LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Commemorate the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who advocated nonviolent activism during the Civil Rights Movement and protested racial discrimination in federal and state laws.

Calcasieu Parish

Jan. 12

  • 40th Annual MLK Prayer Breakfast - At the L’Auberge Casino Resort beginning at 7:30 a.m. For tickets, you can call 337-491-9955.
  • Prayer Walk - At 9 a.m. beginning at the MLK Center in Lake Charles on 2009 N. Simmons St.

Jan. 13

  • Vessel Project of Louisiana’s Coat Drive - To be held at 10 a.m. at Sunlight Manor on Winterhalter in Lake Charles ahead of the freezing weather expected next week.
  • Men’s Symposium - At the MLK Center in Lake Charles on 2009 N. Simmons St. beginning at 8 a.m.

Jan. 14

  • MLK Gospel Extravaganza - At Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Lake Charles on 3007 Enterprise Blvd. beginning at 5 p.m.

Jan. 15

  • Lake Charles MLK Parade - To register for the parade or to become a vendor you can fill out a form from KZWA and submit it at their studio at 305 Enterprise Blvd. in Lake Charles. Parade route details will be announced as they become available. The start time of the parade has been moved from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. due to anticipated cold temperatures.

Jan. 15

  • C&B Community Organization Annual MLK Celebration - Held at DeRidder City Hall. The car show will be at 10 a.m. in the City Hall parking lot by the railroad tracks. The MLK celebration begins at noon with speakers, and then there will be a march to Norris Memorial Church. Free food and drinks.

Jan. 11

  • Spelling bee/Oratorical Contest - Held at the Leesville Martin Luther King Community Center at 1003 N. Gladys St. beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Jan. 13

  • Health Fair/Blood Drive - Held at the Leesville Martin Luther King Community Center at 1003 N. Gladys St. beginning at 10 a.m.
  • Scholarship Banquet - Held at the Leesville Martin Luther King Community Center at 1003 N. Gladys St. beginning at 7 p.m.

Jan. 14

  • Worship Service - Held at Leesville’s Plesant Hill Baptist Church at 1210 MW Harrison St. beginning at 7 p.m.

Jan. 15

  • Leesville MLK Parade and Rally - Held at the Leesville Martin Luther King Community Center at 1003 N. Gladys St. beginning at 9 a.m.
