Al Mualim was the leader of the Assassin Order during the crusades and was Altair's mentor. He tasked Altair with retrieving a special artifact from under Soloman's temple. Altair was too arrogant however and botched the mission and was demoted as a result. but the artifact was later recovered by another assassin.
He made Altair assassinate nine Templar leaders to regain his position and weapons. On assassinating the last man Robert de Sable, Richard the Lionheart's lieutenant and Templar leader, it is revealed that Al Mualim is a Templar himself and was having every Templar who knew of the artifact killed.
The artifact is a piece of Eden called the Apple which has the power to subdue minds to the user's will and create illusions. Al Mualim claimed that the Apple was what allowed the miracles in the bible such as turning water into wine to happen because they were merely illusions to fool others. Despite Al Mualim's new power, Altair managed to defeat and kill his mentor.
