LONDON – All four members of rock band Queen were honored Tuesday as BMI Icons at the U.S. performing right organization’s annual London Awards.
The ceremony toasts European and Asian songwriters, composers and music publishers for performances on American radio and television.
Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor were on hand fresh from an appearance Monday night at London’s Groucho Club where they launched a posh coffee table book called “40 Years of Queen.”
The band’s other honorees were vocalist Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991, and bassist John Deacon, who retired in the 1990s. Queen joins previous BMI Icons including Donovan, Peter Gabriel, Don Black, Bryan Ferry, Ray Davies and Van Morrison.
Other records lauded at the black-tie event at the Dorchester Hotel on London’s Park Lane included Irish band The Script’s “Breakeven,” which won the BMI Robert S. Musel Award for Song of the Year. Andrew Frampton (PRS) and band members Daniel O’Donoghue (PRS/IMRO) and Mark Sheehan (PRS/IMRO) co-wrote the song, which was published by BMG Chrysalis (PRS).
The College Song of the Year prize went to Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart,” co-written by Fraser T. Smith and published by BMG Chrysalis (PRS), and Dance Song of the Year was club hit “Stereo Love,” written and recorded by Romanian musician Edward Maya (PRS/UCMR-ADA) and Vika Jigulina (PRS), and published by Media Services International (UCMR-ADA).
