Desprender conjugation

Desprender conjugation - to release

Table of Contents

Desprender is a Spanish verb which translates into English as “to release, let loose, give away”.

Below are all of the conjugations for desprender in Spanish, in all three moods (indicative/indicativo, subjunctive/subjunctivo and imperative/imperativo) and all of the tenses, for each pronoun.

The vosotros pronoun is mainly used in mainland Spain, and is the informal second-person plural – it could be considered the Spanish version of “y’all”. It is rarely found in Latin America, where ustedes is used instead.

The vos form is used instead of tú in some Spanish speaking countries of South America, especially the Southern Cone (e.g. Argentina and Uruguay) and has a different conjugation.

Desprender Infinitive

English Infinitive to release, let loose, give away
Spanish Infinitive desprender

Desprender Gerund and Past Participle

The gerund (gerundio) is used with the continuous tenses, e.g. present continuous (está desprendiendo) and past continuous (estaba desprendiendo). The easiest way to think of it is the equivalent of english’s -ing form (e.g. releasing).

The past participle (participio) is used with perfect tense ‘haber’ verbs, e.g. he desprendido and hubiera desprendido. These are the equivalent of English’s ‘have’ (e.g. have released).

Gerundio / Gerund  desprendiendo
Participio / Past Participle  desprendido

Desprender Indicative Conjugations

The basic form of speech, el indicativo is used for making statements, talking about facts, events and things that are certain and objective.

Desprender Presente / Present

The present tense is as it sounds – it’s for talking about things that are currently going on, which are habitual, or which generally exist. In English, this would be “I release” or “they release”.

Pronoun Spanish
Yo desprendo
desprendes
Él / Ella / Usted desprende
Nosotros / as desprendemos
Vosotros / as desprendéis
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desprenden
Vos desprendés

Desprender Preterite / Pretérito Indefinido

Your simple past tense, e.g. “I released” or “she released” in English.

In Spanish, there are two past tenses where just one is used in English; the pretérite infefinido is typically used to refer to a concrete, specific moment in time.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo desprendí I released
desprendiste You released
Él / Ella / Usted desprendió He / she / you released
Nosotros / as desprendimos We released
Vosotros / as desprendisteis You released
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desprendieron They / you released
Vos desprendiste You released

Desprender Imperfect / Pretérito Imperfecto

The pretérito imperfecto roughly translates as “I was releasing” or “she was releasing” in English, and is typically used to describe things and set a scene, talk about events without a specific timeframe, or talk about habitual events or states in the past.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo desprendía I was releasing
desprendías You were releasing
Él / Ella / Usted desprendía He was / she was / you were releasing
Nosotros / as desprendíamos We were releasing
Vosotros / as desprendíais You were releasing
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desprendían They / you were releasing
Vos desprendías You were releasing

Desprender Perfect / Perfecto

The perfect tense is for talking about things which happened in the past but are still related to the present or continue into the present.

In English, these use the auxiliary verbs ‘have’ and ‘has’ – i.e. “I have released” and “she has released”.

Pronoun Spanish English
Yo he desprendido I have released
has desprendido You have released
Él / Ella / Usted ha desprendido He has / she has / you have released
Nosotros / as hemos desprendido We have released
Vosotros / as habéis desprendido You have released
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes han desprendido They / you have released
Vos has desprendido You have released

Desprender Conditional / Condicional

The conditional is used in place of the English modal verb “would”, i.e. “I would release” or “she would release”. It can be used to talk about hypothetical situations.

Pronoun Spanish Englush
Yo desprendería I would release
desprenderías You would release
Él / Ella / Usted desprendería He / she / you would release
Nosotros / as desprenderíamos We would release
Vosotros / as desprenderíais You would release
Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes desprenderían They / you would release
Vos desprenderías You would release

Desprender Future / Futuro

The future tense, simply put, replaces the English modal verb “will” – i.e. “I will release” or “they will release”.

It is more commonly used for making a hypothesis about the present. To talk about the future, Spanish speakers frequently use “ir + a + infinivo”, e.g. “van a desprender” means “They are going to release”.

Yo desprenderé I will release
desprenderás You will release
Él / Ella / Usted desprenderá He / she / you will release
Nosotros / as desprenderemos We will release
