The AHU coil is one of the most important parts of the air handling units. It is made up of copper tubing of several turns and covered with the fins to increase the heat transfer efficiency of the AHU coil. Direct expansion (DX) coils, most common coil type of AHU, are typically either a slab coil, an A-Coil, or an N-Coil with each coil serving its own purpose for configuration and heat exchange inside the air handler. The type of coil inside the air handler depends on the design requirements of the air handler and what the manufacturer has available for the design requirements. In direct expansion (DX) type of the central air conditioning plants the refrigerant flows though the cooling coil, which also acts as the evaporator of the plant. In case of the chilled water system the chilled water from the chiller flows through the cooling coil. What is important about the coil is the heat exchange ability of the coils.

We provide custom solution for DX type and chilled water coil for your unique business requirements.

An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is used to re-condition and circulate air as part of a HVAC system. The basic function of the AHU is take in outside air, re-condition it and supply it as fresh air to a building. All exhaust air is removed, which creates an acceptable indoor air quality. Depending on the required temperature of the re-conditioned air, the fresh air is either heated by a recovery unit or heating coil, or cooled by a cooling coil.

The AHU is used to control the following parameters of the space:temperature, humidity, air movement and air cleanliness. The temperature is controlled by AHU coil within the air handling unit air stream, such coils may be direct or indirect in relation to the medium providing the heating or cooling effect. If dehumidification is required, then the cooling coil is employed to over-cool so that the dew point is reached and condensation occurs.

The air handler coil should be checked for dirt and debris which may have been sucked into the air handler inadvertently. Some air handlers have the filters inside them before the coil.Any dirt or debris on the coil should be removed immediately as these things will impede airflow through the air handler and throughout the entire system as a whole. Aluminum fins is a great filter and it is a dust collector too. Aluminum fins do approximately 70% of the heat transfer than copper tube’s 30%. Regular maintenance and cleaning is the best way to maintain heat exchanger efficiency.
