10-50(-90) cm hoch, kräftig, unten beblättert, scharf 3kantig. Blätter hellgrün, steif, 5-10 mm breit. Blütenstand mit 4-10 Ästen, diese bis 15 cm lang, an der Spitze die 6-12 mm langen, bräunlichen oder gelblichen Ährchen tragend. Ährchenachse geflügelt. Blütenstand von 2-9 Hochblättern teilweise überragt. Narben 3. Tragblätter am Rücken gerundet. Frucht halb so lang wie diese, dunkelgrau oder rötlich. Essbar sind die 1-2 cm langen Wurzelknöllchen.
