When news first broke that Jonathan Scott popped the question to Zooey Deschanel while vacationing in Scotland back in August, the internet couldn’t help but notice the actress’s unique engagement ring: a silver band set with clear, silver, and purple flower-shaped stones. Well, the Property Brothers star is finally setting the record straight on why he opted to propose with such an interesting ring — and it turns out, it was actually all Deschanel’s idea.

When talking to People during the pair’s first interview as an engaged couple, Scott explained that he paid close attention to Deschanel’s jewelry taste when shopping for rings, even going so far as to pick it out a year prior to the proposal.

“I immediately screen-grabbed that and held onto it for a long time,” Scott said of the moment Zooey mentioned she liked the ring in passing. “That was the one she got."

But although the HGTV star may have decided on the style a year in advance, there were still a few tweaks that had to be made after the fact.

"I measured so badly. I was trying to figure out what ring size..." Jonathan shared with Zooey joking, “He's like, 'What ring size is a woman?' I'm a 4.75. That's my ring size in case anybody wants to buy me a ring.”

Scott then quickly shut down any potential jewelry gifters by quipping, “Better not. She's off the market."

Elsewhere in the interview, the newly engaged couple (who dated first for four years) also opened up about the sweet way Zooey's kids got involved on the big day.

“I didn't want to decide what was happening until I knew,” the actress shared when recounting the first moments of the proposal, with Scott adding, “And then the kids pulled a banner out that said, 'Zooey, will you marry me?'”

“When Elsie turned around and read the sign, she immediately goes, ‘Did you just get married?’And we’re like, ‘Well, no, not yet. But we got engaged!’” Jonathan continued. “And she's like, ‘Does that mean I get to be a flower girl?’ And we're like, ‘Yes. Yes you can.’ So it was really sweet to have them there too.”
