FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Police search for suspects after a man is left in critical condition from a weekend hit-and-run in the Tower District.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer held a news conference Monday afternoon about the crash that happened early Sunday morning.

Chief Dyer says a woman made a 9-1-1 call Sunday at 1:44 a.m. about a car hitting a pedestrian outside the restaurant.

Police say after bumping into each other, the victim, 36-year-old John Rodriguez, (below) and another man got in a fight outside Bobby Salazar’s on Olive Ave.

Police say Rodriguez was struck by the other man and got pushed into the street.

He was trying to get up when a white Chrysler 300 hit him and did not stop.

There were two Fresno police officers assigned to Bobby Salazar’s when it happened, who did not see the crash but found the victim, in the road with no pulse.

He was unresponsive and turning blue when EMS arrived.

Rodriguez was transported to CRMC in critical condition where he was treated for a skull fracture, a fractured vertebra, and other serious injuries.

Police says according to witnesses, Rodriguez was walking on Olive Avenue when he got into an argument with a passing male subject. The suspect shoved Rodriguez from the sidewalk into the street, causing him to stumble into the roadway where he was struck by a passing white four door sedan. Immediately after striking him, the sedan accelerated West on Olive fleeing the scene.

Officers began providing emergency treatment along with the help of an off-duty nurse.

Rodriguez was taken to the hospital with severe head trauma.

Chief Dyer says detectives were able to obtain video both from the scene that shows the male suspect who struck the victim, video of the car on the street, and video from a gas station, that shows the female driver and three men from the car inside the mini mart.
