Mary Winter died quietly on March 30, 2013 in Ames, Iowa. She was born April 18, 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mary received her elementary education from the public schools in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and graduate degrees from the Pennsylvania State University. Between her bachelor's and master's degrees she worked as a home economist in Minnesota. After graduate work she worked as a professor at Cornell University and at Iowa State University.

She became famous as a teacher and a researcher in the field of household resource management. She was appointed Associate Dean of her college in charge of Research Administration. She retired as Emeritus Professor from Iowa State Universuty in 2005.

Because of her university roles and her natural gregariousness she was known to have a friend every thirty miles along the U.S. highways in the middle-west and maybe the whole country. She is survived by her husband, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews and four stepchildren. A secular celebration of her life will be held in her barn at 17830 550th Avenue, Ames, Iowa 50010 at eleven AM April 5, 2013. There will be food, music, and conversation.

CandleEarl, I have sung "Happy Birthday" to Mary for many years and this year, for some reason, I went on Google & was sad to see that she had died. My family will all be sad as we all loved Mary. I know last I called her, her cancer was back. My sympathy & I hope you are well. My e mail address is altam@arvig.net

Mary was such a wonderful person - caring, enthusiastic, and helpful. We will hold her in our hearts and enjoy such fond memories of her. It is so hard to believe she has passed. We will miss her so much.

Mary was generous with her hospitality, words of encouragement and sharing her knowledge of combined event pony driving. I think she has more true friends than anybody else that I have ever met.

CandleMary was such a lovely person. I have had the pleasure to get to know her better over the last few years. We shared a love for horses and great conversation. I enjoyed Mary's sense of humor, her out look on life and people. She will be missed.

CandleLike many, I knew Mary though carriage driving. She was always willing to help and to share her knowledge. She was always a good sport, win or loose (she often won). A true role model for us all to follow. You will be greatly missed by many Mary. A life well lived.

Mary was a wonderful person and a fabulous carriage driver. She inspired me to learn more and work harder to improve my skills. Whenever we attended the SRDT - she (and family members) always made us feel so very welcome. We have many fond memories of Mary.

Mary was a wonderful horse person and I have many fond memories of her from the years she was envolved with driving. She had a great, energetic, spirit. My thoughts are with Earl and the rest of her family.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Mary is her smile and that wonderful laugh, the welcome feeling she emitted no matter who she was around, the great hugs and always the knitting in her hands, her enthusiasm no matter what she was doing, her love for her family which included Jada, Matt and the children, the pure joy she got playing games with Molly and xavier.
I loved her like a sister and will miss her so, but am very grateful that she was taken home before suffering to much
