How to Install ‘PPSSPP’ and Play PSP Games on iOS with the PSP-to-iOS Emulator[with or without Jailbreak]

When the project ppsspp was launched, I thought it would be a flop. But now I realize that the developers mean serious business. In the course of this article, I will be taking you through the nitty-gritty of how you can install and run Sony PlayStation Portable games on your Apple iOS Devices. You may want to ask the question, what is ppsspp? PPSSPP is a PSP emulator written in C++ and translates PSP CPU instructions directly into optimized x86, x64, and ARM machine code, using JIT recompilers (dynarecs).

About PPSSPP

PPSSPP can run on quite low-spec hardware, including stronger ARM-based phones and tablets, as long as there’s support for OpenGL ES 2.0.

I have tried it on my computer, and it works flawlessly with most games I tried on it. I also tried some fun with it on my Galaxy S3 & got some fantastic 60 frames per secs. The major device left for me then was iOS, and this was because the first release for iOS devices wasn’t fully functional. After all, it couldn’t use Just in Time (JIT) on the iOS.

However, the developers have overcome that hurdle and have gotten JIT fully functioning. Note not all PSP games are playable on PPSSPP,

PPSSPP – an Open Source Project

PPSSPP is an open-source project licensed under the GPL 2.0 (or later). Anyone is welcome to contribute their improvements to the code, and the hope is that this will resolve the compatibility problem over time, letting us all play the PSP games we want on the devices of our choice.

PPSSPP is free to download and use.

How to Install Ppsspp Emulator for PSP games on iOS Devices without a Jailbreak

It is very important first to know how to source for .iso psp ROMs before installing a ppsspp emulator. You can follow my instructions here on how to get free game roms online. As I said, this trick can work on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch without a jailbreak. Just make sure the iOS version is iOS 9 or newer.

• Step 1: Visit https://iosem.us/ and download the iOS emu client for iDevices without jailbreak. Alternatively, you can download and install the ppsspp app via https://emus4udownload.org. I think tweakbox and appvalley also host the app.
• Step 2: Now install the iOSEmus app or emus4u on your iDevice and open it. Once you’re there, hit on emulators and scroll down until you see PPSSPP. Tap on that, hit the “Install” button, and await confirmation.  Then, hit “Install” again. You can now go back to the app dock by pressing the Home button, and the application “PPSSPP” will install wherever your device has space on the screen.
• Step 3: Once installed, you must manually allow access to iOS 9+ iDevices. But if you’re running anything below iOS 9, you will get a pop-up, and you can hit “Trust,” and the app will launch.
• To activate this app on iOS 9 and newer, go to Settings>>General and scroll down till you see “Profile” tab. Tap on the profile to see PPSSPP, hit Trust “CMN VIET NAM ONLINE…..” and tap on trust when the pop-up appears. Now, you can launch the PSP Emulator app called PPSSPP on your iOS device. 

How to Import and Run Your PSP Games into PPSSPP App

Now to import games on your iDevices, you need a PC or Mac. First, visit my link here to get working psp game roms. Please ensure they are compatible with ppsspp, though, where you can search all PPSSPP-supported games.

Steps to Run PSP Games via Ppsspp App on iOS

Step 2: You must decompress/extract the files to reveal the .iso game file. Once the file is removed, you must connect your iOS device to your PC or Mac and open iTunes.

Step 3: Now Tap on the icon for your device and select apps. Scroll down to “File sharing“. If PPSSPP doesn’t show up immediately, just hit Sync, and it will show. Now click on PPSSPP to highlight it, and click “Add File” in the bottom right. Then, go to the location where the ROM was downloaded and saved. In my case, it’s on the Desktop. Now, select and Double-Click on that, and you’ll see a nice little loading bar at the top showing you how far or long it is.

Recommended Graphics Settings for PPSSPP

• Mode: Buffered rendering
• Frame skipping: 1
• Tick Auto Frameskip
• Check Lazy texture caching (speedup)
• Tick Disable Slowe effects (speedup)
• Speed Line Curves – Set it to “Low”
• Tick Timer hack
• Disable Stencil Test
• Tick texture Coord Speedhack (speedup)
• Always write depth ON

Audio Settings:

• Enable Sound
• Set Audio latency to Low
• check Sound Speed Hack

Important Notice: Do not change the control settings, as it’s not required. However, you can adjust the transparency of the controllers according to your choice.

System Setting:

• Fast memory ON
• JIT ON
• Change CPU clock: 400

How to Install & run PSP ISO Games on iOS Devices via  PPSSPP[Jailbreak devices only]

• First off, you need to jailbreak your iOS device and install Cydia.
• Secondly, search for and download the ppsspp application from Cydia. You can find it from the following repository http://cydia.myrepospace.com/theavenger

• I will advise you to use iPhone 4s or newer for better performance
• I repeat, your iPhone must be jailbroken so that you can have access to your file system
• You need  to manually install PSP GAME ROMs by extracting the ones in your game console and converting them from .cso to .iso using software like  PSP ISO Compressor v1.4 or newer
• You need to copy the .iso game roms to your device using such tools as iFunbox. The directory to copy it to on iDevices running iOS 5 is “var/mobile/media/roms/”
• But if you run iOS 6   copy the .iso roms to var/mobile/Documents/admob
• If you experience any lag, try switching off the sound and enabling frame-skipping
