"Afford" is like having just enough money in your pocket, bank account, or piggy bank to buy what you want or need and still have some left without breaking your budget.

How to sign "afford" in American Sign Language (ASL)?
Meaning: afford as in having the financial capability to buy something.
Pronunciation (sign description): Tip of dominant-handed forefinger taps twice on non-dominant palm-up/sided palm of flat hand.
Learner tip: Be aware of this similar sign with OWE. The difference between AFFORD and OWE lie in intonation and NMS (i.e. facial grammar and intonation).
Context or usage examples: "can't afford this college tuition".

ASL has its own grammar and structure in sentences that works differently from English. For plurals, verb inflections, word order, etc., learn grammar in the "ASL Learn" section. For search in the dictionary, use the present-time verbs and base words. If you look for "said", look up the word "say". Likewise, if you look for an adjective word, try the noun or vice versa. E.g. The ASL signs for French and France are the same. If you look for a plural word, use a singular word.
