Thanatos - The ultimate 80's Dragon flight simulator? (Review)

Today's review will take us back into the mists of time, to an age of myth and magic, of sword and sorcery, of dragons and knights fighting over a fair maiden. Back, specifically, to 1986, where Mike 'The Knight' Richardson was defending the Kingdom of Durell against the forces of the underworld, assisted by his tame dragon, Thanatos the Destroyer.

Willy's New Mansion Special Edition - Daniel Gromann's twelfth anniversary ZX Spectrum release

Way back in the early 80's Matthew Smith released Jet Set Willy, the sequel to Manic Miner for the ZX Spectrum and ported to most other home computers by the publisher Software Projects. Playing as Jet Set Willy in a flip-screen platform game you needed to move from room to room in his mansion collecting objects from a previous party otherwise Maria the house keeper wouldn't let you back in to his bedroom. But today in 2016 in celebration of the twelfth anniversary ZX Spectrum release of the fan game Willy's New Mansion by Daniel Gromann, he has made available the Special Edition which takes his game and improves upon it in a very big way.

SRAM 2 - CINOMEH'S REVENGE - 8-bit Adventure remake features 30 graphic modes, coming soon

Arjon van Dam, the same developer behind the work in progress adventure game ' Futurama ' and 'Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (AGI)', has recently announced SRAM 2 - CINOMEH'S REVENGE, a PC remake of the late 80's text based adventure game which was first released for the Amstrad CPC and PC ( MS-DOS ). Now you probably haven't heard of this game before, that's because it is rather obscure and was entirely in French. With Arjon Van Dam's talent the game will be released for the PC and Linux and completely in English.

Risky Rick - Rick Dangerous port in development for the CBS Colecovision

Here on Indie Retro News we've always had a soft spot for the Core Design and published by Firebird in 1989 game 'Rick Dangerous'. It is a very challenging action platformer that made you feel like an Indiana Jones character traversing dangerous locations such as caves and temples, avoiding the bad guys and making sure you didn't get hurt by deadly spikes and rolling boulders. It was such a well known game it appeared on the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and DOS but there was a system it didn't appear on, and that was the CBS Colecovision, at least until now.

OutRun CPC - An Amstrad CPC style remake of a hit racer gets a beta update

In 1986 Sega released one of the coolest racers of our time, it was none other than Out Run. An Arcade racer designed by Yu Suzuki, that was not only a commercial success but became one of the best selling games of its time with great graphics, fantastic music and fast paced track racing. It was just a shame however, the Amstrad CPC port was terrible with poor frame rates, colours and sound effects. So it was no wonder, a creator by the name of barbarian.1987 set out to fix all these problems while making the game incredibly smooth since 2012 as a PC port called ' OutRun CPC '.

The Videokid - Ride a skateboard in this wicked Paperboy inspired game!

What do you get if you have the original Paperboy, replace his newspapers with pirate video tapes and change his bike to a skateboard? Most likely this voxel based arcade game, ' The Videokid ', which is being developed by Pixel Trip Studios and is now aiming for a Steam Greenlight success for both PC and MAC. In this game you play as the video kid set in a retro 1980's neighbourhood filled with danger, you must deliver your pirate videos to everyone on the street while pulling off manic tricks and slick combos to finally reach your girlfriend in time.

Skullstone - Dungeon Master inspired Dungeon Crawler coming 2017

One things for certain, you can never get sick of too many dungeon crawlers, especially as each one gives you a choice of characters, plenty of loot to find and dark cramped dungeons to explore filled with evil creatures in need of a tasty human meal. And so welcome to ' Skullstone ' developed by Polish developers Black Torch Studios for a release date of 2017; a new first person dungeon crawler inspired by that classic Dungeon Master with more than just vast levels to fight through.

Red Alert 2 remade in Unreal Engine 4 and featuring VR!

One of our good friends Ethan Knight has just come across a really eye opening bit of news, as the RTS classic ' Red Alert 2 ' developed by Westwood Studios and published by EA in 2000, has been shown off as a proof of concept in Unreal Engine 4 by Ádám Horváth. Not just that, but this seriously good RTS which is still very playable today, is being played using VR (HTC Vive in room scale mode). I think you'll agree this is mighty impressive and shows off the follow-up to Command & Conquer: Red Alert in a completely new light.

Salamander - Konami's Shoot Em Up improved on the MSX2

The weather is naff outside as it's cold and it's wet but thankfully to warm us up and push our adrenaline through the roof, is the recent improved MSX release of the great shoot em up game ' Salamander ', which was released in the late 80s from the Arcades as a spin off from Gradius by that famous company ' Konami'. Although Salamander was released on many other systems such as the Amstrad, C64 and ZX Spectrum, the MSX version did not feature smooth scrolling and now thanks to Victor an enhanced version with smooth scrolling and bug fixes was released but for the MSX2.

Goblin Towers - Classic 1980s C64 Text Adventure Release

Text Adventures were many of our first forays into video gaming. Similar to the Adventure stories we would get as books each adventure was usually a unique, and fulfilling story combined with puzzles, traps, loot, and enemies. The latest Genesis Project release on csdb is one such classic adventure game: "Goblin Towers" by Supersoft It features the game's cover art, some hints, a map and walkthrough if you get stuck, as well as both 1983 and 1987 versions of the game. 1987s release features a unique font set, bezel graphics, and your score is displayed throughout the game, as well as more detail about each of the game's locations. For a more simplified experience, you can play through the 1983 version, which was written in assembler and retains the default colour pallette of the C64 BASIC screen, but otherwise, plays the same story as the later release.

Sir Ababol 2 - The Mojon Twins time to shine with a new Amstrad CPC game

Seriously I can't keep up with all these classy Amstrad games, not that I'm complaining too much but I'll have to eat some time. Anyway thanks to a heads up by Retrotaku here is the next Amstrad game and it's from those well known retro guru's The Mojon Twins, with 'Sir Ababol 2 - The Ice Palace'. Now you may have heard of the game name before, that's because Sir Ababol did actually appear on the C64, with a sequel released on the ZX Spectrum in 2014. So now it is 2016 and anyone who has an Amstrad or an emulator can join in the fun to climb the six towers of Freezia to face and fight the princes and princesses turned into bats so you can finally destroy the evil Alastor.

It puts you in control of the sorceress Hecatia who has to collect nine black lamps, through a dungeon to defeat the evil warlock Lycurgus with a secondary goal to collect keys and unlock ten treasure chests. Sound like your sort of game? Good! Because just moments ago the first version was made available for download!

WinUAE 3.4.0 Beta 15 - Amiga Emulator beta update features speed improvements

More good news for the Amiga as Toni Wilen is still hard at work on his Amiga Emulator WinUAE and has released ' WinUAE 3.4.0 Beta 15 ' in both 32bit and 64bit. You may wonder why we didn't mention beta 14 that's because from many of the reports on the EAB forums, it wasn't particularly speed optimized with older betas being faster. Now on to beta 15 and it looks as if Toni has improved it with one such user noting a " 25% improvement '. As ever please see the changelog for more details including a WASAPI sound fix related to hanging.

Heart Of The Alien Redux Amiga v1.0 - Another World sequel as an Amiga port gets an Amiga CD32 beta release

Only just recently the Amiga community was blown away by the announced release of the Sega CD exclusive ' Heart of the Alien ' appearing on the Amiga as an incredible port known as ' Heart Of The Alien Redux Amiga V1.0. The sequel to the amazing 1991 Delphine Software ' Another World ', but instead was developed by Interplay Entertainment. Was fully ported over with everything intact, including cutscenes, gameplay, sound and even music. But yet there was another system it wasn't ported to and that was the Amiga CD32, which today thankfully has actually appeared as a beta optimized release by the hard work of DJM and sharing of Earok.

CPCRetroDev 2016 - Outlaws wins overall in the Amstrad CPC dev compo

With only a few months left before we begin 2017, the #CPCRetroDev 2016 has finished and gone out with a bang with possibly the best Amstrad games seen at a CPC dev competition. The 4th edition of the retro game creation contest held at the University of Alicante, saw a number of entries and part of the Jury was none other than The Oliver Twins, famous for games such as the Dizzy series. In actual fact the CPCRetroDev 2016 was a resounding success, more so for the developers Retrobytes Productions 2016, as their game ' Outlaws ' not only won the PRO award coming first place, but also the music award and innovation.
