Update: Carrasco’s return on loan has been made official. He is now training with the team.

Yannick Carrasco is on his way back to Atlético Madrid, according to multiple reports.

Marca says the winger is in Madrid and ready to sign. Diario AS also say he is in Madrid and will be announced tomorrow, on deadline day. Fabrizio Romano also says it is close to being done.

The Belgian played under Simeone for three seasons before he left for Chinese club Dalian Yifang in Feb. 2018. He had been linked with a move back to Europe, to Arsenal specifically, in the past but nothing transpired. After two successful seasons in the Chinese Super League, Carrasco now ready to return to Madrid — where he got to and scored in a Champions League final under Cholo.

At his best, Carrasco was hard to stop. But like so many creative and adventurous players in the past, he clashed with Simeone, which contributed to his surprising exit during the Europa League-winning campaign. He played 124 times during his first stint with Atlético, scoring 23 goals with 17 assists.

Atlético tried and failed to sign Edinson Cavani for the duration of the transfer market. The team needs attacking help and Carrasco has wanted to return to Europe for some time. Helping matters along is that Dalian Yifang are owned by the Wanda Group — which also sponsors the Wanda Metropolitano.
