied gameplay, great graphics, crunchy sound FX.
these were the the days when true classics were made and make no mistake, the is a true classic.
Christian 2002-04-16
Yep, a real classic.
I first heared of it because it was "indiziert" here in Germany, which means that you couldn't buy it in stores but that made it extra crispy ;-). And it didn't disappoint me. Great graphics, great sound and great gameplay - that's what legends are made of. Worth 9 points IMHO, maybee 10
if you consider it is from 1984.
Matt 2002-04-02
A game I always wanted but never had, but now I do thanks to emulators. If you like "Beach Head" and "Beach Head II", you'll love "Raid Over Moscow". Great scenarios, great graphics, superb sound. And it can take a while to get your skills together. A fantastic game with fantastic gameplay.
Craig 2002-01-27
A great game - so fluid and varied with nice graphics and great sound - the disks of tron type game at the end was the icing on the cake for me - Just a classic

Magnificent. Must be the best explosion sound effects of any game on the 64 plus a great end sequence. One of my favourites.
