LUN 17.03.2014

Who was he? Juan Carlos Ablanedo (b. Mieres, Asturias, 1963) was a Spanish goalkeeper who played for one club for his whole career: Real Sporting de Gijón.

What is he remembered for? For his devotion and loyalty to the colours of the Asturian side, where he spent 15 years and played in almost 400 Liga BBVA matches. Ablanedo was also one of the great goalkeepers in the '80s and early '90s, winning the Zamora Trophy for goalkeepers three times (1985, 1986, 1990) and a member of the Spanish national side during the FIFA World Cups in 1986 and 1990.

What became of him? After his retirement in the 1998/1999 campaign, Ablanedo decided to qualify as an estate agent and start his own business.

Did you know? His brother José Luis was also a Sporting player, though he was a defender. His footballing name therefore became 'Ablanedo II'.
