Britney Spears’s brother Bryan says that his sister has “always” wanted to get out of her conservatorship.

The singer’s 43-year-old brother appeared on the As NOT Seen on TV podcast, where he discussed the ongoing court case surrounding his sister’s conservatorship, which leaves the handling of her professional and personal affairs to specially-selected care providers.

“She’s been in this thing for quite some time now,” Bryan Spears said. “Obviously there was a need for it in the beginning. Now they’ve made some changes and all we can do is hope for the best.”

Shutting down rumours from fans that Spears is being “held against her will”, he insisted that the conservatorship had ultimately been “a great thing for our family, to this point”, before adding: “She's always wanted to get out of it. It's very frustrating to have.

“Whether someone’s coming in peace to help or coming in with an attitude, having someone constantly tell you to do something has got to be frustrating. She’s wanted to get out of it for quite some time.”

With Spears having risen to fame as a teenager, her brother pointed out that she had “been surrounded by a team of people since she was 15”, asking: “I know what she wants but at the end of the day, what is the reality of that? What is the practicality of that?”

The Independent has approached Spears’s representatives for comment.

Earlier this week, Spears’s other sibling Jamie Lynn also spoke out in defence of her “badass” sister after a fan commented on her “obvious mental illness”.

“You have no right to assume anything about my sister, and I have NO right to speak about HER health and personal matters,” she wrote. “She is a strong, badass, and unstoppable woman, and that’s the only thing that is OBVIOUS.”

In May, Spears’s conservatorship was extended by a judge until at least August. It was originally managed by her father, who stepped down from the role in 2019.
