Butaque Colonial Chairs, Indonesia second half of the 20th century

$ 7,315
  • Description
    These chairs are aesthetically arresting and design-wise, a mixture of the iconic butaque chair and Indonesian colonial planter chairs. The butaque, a Colonial-era hybrid of Spanish X-frame chairs and pre-Columbian ritual duhos, proliferated across trade routes and appeared in various iterations through the centuries.

    Many well known architects, such as Luis Barragán, used Clara Porset's version of the butaque chair in their interiors. Largely influenced by contemporary American and European styles, but having some indigenous features (such as greater variety in woods), colonial furniture are quite distinctive and radiate history. This pair was constructed with extraordinary care using hardwood and saddle leather. From the scrolled arms, seats to the curved legs, the woodworking is exceptional. The wood is not overworked, letting its natural qualities and appeal define the chair frames. The curve create by the bent backs and raised seats make these chairs highly ergonomic and perfect for lounging. On the decoration front, the design relies on the sculpted curves of the frames and the materials. Saddle leather is heavier and thicker compared to most upholstery leathers, which gives it a strong, commanding look with beautiful patina. The leather is decorated with brass nail head trims, and leather cross stitches that add further personality to these chairs.

    With rich historical influences and organic materials, this pair is an eye-catcher. From the flowing curves expertly carved from solid wood to the patinated leather, these chairs are sure to stand out in any interior. The design combines Indonesian colonial elements with traditional techniques and the result speaks for itself.
