Follicular development

Antral follicles are a stage of follicular development in which they still contain an immature oocyte inside. However, in each menstrual cycle, one of them will be susceptible to develop into a pre-ovulatory follicle and give rise to the ovulation of a mature oocyte.

These antral follicles are characterised by the fact that they begin to accumulate follicular fluid inside and are visible by ultrasound from 1-2 mm in diameter.
