INTRODUCTION =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Hello and welcome to my FIFA 2003 FAQ. It has been quite hard to put together a guide for FIFA, as there are no real individual team strategies. However, I've done my best. Here it is... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= III. GAME INFO + CONTROLS =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------- a> Game Information -------------------- Name: FIFA Football 2003 System: PlayStation 2 Memory Space Required: 487KB (Min) No. of Players: 1-8 (With 2 multitaps) No. of Teams: 350+ (Official) No. of Players: 10,000+ No. of Leagues: 16 ------------------ b> Basic Controls ------------------ (X = Cross, O = Circle, S = Square, T = Triangle etc.) Default Configuration: X = Pass/Switch Player O = Shoot/Standard Tackle S = Lob/Aggressive Tackle T = Header/Through Ball L1 = Player Run/Goalkeeper Charge R1 = Sprint (Hold) L Stick = Move R Stick = EA Freestyle (Hard to work) R3 = Not used L3 = Not used R2 = Not used L2 = Not used =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= IV. ADVANCED CONTROLS =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------- a> Free Kicks -------------------- Free kicks in FIFA 2003 are incredibly simple and easy to work, but the finishing result can be amazingly effective. If you're awarded a free kick in a "danger" zone, then you'll notice two things. The first will be a large circle with a power/accuracy meter and another smaller circle inside of that. This is the ball spin option. Use the R Stick to operate the small circle and set the desired curl. The area should flash red once to indicate the kick has potential for a goal. Now, the second thing. The large red circle which will appear on the pitch. Operate it using the L Stick to set where abouts you'd like to shoot. Sorted? Okay, now press the O button. Watch the bar move on the power meter and release square near the white marker to shoot. Good luck! -------------------- b> Corners -------------------- Corners work in an identical way to free-kicks with the L Stick method, and accuracy, however, there is no ball curl options. Aim the kick somewhere into the penalty area, and hope your player gets on the end of it! -------------------- c> Shooting -------------------- At last! A shooting system which is actually effective. Representing the shot system used in the ISS series, it is better than ever before. As you press C, you will notice a pop-up meter next to your player's name. The longer you press it, the harder it shoots, the higher it goes and vica-versa. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= V. POSITION KEY =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= One of the questions I've heard being asked the most: "What do the three letters in Team Management stand for?" They stand for the player's position, and are abbreviations of it. But you don't know what LCDM stands for? No problem. See below: ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* POSITION KEY: GK = Goalkeeper SW = Sweeper RB = Right Back CD = Central Defender LB = Left Back RWB = Right Wing Back LWB = Left Wing Back CDM = Defensive Central Midfield RDM = Defensive Right Midfield LDM = Defensive Left Midfield LCDM = Left Central Defensive Midfield RCDM = Right Central defensive Midfield CAM = Central Attacking Midfield RAM = Right Attacking Midfield RCAM = Right Central Attacking Midfield LCAM = Left Central Attacking Midfield LAM = Left Attacking Midfield CM = Central Midfield RCM = Right Central Midfield LCM = Left Central Midfield RM = Right Midfield LM = Left Midfield RWM = Right Wing/Midfield LWM = Left Wing/Midfield CF = Centre Forward RCF = Right Centre Forward LCF = Left Centre Forward ST = Striker RS = Right Striker LS = Left Striker ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= VI. SETTINGS =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Here is a list of changeable options and what they do: *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Difficulty Level *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Self-explanatory here, adjusts the difficulty.Very easy indeed. When playing on Amateur level, the CPU's tackling, speed, passing and shooting will be impaired. Tips: Just try run straight through defenders from the kick-off. You should score every half-minute on this mode. Used by most players. Slightly harder than Amateur, as the CPU's tackling and speed are much improved. However, shooting and passing are still pretty poor. This is now harder. The skill levels are above average, and you may find this tough. The hardest level to master. All of the skills are tuned up to max, with shooting and speed especially standing out. Near impossible for beginners. *~*~*~*~*~*~* Half Length *~*~*~*~*~*~* Set the time for one half of the game, between a measly 2 minutes to a full 45 minutes. *~*~*~*~* Camera *~*~*~*~* Set the camera angle for matches. Most are annoying, but I personally recommend that you use either Broadcast or Action. As the game would appear on the television was it real. Slightly raised camera. *~*~*~*~*~*~* Game Speed *~*~*~*~*~*~* NOTE: It is advised you do NOT set the speed lower than Normal, otherwise you may experience in-match glitches and bugs. Set the match speed levels of passing and shooting. *~*~*~*~*~* Injuries *~*~*~*~*~* Don't want to lose your hero in an excruciating game? Then turn this off. Want the game to be more realistic, exciting and challenging? Then turn on... *~*~*~* Radar *~*~*~* Choose whether a small map which appears towards the bottom of the screen in a game. Turn On/Off. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* EA Assistant *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Annoying helping system. I suggest turning OFF immediately. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Running Indicators *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Choose whether to have red markers displayed to show the path of a running player off of the ball or not. *~*~*~*~*~* Bookings *~*~*~*~*~* Turn cautions and dismissals on or off. Want to play dirty?! Turn off. Looking for the real thing? Then turn on. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Time/Score Display *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Turn the clock and game score on or off. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Player Status Bar *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* The player status bar shows how tired a player is, his fitness level etc. Turn this display either on or off. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Widescreen *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Should only be turned on if your TV is at least 64" due to the picture. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Vibration *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Turn analogue vibrations on or off. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= VII. TEAM TACTICS =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------- a> Formations -------------------- *~*~*~* 4-4-2 *~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal The traditional 4-4-2 is used by many teams across the globe, from club teams to international teams. However, some clubs elect to detract from the "flat", straight line effect of players and include wingbacks and/or other players who play in different positions, but still keeping the original formation. A great start for beginners who aren't daring, adventurous, or who don't like taking risks... *~*~*~* 4-5-1 *~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal The 4-5-1 should only be used with a team who are full of excellent midfielders who can both play up front with the single striker, but also cover in defence if needed. I suggest using two attacking and two defensive midfielders for maximum success. *~*~*~* 5-3-2 *~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal Probably the best defensive structure on the game. Three defenders, two defensive midfielders, three normal midfielders and two forwards gives a virtual 6 man defence, as well as a great counter attack formation from the goalkeepers. If you're playing a difficult team on World Class, give this formation a try. *~*~*~* 5-4-1 *~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal Sometimes referred to as the "X-Mas Tree 2", this is best used when the match is virtually won. The wingbacks can break up front when needed, leaving the midfield to cover them. This formation can be slid around to have players in slightly different positions. If you're well ahead in the game, why not try this? *~*~*~* 2-5-3 *~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal One definitely for the top class FIFA gamers. Two in defence means you'll be vulnerable to attack for the most part of the match, as the 5 midfielders tend to drift away from the defenders and to the strikers. This means you have virtually 8 men up front, and you'd better be great at tackling to consider this formation. The 2-5-3 is for those of you who shouldn't even need this guide... *~*~*~* 3-5-2 *~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal The five in the middle can cover in defence, yet at the same time teeing up or crossing in many-a-time for the front two. However, as with the 3-4-3, once the opponent slips through, you may be hard pressed. Should only be used with teams that contain reliable, clean defenders. *~*~*~*~*~* 4-1-2-1-2 *~*~*~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal A rare formation that is only just starting to make it in the minnows leagues of major countries. The team tends to moves up and down the field as a unit, and this can be valuable with plenty of options for offload and shooting opportunities, but if one player gives the ball away it may be all over... An interesting formation. Try before you "buy". *~*~*~* 4-3-3 *~*~*~* Playing Style: Normal A semi-pro's answer to 4-4-2, more adventurous and offensive, and more vulnerable at the back. The midfielders should help out more at the back, but it depends on which game you're playing. Hit and miss stuff. An interesting alternative to 4-4-2. -------------------- b> Kick Takers -------------------- Kick takers, you ask? Who are they? Well, the name says it all, these guys are the people who are assigned to take up certain roles during a match. Hit team management, and O twice to view the kick takers page. Here you can assign penalty takers in order from one to five, right corner takers, left corner takers, free kicks and spot kicks. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= VIII. GENERAL STRATEGY GUIDES & FAQs =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------- a> Strategy Guides -------------------- As I have stated previously, as there are no individual team strategies possible to make, I wondered if this guide would ever go ahead. However, after countless hours lost playing, I have managed to make a list of general strategies which can beused to excellent effect. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Goalkeeping *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Never ever try running the entire length of the field with your keeper! He'll most likely make it to the halfway line only to be tackled, therefore losing the ball and your opponent will score shortly after. Use the goalkeeper charge effectively and sparingly. Often you'll have brought the GK out unneccessarily, and leave your opponent to make an easy lob into the net. However, if an opponent is strolling in on goal, make him charge out, often he will challenge the player and win the ball. *~*~*~*~*~*~* Shooting *~*~*~*~*~*~* Long range shots never get you anywhere. Ever. Seriously, unless the keeper's asleep there's no way you're going to score with him in goal. Don't be scared of scoring goals from close-range. A goal is a goal, no matter how ugly it looks. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Defending and Tackling *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Many tackles from behind will go unnoticed, and can be used to change entire matches. If a player is through on goal, don't be scared of lashing out as the referee will only give a penalty about 65% of the time. Complacency is fatal. You could be 2-0 up with two minutes to go, and begin coasting. The other team pushes and pushes foward and gets a goal back. You're so stunned by what's happened you try play the match out by wasting time, making rash challenges. The CPU capitalises, scoring a goal with 10 seconds left. Never assume you've won until the final whistle. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Midfielding *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Try passing around the computer using short, sweet passes rather than mad crosses and risky through-balls. They're better at tackling than you'd imagine. Midfielders are, IMO, the most important players on the pitch. Strikers can score with rubbish shots from two yards out, and defenders have the goalkeeper to back them up if they miss a tackle. The 'fielders however, have no backup plan. A defence will nearly always have their hands busy with their own problems, and if a midfielder loses the ball, then the defenders are between two minds whether to go for the lost ball or the man he's supposed to be marking, often leading to sloppy goals. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Team Management *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Teams often have better players on the subs bench than on the pitch. Make substitutions, but make sure you keep your top goalscorers on the field at all times. Injuries need to be dealt with swiftly and sharply. As soon as you find out a player has been damaged, remove him from the field of play asap. Injured players are almost completely immobile, and sloppy goals can be given away. If playing as a team in which one of the affiliated players is (Giggs, Davids, Carlos), then give them to ball as often as possible. You'll notice that they play a lot better than their attributes suggest. If you have a man sent off, change your formation. Try playing a 5-3-2 defensive structure, and make sure you receive no more cards! Concentrate on defending if you're winning, but if you're losing, you'll have to be prepared to take a few risks... -------------------- b> FAQs -------------------- Here I will include your FAQs... Q/ Are the player names real? A/ The majority of the licenses have been obtained, however some players have accents in their names whereas they don't in real life (e.g. Forl¿n) Q/ Better than Pro Evo 2? A/ That depends on your opinion and your tastes. If you like an arcadey, fast flowing game, then go for PES, if you want the feel of realism, stick with FIFA. Q/ Is the AI still as crap as before? A/ Yes, and no... EA tried their hardest with this, and many aspects have been improved ten-fold, such as the CPU tackling and passing. However, the shooting feature for the computer is pretty poor. Q/ I can edit players, right? A/ Wrong. EA decided to leave out this feature. Q/ My own team? A/ Again no. However, after a few months in season mode you'll porbably be able to buy whoever you want. Q/ Is there any commentary? A/ Of course. John Motson and Ally McCoist provide informative, and sometimes humorous commentary and Sound FX. Q/ What is EA Freestyle? A/ EA Freestyle¿ is a (badly) implemented feature which allows you to perform tricks and skills by tapping the R stick. However, it is very glitchy, and tricks such as the step over can be rarely pulled off. Q/ How do I save/score penalties? A/ With the goalkeeper, tap X and a direction in which you think the ball will go. As a forward, tap O + the direction you'd like to shoot. Q/ What's the difference betweem a spot kick and a penalty? A/ There is no actual difference in the game of football, however in FIFA 2003 a spot kick is a penalty from open play, and a penalty is one from a shootout. This is done so that the Kick Takers file can run correctly. Q/ After completing the season mode, it announced some newly promoted teams. Can I play as them? A/ Unfortunately not... Q/ Who the heck are London? I saw them as a newly promoted team when I beat the English season mode. A/ London are Millwall. For unknown reasons, EA decided to call them London! Q/ I beat the World Tour, but no Unbeatable Challenge! Where is it? A/ The Unbeatable Challenge is a PAL exclusive Ladder-style tournament. Sorry to all you Americans, but it won't be there! :( Q/ How do I obtain match ball? A/ The aim of this guide is not to assist you in finding a rare ball on the game. I will not answer emails about this, as the balls are usually random. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= IX. TOURNAMENTS =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Here I will try to include a comprehensive list of all the tournaments listed in the game, the background information, real-life comparisons and strategies. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Season *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* -------------- A what now?! -------------- A season last for the majority of the year from August to May. Teams participating in the season will all be from one country, and you will play each team twice. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw; with the team with the highest number of points after all the games have been played winning the title. -------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? -------------------------------- The sastifaction of winning... ----------------------- What teams can I use? ----------------------- Any club side in the world. ------------ Strategies ------------ Without doubt, the easiest yet longest mode on the game. It's pretty much everything goes here, as long as you secure the majority of your matches with wins. Don't be too scared of getting the odd man sent off, and try using an attacking formation if you're at full strength and well ahead in the table. Also, this is where you can make your main transfers. Look at the Star Players section for superb buys. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Club Championship *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* --------------- A what now?! --------------- The club championship is a season mode for the elitist teams in the world. Only 18 teams are entered, and the opponents have virtually the same abilities as your own team, making this rather tough. -------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? -------------------------------- The Stade de France Stadium. ------------------------- What teams can I use? ------------------------- You are given a choice of Europe's Top Ten to select from. ------------- Strategies ------------- Just behind the Season mode in terms of easiness and length, it is slightly harder because of the talent of the teams on offer, but as long as you play to the full of your abilities in most matches, you'll have no trouble. Don't be too scared of getting the odd man sent off, and try using an attacking formation if you're at full strength and well ahead in the table. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* EFA Trophy *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ---------------- A what now?! ---------------- Football fans will recognise this as the UEFA Cup from real life. You will face off against some of Europe's top teams in a variety of stages. -------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? -------------------------------- The satisfaction of winning... ------------------------- What teams can I use? ------------------------- Any club team from the game. However, you will be placed against the teams who qualified in real life at the end of the 2002 season. ---------------- Strategies ---------------- The EFA Trophy tourny is one of the trickiest to make a strategy guide for, as the teams you will play are, for some reason, pretty random. You have a few stages to pass through here, and I suggest using the 2-5-3 for the later levels, and the standard 4-4-2 for early games. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* European Champions Cup *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* --------------- A what now?! --------------- Known as the UEFA Champions' League. Accessible to those who are truly the best teams in the world. However, you can enter as any club team you'd like in the game. -------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? -------------------------------- The satisfaction of winning... ------------------------- What teams can I use? ------------------------- Any club side in Europe you wish. However, you will be placed against those who qualified at the end of the 2002 season. -------------- Strategies -------------- Just like the Champion's League, the further you progress, the harder your opponents. use a 4-4-2 to begin with, and either switch to an all-out attack or an all-in defensive structure depending on how easily you defeated the group teams. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* World Tour *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ---------------- A what now?! ---------------- A mini-season where you will tour the globe and play the top teams from all of the leagues featured in the game. --------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? ---------------------------------- The special Unbeatable Challenge mode. --------------------- What teams can I use? --------------------- Any club side on the game. -------------- Strategies -------------- You are going to play A HELL of a lot of games here, so do not be afraid to dock the odd point or two against the harder teams, as it won't really count against you as long as you keep your cool in front of goal. Try experimenting with different partnerships in defence, midfield and up-front early on, anduse the best for the second half of the tour. You'd better make sure you win it though, and complacency will be punished severely. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Regional Challenge *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ---------------- A what now?! ---------------- A tournament in which teams must compete against sides from their own country initially before advancing to face worldwide and intercontinental teams. ----------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? ----------------------------------- The satisfaction of winning. ----------------------- What teams can I use? ----------------------- Any club side from across the globe. -------------- Strategies -------------- Again, A LOT of teams to take on here. I have limited knowledge of this area of the game, however from experience I can definetely advise you to use an _excellent_ club side such as Real Madrid, Juventus etc., and not your own smaller favourite team, as you will most likely blow it in the initial stage. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Ladder Tournament *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ----------------- A what now?! ----------------- A tournament which the Unbeatable Challenge is based on. You must start at the bottom of the ladder, and face random teams. A win will let you move up one place on the ladder, whereas a loss will knock you down. The winning team at the end of the tournament is that on the top rung of the ladder. Virtually you must win all of your games to have a hope of winning. ---------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? ---------------------------------- The satisfaction of winning. ------------------------ What teams can I use? ------------------------ ------------- Strategies ------------- As you're going to have A LOT of games to play, I suggest starting on Amateur or Semi-Pro for the first few games, and make sure you are ready for the trickier teams. Win less than 2-0 and stick with the difficulty level you have chosen throughout the tournament. Possibly even start with a weaker side, because as your team progresses, the more tired and un-fit your players become. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* International Cup *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ----------------- A what now?! ----------------- The FIFA World Cup. Why is it called the International Cup if FIFA hold the license to the official name? Go and ask them yourself. Top teams on the international scene compete against each other in a round robin group stage followed by a KO tournament to decide the world champions! ---------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? ---------------------------------- The Seoul international stadium. ------------------------ What teams can I use? ------------------------ Any internatonal side. ------------- Strategies ------------- The International Cup is one of the easiest modes on the game; therefore the advice I give is simple. DON'T PANIC. Do not make any rash challenges or go out trying to injure yourself or your opposition players, as suspensions and injuries are fatal in the world cup. I know it's basic, but you'd be surprised by the amount of people who panic unnecessarily in a crucial match or moment. Follow those guidelines and you can't really go wrong. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Custom Tournament *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ----------------- A what now?! ----------------- A league style custom tournament where up to 8 user teams can be added. ---------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? ---------------------------------- The satisfaction of winning. ------------------------ What teams can I use? ------------------------ Any team on the game. ------------- Strategies ------------- If you're entering this tournament, you're most likely going to be competing against your mates. Therefore, there isn't really anything I can help you with here, as your human opponents will have a completely different style of play when compared to the CPU. Therefore, I suggest that you at least play a few friendlies beforehand to really get to know their strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you notice they are poor at tackling, exploit this in the tournament whenever you can, possibly having long runs etc. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Unbeatable Challenge *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* --------------- A what now?! --------------- The Unbeatable challenge is very similar to the Ladder Tournament featured in the game (see above), but as far as gamers know, it is only featured in the PAL version of the game. You will play 32 random teams before the tournament ends. ----------------------------------- What do I get for winning this? ----------------------------------- The final Yokohama stadium. ----------------------- What teams can I use? ----------------------- Any club side on the game. -------------- Strategies -------------- As this is the most crucial tournament in the game, if you really want the Yokohama stadium, you can complete this on Amateur relatively easy using any sort of game style. However, if you're really out for a challenge, at least try it on Semi Pro. As you will have 32 matches to compete in overall, I advise using a defensive formation to cut down on the suspensions and injuries of your top players. Make sure your team has at least two goalscorers; if you can't hit the back of the net in this mode then you have no chance of winning. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= XII.
