Originally: The player controls a teenage boy from the 20th century, who one day falls through a tear in the space-time continuum and is transported to the "Time of Legends." In the 16-bit version, the creators have presumably added some extra imagination to the look of the game.

Wait, why are you the muscle bound barbarian like on the cover in the 16bit versions but the C64 has you as some preppy Captain N / Guybrush Threepwood looking random collage kid? What's THAT all about?

This is peak c64 - miles better than the amiga version...... I will never forget the lighting effects on the norse boat level

A beautiful demonstration of what could be done on the 64 when you had the skills. Superb graphics and sound, a real treat to see top notch scrolling and animation of sprites.
Nice variety in the level design make this above average in gameplay although I wouldn't bother with it once I'd finished it. Not as great as some would like to think it to be.

MYTH by the legendary developers System 3, this blew my mind back in 1990. The first thing that I noticed is Maniacs of Noise sublime introduction tune (check out YouTube for 12 piece orchestra video) it is one of my favourite SID tunes ever. The game itself is a platform adventure with some puzzle elements throughout, probably to extend the playtime. I remember struggling a bit with controls but as was acceptable you persevere thru and are eventually accustomed to it. The sprites are very well animated and there was some speech thrown in to immerse you deeper into this adventure. I could be wrong but I think this was also on NES as Conan.

So yeah... I have this on tape and Cart and I still think it
s a OK game. Love the concept and it plays well but it
s hardly brilliant. Very frustrating and I can
t be bothered to persevere. However, if only more games had this amount of thought and concept. It's definitely worth giving it a go.

Technically brilliant and a really exciting game for me at the time. Very well presented and atmospheric to play- I've always been intrigued by the legends of old and did enjoy seeing them come to life and interacting with them on screen. I found it very difficult though and that limited my enjoyment somewhat. I want to like it enough to buy again now, but with less time to devote to gaming nowadays I can't see myself persevering as much with this one.. !

Phenomenal graphics, so-so playability. I persevered with the game, thanks to a solution from an old issue of Commodore Format, but the Egypt level was too much, so I quit. What a shame, a reasonable difficulty level and in-game music would have turned this to one of the greats. :|

8/10. I would have rated it higher, but I preferred the Amiga version overall. Still an awesome game though  :P :)

This game still impresses me today. The animation was lovely, level design exciting and the Sound was just perfect. I will never forget how good the echo was on the Medusa/Hydra level.
A near perfect game spoiled only by the rather lacklustre final battle.
Love it loads. :D

This game was crying for sequels. They could keep the same engine and make some multi-load monster of a game with many areas, puzzles, story line... Shame this code remained idle. System 3 recycled LNinja engine quite a lot, Dizzy egg had many stories, Rick D. Had a sequel, but this one was left alone...

Myth looks and sounds very very good. I love it for all those reasons. I am with all the people that find playability questionable. To be brutally honest, I did not find Myth all that much fun at all. The only way I got to see the graphics was by using a cracked version complete with level skip.

I just don't understand why this one is soo overated!?

I find it very awkward to control, sprites are blocky and just nothing that seems great about it?

A rate it a 3/10

I remember this being the first video game I OBSESSED over for months... Yes, it's tough, but it has the hands down best theme tune and animation in a C64 platformer. The section in Medusa's lair is amazing- it's just a shame the 3rd level is so bloody hard (the collision det. Is very precise!)... All C64 fans owe it to themselves to play through this at least once...

Myth is overhyped by many C-64 fanboys IMO. The game is good but not excellent. The problem being the tough / a bit sluggish controls and movements of the main character and scrolling all resulting in unnecessarily increased gameplay difficulcy. 7/10

This was indeed the Prince of Persia of it's day, the jump animation was slick. The puzzles were interesting but very hard. The locations were really atmospheric. Only gripe was it was quite hard. I think I could only ever get as far as a Viking ship in a storm (awesome level) and then I couldn't figure out what to do.

Jeroen Tel made incredible loading tune for this game. Which was a cream on a top of probably the best arcade/puzzle game made on C64. System 3 really did fine job with this title. Can't prize it enough. Amiga had it's Another World and Flashback, but Commie had Myth. Which was better than Amiga version in terms of gameplay, by the way.

A deceptively puzzling platformer with top notch presentation and deep gameplay.

Good tribute site:

This had to have the best music of any C64 game. Fantastic stuff. Also loved the game itself, but I often had the misfortune of experiencing a bug on the level with the lady in the fire, whereby I couldn't possibly complete it. It was sort of a 1 in 3 thing as to whether I'd get past it or not.

Nice gameplay, but I hate that when you die it has to load the presentation again and loading times just bother me. Couldn't they let you start again from level1 directly?

Absolutely gorgeous and with great music (where applicable), great story to go with it... But the gameplay wasn't as good. It's still a good game, but if it weren't for the impeccable presentation this game would be decisively average for certain. To be specific, it's too hard.

"welcome to Myth". This just couldn't have started any better! What a totally belting game! Brill GFX and animation, nice level design and above all great gameplay. The 64 pushed to its limits and so it'll be written in the histoty of all things great on the commy!

As a little kid I found especially the first level ( the manticore!) very spooky. And as I grew up and learnt/read about each of the myths in myth in real life I was like wtf! Those were actually myths!

PS. I noticed before further down the comments list that some people were calling this game CRAP! Or SHIT! Well folks I know we're all entitled to our own opinions so now it's time for mine... Anyone calling this game CRAP really hasn't got a FU@^*NG clue what they are talking about and should really just shut up and go away and play Frogger or something!!! THANKYOU AND GOODNIGHT!
Ironlord 2004-08-04
Well well well, this really is an all time classic C64 game. I played it looaaddssss back in the day on my C64, then a couple of years later played it on the Amiga too, which is another great version! I always thought (and still do now) that the GFX were awesome, and the music equally so, and gameplay ALWAYS kept me coming back for more. And to top it all off magnificently, thanks to e bay, I just won a good condition boxed copy of it on cartridge with instructions for £51 and I've been trying to seek it out now for well over a year so I'm over the moon at finally finding it. I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY THIS NOW WHEN IT ARRIVES IN THE POST, YEEEEYYYYY!!! :) overall I'd give it 10/10 definitely... I SALUTE THEE!!!

Wesome, just wesome.
Jungle Ninja 2004-06-10
This is truly a classic and should be in the top 20 of the C64 games of all time. I like this game and still play it on the Amiga. Played it in the 80's on the C64 and was totally swept of my feet and couldn't think clear until I finished it time and time again.
Dr.Gonzo 2004-06-02
After 5 years of C64 gaming, this was the last Commodore game I ever bought. Brings a tear to my eye, thinking back ...
qazi 2004-03-23
Wesome, is it Matt? :D
Matt 2004-02-18
Ooooh this game is WESOME! It's just too good to be true!
surely history in the making. This is simply the best game *EVER* made for the C64, or perhaps the very best game ever on any system!
Hannu Grén 2004-02-16
I've tried this a couple of times, it seems like I could enjoy this game if everything would be clear but... I just somehow can't immerse myself properly enough into this game. Technically thinking: graphics OK, controls seem to work well enough, and the music/SFX... Great! I was amazed when I heard "Welcome to Myth! ".
It was really amazing.. Maniacs of Noise has done some of the best sonics ever on C64 scene! Pete Baron, if you read this then I'd like to hear more about MoN, and this game, for instance. Is this game based on a movie? The atmosphere feels like that... And I also have to say that Turbo Outrun's theme is SUPERB!
Swissjack 2004-02-01
Very stylish graphics!!! Myth showed what the C64 can do in graphics. Sound was also very well done. I had some problems to control the nice animated sprite, but the work was worth it! Myth is not history in the making, but a game to remember! 9/10
martina 2004-01-30
Those who say this game is crap should go cook an egg: it's a great game and the music is wonderful!
Boçù 2003-11-20
Great idea, very good title tune, excellent spot FX, probably the best main character animation in any C64 game and very good graphics all through (norsk thundering level, the Medusa...). Shame it's so bloody hard, but it's a C64 classic nonetheless. 8/10
BTW I'd like to know who is this idiot multiple posting here under different names to say this game's crap. Does anybody pay you for doing that?
Maxx 2003-11-15
One of the C64's finest.
Shaun 2003-11-12
Love the graphics, the main character animation is really very good. Sound fx also are cool. Game play, it's a little bit on the difficult side and not much fun.
Ritchie 2003-11-10
I don't want to get into any arguments but this game could of been better. But you'll only know if you play it.
TheForce 2003-07-21
This is a great game, for that time it looked really awseome !! And the music from the Maniacs of noise was GEWELDIG. It also had some very good sfx. System3 really knew their stuff on the C64. I have some good memories of this game.
Mr P 2003-06-11
Everybody has their favorites, and this was defo mine. Difficult yes, but perseverance paid off with a good puzzle(egyptian style) toward the end of L3 and a great shoot-em up end (L4) against Dameron. Anybody know why Sys 3 didn't make Dawn of Steel (Myth 2)? And I've still got it on tape if anyone wants a copy.
Cadaver 2003-05-22
A game with great presentation, especially the animations are special (for example, the sword is always correctly positioned in the player's hand). It also achieves a nice blend between combat & puzzles. But must admit I rarely played this without trainers. Automatic energy drain is pure Satan!!!
Lemonope 2003-05-15
Gee! Look, Arguing over a C64 game! LOL... With all those comments of good and bad. I personality think Myth is a little overrated, and I found this game a bit too hard to enjoy... But I do plan on catching up with this game one day and finish this, so the game is good, but its definately not a top 10 game. I would put it around 128/3660 Lemon64 Games.
Elvin Atombender 2003-05-15
Don't feed the trolls. I'm really sorry there are so many of them wandering around lately. This site would be gorgeous without assholes like you. Myth is a piece of C64 history. Enough said.
EvilWallPaper 2003-05-10
This game isn't shit, its an amazing game with great gameplay and a theme that was truely trying something diffrent for the time. Always loved this game played it alllllot.
TWR 2003-04-22
A game I never had back in the days, I've only tested the emulator game. But what a game... BRILLIANT !!! Fantastic graphics and sound !!! Gameplay that is stunning !!! One of the best ever... History in the making !!!
Captain Casper 2003-04-17
What a superb game - it even stands the test of time now. Well worth the £9. 99 I paid for it!! Awesome music from the Maniacs, beautiful graphics and tough gameplay that addicted you.
Got the soundtrack on CD in my car.
Anyone got the ringtone for a C68i?
Boçù 2003-03-14
Wow Pete Baron here! You made some amazing games on the C64, it's great to see you here! I suggest you to visit the Forum, it's friendly, it's great and there are some other C64 celebrities as well :) Cheers.
Pete Baron 2003-03-14
Glad you you liked it.

The sample at the start was from Bob's girlfriend at the time - we just threw it in because we had some space on the disk :)
We had to argue very hard to keep the norse level the way it was with the lightning and the total black between bolts - but I always loved that level because it was so extreme.
Oh and Joonas, the trick to the Egyptian level is to pay attention to the hieroglyphics in the background.

This is a great site, I'll be coming back again!
Matt 2002-12-22
Screenshots of all levels would be cool! :)
Daz 2002-12-09
One of the best games ever! I'm desperate to get hold of a version of this game. Anyone out there still got it on cassette or cart?
Rami 2002-10-12
Quite difficult but truly amazing game! Theme music is definitely one of the best ever!
MoparJunkie 2002-08-18
This has to be one of my all time favourite games. It was just amazing for a 64 game. The graphics and animation were both great, but the sound was simply amazing, especially the speech. I never quite finished it though!
BonzRacer 2002-07-24
Simply one of the 10 best games ever made for the 64! Graphic quality, animation, speech music and varied levels almost second to none... Can't believe that after 1190 votes it's rated 6. 6...
I Rate 93/100
Joonas Laakso 2002-06-19
I bought the game twice - first the disc version which I somehow broke, and then the cartridge version, which stopped working when I managed to bust my cartridge slot. Anyway, a great game, although I never got past the Egyptian level.
Luc Teveris 2002-03-18
2nd (to Emlyn Hughes) best game for the Commodore! Outstanding graphics, with very well designed monsters, and suggestive music/sfx convey lots of atmosphere to the hero's deeds. There are some bugs in the Norse level and the ending is a disappointment, but it nevertheless deserves a 9/10. And check out the goddess speak ("welcome to Myth";) at the beginning!
Can 2002-02-23
Best game music ever made! I still listen the soundtrack in my discman.
Colin 2002-01-14
Myth??? WOW!!!
barre 2002-01-10
THE best game ever made on C64!
score should be at least 9, 9!!!
Matt 2002-01-01
Simply one of the all time greatest games ever made on any system!
Sik 2001-12-29
Epic platform adventure from those games kings System 3! Best character animation since Impossable Mission! Vast, varied and always stunning levels topped off with a great Jeroen Tel soundtrack that fits the game just great!
