Alien Huntress #5

Ecstasy in Darkness

Rate this book
Growing up poor on New Chicago’s meanest streets, Ava Sans had two options: be the predator or be the prey. No contest. Now, working for Alien Investigation and Removal, she’s been ordered to capture the biggest, baddest warrior of all—a vampire too beautiful to be real, with the ability to manipulate time. Once the leader of the entire vampire army, McKell has been deemed savage and unstable, spurned even by his own kind.

To McKell, humans should be nothing more than sustenance. Yet the petite, golden-skinned Ava is a fascinating contradiction—vicious yet witty, strong yet vulnerable, lethal but fiercely loyal. Against his better judgment, McKell craves that loyalty, and much more. When the chase leads to seduction, McKell and Ava will race to discover the truth about his past. But the answers will come at a price, even for a woman who thought she had nothing left to lose. . . .

Ecstasy in Darkness by Gena Showalter
Alien Huntress series book 5. Paranormal dark romance. Best read as part of the series.
Ava and McKell are enemies that soon turn into lovers.
Their interactions were often filled with humor even though the story itself is on the dark side with otherworldly political issue, and a killing virus.. This story also gets quite steamy.

Gripping and essential for series followers.

God hadn’t just been on his A game when he created this being. He’d decided to enter a new league. Rough, raspy, and purring, McKell’s voice was like hot butterscotch poured over—hmm, butterscotch.

Ava is a fantastic heroine and I adored her! She’s violent, tough, argumentative, feisty and contrary. And her loyalty to her best and only friend Noelle was AMAZING. Ava is the kind of person I would LOVE to be friends with. She hasn’t had an easy life, but she’s a fighter and isn’t intimidated by anyone. And the fact that she stabbed and stunned McKell was hilarious :-D

Why did she entice him so intently? She was beautiful, yes, but other women were more so. At least, he was certain someone out there was, though he had yet to meet her. And why did his mouth continue to water for Ava, even though he wasn’t legitimately hungry?

Now I love a bad boy just like most women and a guy who wears the finger bones of his enemies around his neck screams bad boy to me ;-) So of course I loved the dangerous vampire McKell. Sure he’s a bit arrogant, but confidence is sexy and I loved how obsessed and possessive he was over Ava.

“You don’t really like to be treated like a lady, right? Please tell me you don’t.” She’d told Noelle she was a fragile flower.
“I don’t. Treat me bad. Real bad.”

Things definitely starts off very interesting for Ava and McKell seeing as Ava and her best friend Noelle, had been tasked to capture McKell and bring him back to their A.I.R. headquarters. This leads to a lot of hilarious moments, seeing as Ava and Noelle knows just how to get a man’s attention and with McKell having the ability to manipulate time and refusing to let humans get the better of him it was very entertaining to see them try to get the upper-hand. I loved that both Ava and McKell was instantly attracted to each other and I really enjoyed their banter and watching them fall for each other. I loved seeing McKell realise just how special Ava really was, especially since in the beginning he looked down on all humans. And seeing how he devoted he became to her was so romantic. And the sexy times were SCORCHING which was awesome ;-)

The plot continues to be very gripping with the Schön queen finally arriving on Earth and setting her sights on Dallas, the second in command at A.I.R. and them trying to find a way to kill her without spilling blood.

Ecstasy in Darkness is definitely my favorite so far in this fantastic PNR series and I can’t wait to read Noelle’s book next. I loved every moment of this book and had so much fun reading it. Highly recommended.

***maybe some spoilers***

I haven't read an Alien Huntress book since, well since the last one. (lol, no really, though it's been since Bride's book came out, so a while now).

I was soo excited to get back into this world!

I read the story in Deep Kiss of Winter as my intro to the AH world, and I really liked it, so I borrowed the first couple from a friend and found out I REALLY liked the series. When I saw this one at the store, I went nuts, seriously jumping up and down and making a complete ass out of myself at Target, which fully sucks since I'm there all the time...my 5 yr old told me to "Calm down," lol. (btw, I'm not kidding)

And now, what I loved about McKell this book:

I loved how this story dealt with two trainees who are girlie girls, BUT know how to kick ass. The opening scene in this book is now on of my all-time favorites. They are sent after McKell, the vampire from Bride's book who was exiled for not killing her as a child. He is vicious, ruthless, and has the manners of a man from the Regency Era. He was fabulous.

McKell can stop time, so when the AIR trainees kiss (yep, fake lezzie kiss gets 'em every time!) Ava stuns him. So McKell, powerful as he is, stops time, and waits for the stun to wear off-then he strips the girls and leaves them in their bras and panties in the middle of the park! I was cracking up throughout this book. Here's a quick example:

"he'd sent all three agents back with severe blood loss, missing fingers, and brain damage. Fine. The agents had been brain damaged before encountering McKell, but then, weren't all men? Exhibit A: Dallas."

Ava is the agent-in-training who is put in charge of McKell, and those two are quite the smexy pair-I love McKell, I love that he carries a whip, I love that he wears a necklace made of agents' fingerbones, and I love that he is constantly thrown off guard by Ava. And I especially loved how her bff Noelle kept calling him to annoy him just cuz she could.

Ava and McKell kept the sparks flying throughout the whole book, and at the end, when the big bad thing happens...I loved McKell for his sacrifice, for his love of Ava, and for his orders to Noelle to buy Ava a huge butterscotch latte.

And anyone reading this, I call DIBS on McKell!

I feel like I keep repeating myself lately but Gena Showalter, or Showhunter as I like to call her, is the bomb diggity. She never disappoints, she's amazing (or Showaltery, as I also like to say), my life would be so sad without her and her troupe of hot, sexy, brooding, alpha males in it.

ECSTASY IN DARKNESS was such a great book. I adore the ALIEN HUNTRESS series, one of my favorite series ever for sure. I love reading about this universe Gena created, the characters are all great and funny and each book is connected yet has its own storyline and it is never boring nor repetitive.

ECSTASY IN DARKNESS is the story of McKell (the sexy, brooding, macho vampire who was supposed to be with Bride in SEDUCE THE DARKNESS) and Ava whom we meet in this book.

I loved McKell in the previous book and I loved him even more in this one. What a beautiful, arrogant bastard he is! I love how he took everything literally, how superior he thought he was, how he was so confident in himself, it was refreshing. The guy was worse than Devyn and Devyn was awfully sure of himself. However, I loved seeing another side of him as well, how he was with Ava, him realizing that love is a powerful thing and that he would do absolutely anything for her, even dying. McKell did everything fully, with all his heart and I loved that about him.
"He had just meant to kiss her. To soften her. To begin her seduction, their romance, their life."
Ava is introduced in this book, I didn't know what to expect about her but I was not disappointed. That girl is something else. She's still an agent in training with AIR and she works with her best friend and partner in crime, Noelle. As much as I loved Ava she still annoyed me at times. She's very sure of herself in her own way as well, she's not afraid to fight, she's very loyal, smart but then she could be very stubborn, acting stupid and it was infuriating.
"Maybe, since vampires seemed to live forever, he'd been on earth during the human/alien war some eighty years ago and had come into contact with some kind of nuclear ... something. Because damn. He was huge."
I loved them together though. They really did complete one another. As usual with Gena the relationship building was perfect if a bit slow. They're both attracted to each other but McKell views humans as inferior and Ava doesn't want a relationship with him at all. It all felt right with them, I had to wait until 77% for the first actual sex scene but it was so worth it guys! So so so so worth it...! The sexual tension was there and I was really happy when they finally did it. Like, really happy. Heh. On a more serious note, I loved how vulnerable they made each other, the love they had for one another was beautiful and I loved it.
"She took, she gave, she conquered. Ultimately, she submitted."
The secondary characters were amazeballs. No surprise there. Mia did annoy me a bit though. But I can't wait to read Noelle and Hector's story, I'm a little apprehensive because Noelle was quite childish in this book and I'm afraid of not liking her...but well, we'll see! Dallas was a very important part of the story and I hope he'll get his own book one day. We also get to see more of Devyn and Bride, my #1 couple. Oh and the newly vampire-dog, Hellina.
"The True Story of Hellina Tremain-McKell, How I Became a Real Vampire."
Like I said, the storyline is connected to the previous books. With the Schon queen being here and wanting Dallas and basically wanting to infect the world, yay. The last 20% of the book were stressful, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen. Gena amazed me! I was really not expecting the ending, it was well done and I'm super curious to see what's going to happen next. Although, I found the very end a bit rushed.

Once again, Gena-I-can-write-anything-I-m-so-good-at-my-job-Showalter wrote an amazing book with a badass couple and made me crave the next installment!

Fun. I liked McKell and is boundless ego. Ava was a good opposite for him, although, I agre e with other reviewers that her insecurities got old. I skimmed/skipped the areas where it was all her in her head, going over her insecurities.

I don’t always like a continuous villain, but the Schön Queen is interesting and I do like the new developments.

Ava Sans is an agent in training for AIR--Alien Investigation and Removal--and in order to test her skills and move her to the next level, she and her best friend, and fellow agent in training, Noelle Tremain, are sent on an impossible mission: Bring the vampire Victor McKell into AIR Headquarters. Confident in their skill, the girls go out to retrieve McKell. And they do end up stunning him. However, they seem to forget his power of time manipulation. In retaliation, McKell stips them down to their bras and panties and rips up their cars. The next day, they go back to try and get McKell again. And to get a blood sample. Well, they get the blood but they don't get him.

Not very long later, though, McKell shows up at Ava's apartment, demanding she sow up his wound because, for some reason, he is not healing with supernatural speed. Add that to the fact that he keeps throwing up the blood of everyone he drinks, and they soon realize that Ava is McKell's mate. The two end up making a bargain: in return for McKell agreeing to talk to Mia at AIR, Ava would help McKell catch some vampires so he can learn how to walk in the sun.

It started out as just a deal but the two quickly start to like and have fun with each other. They also help each other, namely McKell helping Ava and AIR with hunting the Schön queen who has appeared to Dallas two more times. As they become closer, Ava and McKell are forced to face their desire for each other, but it never gets far enough to satisfy. Until one day, when McKell finds Ava bleeding to death and trying to fight off vampires with Noelle. Knowing he can't give Ava his blood, because that would marry them without her consent but would also turn her into a vampire (a new discover they've made), he calls Bride Targon to heal Ava. Afterwards, when Ava is fully healed, the two finally give into their passion for each other.

Also, in order to make good on their deal, McKell goes with Ava the next day to AIR Headquarters, where Johnny, who has been infected by the Schön queen, is given some of McKell's blood, and Mia enlists McKell's help in hunting the queen and offers him a spot on her team at AIR when everything was done. Finally, Ava and Noelle are made full agents and placed on Mia's team because they've done the impossible: They got McKell to come to AIR and talk to Mia. That done, McKell, Ava, Noelle, and their new trainees go out to hunt the queen. McKell follows her by sense of smell and realizes she's been visiting the homes of all the couples within AIR and, more specifically, within Mia and Dallas' team. Last stop is McKell and Ava's home and the queen is still there. A fight eventually breaks out and one of the team is infected. They are all quarantined but McKell and Ava are placed together; during which time they are finally able to admit their true feelings for each other, admit their love. Then they are faced with a gruesome reality: Ava was the one infected.

In a state of panic, and not wanting to turn Ava before she was ready, McKell forces him to reverse time. Doing that, he tries to prevent Ava's infection. Instead of listening to him, Ava follows McKell and he is forced to take drastic measures; he pushes himself, the queen, and some of her guards through one of the dreaded doorways that had been constantly plaguing him. Once inside, he meets his father, his real father, and is confronted with the reality that some of what he's always know was a lie. Refusing to release him, however, McKell's father makes him promise to spend six months with him in return for removing the Schon from earth. For Ava's protection, he agrees.

Three earth days later, Ava continues to dwell in her misery at the loss of McKell. She knows he didn't want to leave her but that doesn't stop her heart from breaking. When she first hears his voice, she thinks she is hallucinating. However, she quickly realizes that McKell is really back. He tells her about what happened, about how he spent two weeks with his father before the man got sick of his whining about missing Ava, about how much he loves her. Together again, Ava is still not yet ready to be turned McKell accepts that and they spend the rest of their day showing each other just how much they love each other....

Okay. So. I've been waiting for this book, anticipating this book, ever since I finished Seduce the Darkness. While I knew no one could hold a candle to my Devyn, I was thoroughly convinced that I would be utterly enthralled with McKell because I already loved him and his badassness from STD. I didn't know about Ava, though, so I was pleasantly surprised by her. What I loved most about their relationship was that they could be utterly antagonistic towards each other one minute and completely sweet and loving the next. And, when I say antagonistic, I definitely mean it; sometimes I think they were more antagonistic of each other than all the other Alien Huntress couples combined. Now, who wouldn't love that?

Victor McKell, vampire warrior, is definitely a man worthy of calling "dibs" on. If Devyn wasn't already my favorite of this series, I know McKell would be able to fill that spot. He is completely and utterly alpha male. He's intense, arrogant, sweet, understanding (sometimes), and jealous. I have to say, I really loved his jealousy, especially when he kept stopping time to repeatedly punch Johnny in the face. What I love most of all, though, is that change McKell went through. He went from the arrogant, you-are-inferior-to-me-because-you-are-a-lowly-human mentality to someone who was able to love and care for others; he was able to see Ava as a person, someone he could love, instead of just food.

I really loved Ava, even if she did drive me insane sometimes. My favorite thing about her was probably that she felt real to me; her relationship with Noelle (the constant playful insults) felt real and reminded me of some of my relationships, reminded me of that freedom you feel when you are with someone you completely and utterly trust. Likewise, I loved her volatile and aggressive nature because it was just her and she wasn't afraid to be herself, in all her violent glory. As with McKell, though, I loved watching Ava transform. She went from a girl who didn't trust anyone, especially men, but her best friend to a woman who was able to let herself love and care for another person. And that transformation in and of itself was beautiful.

Noelle was quite the interesting character and she constantly had me laughing. I liked, too, the way Gena Showalter thoroughly introduced her into the series, not only as Ava's best friend, an AIR agent, and Jaxon Tremain's cousin, but as a character with potential. Because of that (along with the fact that I worship Gena's writing), I absolutely cannot wait to read Noelle's book. Oh! And to see how Hector and Dallas deal with sleeping with her, since both those visions of Dallas' were unchangeable.

As always I adored seeing more of the gorgeous Dallas. I loved getting to see more of him because he is one of my favorite characters, has been since I started the series with Awaken Me Darkly. I'm very interested in his visions and how he is learning to deal with is newfound Arcadian powers and being Kyrin's "blood slave." The only thing that frustrates me is his dealings with the Schön queen. It drives me crazy that, although he knows she's deadly and he'd never sleep with her, that he finds her attractive. Dal, you can do so much better, baby!

Now, to end this review, I just want to talk briefly on one of my favorite parts of this book: How about when McKell was bossing Devyn around, huh? That was hilarious and Dev being Dev of course huffed and puffed and complained the whole time he complied with McKell's demands. Dev, Dev, Dev, you adorable thing, I loved laughing at you and your reaction!

This book was absolutely hilarious. I giggled so many times while reading that my husband started giving me odd looks. The funniest parts usually revolved around Ava and Noelle and involved them sniping at each other. They were the type of best friends that seemed like blood enemies to the casual observer. Poor McKell made the mistake of trying to insert himself into that situation, not realizing that just because they can criticize each other doesn’t mean that they’ll let anyone else do it too.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book. Ava was a complete unknown and the thought of McKell still being hung up on Bride made me nervous. I was pleased to see that Ava and McKell fit together nicely. He has some issues to work through—like being convinced of his superiority to humans—but he’s a nice match for Ava. How can he not be perfect for her when he’s cocky enough to wear a trophy necklace of all the fingers he’s taken?

We get to see a continuation of the Schon storyline and further details on the queen. I’m really curious to see if the author is actually going to pair Dallas with her because the thought of that kind of grosses me out. Many prior characters pop up here, but because this one revolved more around AIR their presence makes sense and feels natural to the storyline. We also got a nice look at the newest AIR recruits and some exciting hints about Noelle and Hector’s future together. I’m really anxious for their book and the opportunity to learn more about Hector. I’m nervous about what Dallas’s vision will mean for their relationship development, though, and wish I had the book to find out now.

I found Ava’s irritation about being short hilarious. As a fellow short person, I can certainly empathize with her irritation. Her temper and her desire to avoid feelings and mushy scenes made her fun to read about. She fit well with McKell who was impossibly arrogant and possessive. He thought he was the baddest guy on the block and was decidedly not thrilled to be taken down by two agents-in-training. I loved watching the big, bad McKell slowly fall in love.

The action is fast and the characters are over the top, but that is where this author shines. Ava and McKell have loads of sexual tension and easily bounce between sweet and sparring. It seems like their relationship works well with both attitudes. Plus all that sniping just cranks up the heat. ;) I really enjoyed this read and think that if you’re a fan of the humor in Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series, especially the valkyries, then you’ll enjoy this one too.

The only thing I didn’t like about this book was how the end unfolded. I thought the development with McKell’s family member seemed pretty convenient and random. It cast a pall on the ending but not enough to impact my grade too much. I’m still really excited to read Noelle’s book. If it’s anything like this one, it’s going to be a riot.

Favorite Quote:
"Want me to stay and read you a bedtime story?" Devyn asked. "Or I can share the painkillers I took from that nurse. You know, the one who has your flowers." He reached in his pocket and withdrew a handful of white pills.

"I thought you said you gave her the flowers because she looked sad."

"She did look sad. After she realized someone had stolen all her drugs."

For all I love AIR, I love these characters, this is my favourite book - my new favourite character is Hellina - and what a character this one is... Can't say who or what Hellina is but when you find out you will totally agree that Hellina is off the charts!!!

Love this book beyond a passion, I can't imagine the next one will even compare!!!!

Ladies, it's official! I am now a huge fan of the Alien Huntress series and I can actually say I like it better than Lords of the Underworld. *cue gasps*

I love the novelty of this paranormal world. There's aliens, of all types, and some sort of an alien invasion that the AIR agents are dealing with, by a particular alien species called Schon. They are sex aliens, basically succubi/incubi that need sex to survive, but when they have sex they infect the person with some sort of flesh eating, mortal disease. AIR has been fighting them since book 3, and now that the Schon Queen has finally arrived they have to stop her at any cost.

The usual suspects are here, mainly Mia from book 1, who has a bit more of a role in this investigation, Dallas, one of my crushes, the human who has alien abilities after drinking some of Kyrin's blood, Bride and Devyn, ohhhh Devyn, can I keep him? Like, maybe... tied to my bed and at my total mercy? Sorry got distracted. Where was I?

I was not familiar with the heroine, Ava, human, but apparently she's an AIR trainee, along with her best friend Noelle, human, Jaxon's cousin. These two are a riot! I love their friendship and their banter and I can't wait for Noelle's book next. The hero however, we met briefly in book 4. Gorgeous, tough, and brooding vampire Victor McKell. He has now been kicked out of the underworld where vampires live, and has to learn how to live topside. Except he wasn't expecting to mate Ava, a human of all people!

While figuring out a way to seduce her and keep her, McKell helps AIR in the investigation and hopefully aprehension of the Schon Queen. And he manages to turn a dog into a vampire. Yep, I've seen it all, a vampire-dog.

And let me go back to Dallas. Ahhh yes. Dallas has some sort of a connection to the Schon Queen, apart from his desire for her, which he can't seem to control. But will he be able to resist her? And will he be able to stop the events he forsees in his vision, which might ruin his friendship with Hector? Hector... sexy, tattoed, "special-hands/magic-fist" AIR agent, who has a crush on Noelle.

The only thing missing... I could've definitively used some more "sexy time" between Ava and McKell.  Even though they had a lot of smoking hot almost moments, I can't give this book the hotness award!

If you haven't read the Alien Huntress series, START NOW! You don't know what you're missing. Even after a "rough-start" with book 1, these books DO get better as the series goes along. They're sexy, full of humor, with enough action and intrigue to keep you on your toes, a great supporting cast, drool-worthy heroes, VERY likeable heroines, and a fun take on aliens. READ THEM NOW!

Favorite Quotes:

"He came to me, so I don't have to wash a goddamn thing," she called, knowing Noelle was long gone.
"Still talking," McKell shouted from the bedroom.
"Still annoying me," she shouted back. - McKell and Ava

"So you weren't wanting the aid of another man?"
"No." She could barely handle McKell.
"Then I won't spank you."
McKell... spanking her... Someone get this man a paddle. - McKell and Ava

"Your franctic call dragged me out of bed, and I'm thirsty. So. . . Dallas. Beer? Blink once if the answer's yes." - Hector

"One day, Dear John, you're going to wake up, and your penis is going to be resting on the pillow next to you. Not that you'd notice its absence, small as it is." - Noelle

"Be a good boy and fetch me another drink."
"Darling, I can't. You know how jealous you get when every woman in the room watches my ass as I walk away from you. So, really, by refusing to help you, I'm doing you a favor." - Devyn and Bride

Gena Showalter’s Ecstasy in Darkness rates high on both the smut and the paranormal charts… which is a win-win for me. It’s book 5 (or 7 if you count the two YA stories) in the Alien Huntress Series. And it features vampire badass McKell, who we met in the last book Seduce the Darkness. He is still pretty bummed out about losing his fated Bride and is now facing life exiled from his people. His heroine, the young Ava, is an agent in training for the Alien Investigation Removal (AIR) agency and is tasked to bring him in.

Ava has lived a hard life and has never had anyone she could trust besides her good friend Noelle. They’re trying to become AIR agents. The head of the agency, Mia Snow, has decided to let them prove their worth by ordering them to bring in McKell for questioning.

Of course, McKell is opposed to the idea, but the girls use their feminine wiles to distract him enough to almost catch him. He uses his powers to get away and quickly becomes infatuated with Ava. In fact, his body recognizes her as his mate and as a result, he can only drink from her from that moment on. The cat-and-mouse game between them is short-lived and before you know it, Ava and McKell are making out. It takes awhile before they do the deed, but in their defense, they have three big roadblocks:
1. Ava’s serious abandonment issues
2. McKell’s vampire superiority complex
3. The evil alien queen trying to turn everyone into sex-crazed cannibals (a story way too complicated too truly explain here.)

Obviously, they get together eventually, but the tension is fun along the way.

As always, Gene Showalter delivers in the smut department. The sexual tension and follow-through is through the roof. I love that she continues to incorporate familiar characters as she continues her world building throughout the series. She doesn’t waste time expounding on things I’m not interested in. The plot moves fast and there’s no point in the book that you’d want to put it down.

Loved this book. It’s not deep, but it’s fast and fun. 5 stars.

First Thought
Gena Showalter continues to entertain me with her sexy aliens.
the writing
I love that Showalter throws in a few hits at Kresley Cole's IAD series in Ecstasy in Darkness . She also did it in the previous novella, Tempt Me Eternally .  But it's even more fitting this time around since the heroine, Ava and her BFF Noelle act much like Cole's Valkyries. Showalter's writing is well around with action sequences to go with her sexy charged romp scenes. She also brings humor and snark to the table as well.
the world
I love the world in the Alien Huntress series. Showalter explains that all the supes in this world are actually aliens from different worlds and dimensions. There's some new (at least to me) supes and it brings a refreshing feel to this paranormal romance series.
the romance
This time around we have a vampire male and a human female.  McKell reminds me a little of Lothaire from Cole's IAD series in that he believes (like much of his race) that humans are food and nothing more. They are below him and dare his fated female be a lowly human.

Ava is an agent in training with AIR. The AIR is the is Alien Investigation and Removal mostly run by humans to keep the dangerous otherworlders (aliens/supes) in line. Ava has so many chips on her shoulder and one being that she made the mistake of sleeping with a follow trainee that had a big mouth about their one night together. Ava doesn't want to be known as "that agent" that sleeps around with her co-workers and for sure not the one that sleeps with her targets.

McKell and Ava has tons of issues to work through to get their HEA. But Showalter wrote their ride well and Eyre brought it to life marvelously.
the narration
I don't know what else I can say about Justin Eyre. She totally nails this series and the characters. She does a wide range of accents (very well). She makes me feel like I'm listening to more than one narrator. Her voices for previous characters are exactly as they were in their own book and yet she manages to make the "new" character distinct from older characters.

Final Thought
I'm sad that the ride is almost over.

If you're going to have a sexy man on the cover with a whip, he better use it in the damn book. McKell seemed sexy, smart, and powerful, yet at times I felt like he was a complete idiot for all that he put up with in regards to Ava.

Ava Shot McKell and stunned him twice and he does nothing about it. In addition, she was a complete bitch to him for about 80% of the book. There was barely any sex in the book and I don't even feel like there was a growing relationship with the two main characters either.

Ava and Noelle were completely stupid throughout most of the book. The fact that they were arrogant enough to believe that they could catch McKell was beyond me. Also, the way Mia was acting like she was so in charge of everything and everyone killed me too. She had the audacity to believe that she could trap McKell and make him do things on her terms when he could STOP TIME. I'm pretty sure he could have just killed everyone in AIR at any moment yet he didn't. I kind of wish he had just to shut Mia up. Who is she to command him?

The last thing I need to vent about is Mia. Even though she hasn't been the main character since book 1, she continues to be a complete bitch and ass hole. In book 1, I thought she was okay. I didn't think she was that smart to go up against an ancient alien whom she had no chance of winning against, but hey, she wasn't so bad. It's good to be confident but not arrogant (unless you where that well). As this series has continued, she seems to appeal to me less and less. First is the way she treats her friend, Dallas. It's like she doesn't care at all about what's happened to him. When they first found out about her connection to Mia's man, she could have given him time to work out his new reality but no, she's in his face and so is her man. I pretty much only semi liked either of them in the first book. I feel like Dallas would have been better off if she'd let him die. But since he's alive, he's got these new powers to deal with, people treating him differently, an evil sick alien queen after him, and these ass holes for friends.

This was my first book in the Alien Huntress series, and I have to say I was so pleased I wasn't lost. It was a wonderful treat for me. A strong, sexy Alpha hero who wants the strong, independent heroine with every bone in his body. While not knowing where things are going with them takes this book on a joyride. To top it all off , the love scenes were so steamy.

Ava Sans and Noelle Tremain are the best of friends who are trying to move up in the ranks of Alien Investigation Removal (AIR). Finally they are called in to take down the one and only Victor McKell. They think McKell is unstable and psychotic. Now the question is, are these two trainees ready to take down the former leader of a vampire army?

Ava ends up teasing and taunting McKell and boy is she surprised when he arrives on her doorstep and wants to help Ava and AIR apprehend the alien queen who is running around passing along a disease and causes the infected to crave eating flesh. Getting a taste of Ava's blood wasn't part of the plan, but when McKell does and finds out Ava is his mate he doesn't want to let her out of his sight.

Ecstasy in Darkness is filled with not only witty comments but tenderness, love, friendship and who can forget the steamy scenes that can fog up anyone's glasses. I couldn’t get enough of McKell! He was possessive , yet only had a softer side for his Ava. Ava was a bit too much to handle in certain parts. I mean who wouldn't want this Alpha male taking over all you senses?

Ecstasy in Darkness is a must read! I'm really excited to start from the beginning and catch up on this series, but I am also looking forward to reading more of this series. So many unanswered questions that I am super excited to have answered.

Loved this story, McKell was so hot! Talk about alpha male. He was so clueless at times that it funny. I almost felt sorry for him. But then he would open his mouth . This was a great book and I have to say that I truly enjoyed Ava and Noelle's comedy hour. I mean I couldn't get enough of the best friends. They were so damn funny. I wanted more. Thankfully Noelle's book is next with Hector and man I have been so curious about him. This book left me wondering what will happen next. I know the danger isn't over so what will happen. What about Dallas will he still want well I wont say in case that ruin's it for anyone else. Great read!

This is a cool series. I really enjoyed this one. I loved the banter between Ava and Noelle and Ava and McKell. There were some really funny moments in this too. Ava and McKell were such a great pair and super sexy too. I like all of the different powers and species this author has thought up.

I had so much fun reading this latest by Gena Showalter, that Ecstasy in Darkness maybe my favorite Alien Huntress book to date. A great snarky, yet vulnerable heroine and an alpha dominate hero who wants the heroine with every sense of his being, while not knowing where he stands with her, makes for some great reading. And let’s not forget that that love scenes are steamy and just too good for words.

Alien Investigation Removal (AIR) trainees Ava Sans and Noelle Tremain are the best of friends. Noelle was a rich girl rebel, while Ava grew up poor with an alcoholic mother. They have always relied on one another, and together they make a great team who cause a great deal of problems because they don’t listen to the rules. They’re called upon by their supervisor to bring down Victor McKell, the one-time¬ leader of the vampire army who can stop time in short bursts. McKell is thought to be unstable and psychotic. Perhaps the two-woman Apocalypse team of Ava and Noelle will have better luck at apprehending this dangerous vampire?

When Ava and Noelle come across McKell’s camp, they taunt him with sexual innuendos, which he responds to. Basically Ava and Noelle tell him they will make out in front of him and him being a man, is all for it. Because of that, they’re able to incapacitate him. McKell promises murder, although he’s very attracted to Ava. He’s able to escape because of his powers, and will return for his revenge and to claim Ava. Noelle can’t believe McKell got the upper hand on them, especially Ava, who can’t stop thinking of her favorite butterscotch candy when it comes to McKell. In Ava’s mind, she has called dibs on McKell, although she knows she’s playing with fire when it comes to him. But then McKell arrives on her doorstep and wants to help Ava and AIR apprehend an alien queen on the loose who, through sex, can pass along a disease that causes men to become cannibals. Ava and McKell kiss on their bargain, and soon McKell won’t allow Ava out of his sight because Ava is his mate. McKell isn’t happy about this new turn of events because the only blood he can now drink is Ava’s.

Ecstasy in Darkness is a rip-roaring, laugh out loud a minute wild ride that only Gena Showalter can write. This latest in her Alien Huntress series is a world filled with alien species, vampires and warrior women who are trying to save the world. A book like this is perfect for readers who enjoy a combination of sci-fi paranormal with smoldering love scenes that if they could, have steam rising from them.

I couldn’t get enough of McKell, who is all out of sorts in regards to Ava. His alpha, possessive tendencies toward his spunky woman are full of wonderful silliness and endearing playfulness. Ava has always felt less than worthy, and when McKell enters the picture, his desire and respect for her makes her feel on top of the world. And Ava’s friendship with Noelle is wonderful as well. These are two women who would die for one another if they had to.

You really can’t go wrong with a Gena Showalter novel. Ecstasy in Darkness is a must read where I’m already anxious for the next Alien Huntress novel, which I hope is Noelle’s who needs her HEA like her friend Ava now has.

A must read!

I started listening to the audiobook and I just hated the narrator. I could understand when she was reading the girls' lines and she would use the "sex worker" voice. But she read everything with the same intonation! And believe me, it's not cool when you read about someone's demise in a "sexy" voice. So approximately in the middle, I switched to e-book but the damage was done and overall I wasn't excited by the book. Maybe if I just read the book myself I would like it much more, I don't know.

Ecstasy in Darkness
3 Stars

Growing up on the mean streets of New Chicago, Ava Sans had nothing until she met Noelle Tremain and the two became AIR trainees together. Ordered to capture Victor McKell, a rogue vampire with the ability to manipulate time, Ava and Noelle relish the challenge until their gorgeous prey turns the tables on them and sets his sights on Ava. Against his better judgement McKell becomes obsessed with having the fearless Ava. But when the vicious Schön Queen threatens the woman he loves, McKell might have to do the unthinkable and give her up...

The weakest installment in the series so far. The romance feels forced and the Schön story arc is developing in some confusing directions.

In the previous book, McKell was a fierce warrior as well as sadist and a racist. This is still true of his character at the beginning of this novel, however, he has also deteriorated into an immature child annoyed at others for literally playing with his toys. Yes, he is a sexy stud, but his obsession with Ava is incomprehensible as her behavior is just as childish and idiotic as his, and it is unclear what they see in each other besides the obvious physical attraction.

Although their scenes together are sexy and steamy, the underlying human/vampire conflict (very reminiscent of Lothaire by Kresley Cole) puts a pall on the romance and is resolved too easily.

The wonderful interactions between the AIR team is missing in this book as well. The humor and sarcastic wit that was so appealing in the earlier installments comes across as ridiculous and absurd, especially with regard to Ava and Noelle’s slapstick friendship.

The Schön plotline is, unfortunately, not living up to its potential. To begin with the Schön Queen is simply revolting and the fact that Dallas feels any attraction toward her makes my skin crawl. Perhaps the fact that the series ends before Dallas gets his own story is actually a blessing in disguise as the idea of her as a heroine is not appealing at all.

Moreover, the manner in which the Schön threat is dealt with is both confusing and contrived. In fact, the whole time manipulation theme is a very weak and unimaginative method of forwarding the plot.

All in all, a disappointing addition to an otherwise entertaining series. The next and final book is Noelle and Hector's. Hopefully, it will be better.

I love it when dangerous men become mush for their heroines, and leading men don't come much more dangerous than exhiled vampire warrior Viktor McKell. But even though McKell has the power to stop time and wears the finger bones of past opponents as a necklace, McKell is going to wonder what hit him when AIR agent in training Ava and her Best-Friend-Forever Noelle are given the job of bringing McKell in for questioning.

While McKell is never going to be a white hat kind of guy, the fact that he ends up so smitten with Ava makes him work as a leading man. And the dialog was hilarious, Ava and Noelle show their 'love' by trash talking each other and McKell - who is fascinated by this verbal abuse - knows that he's finally won the heroine's affection when she dishes it out to him too. Ahh, l'amore.

There is also a major thread for the hero-in-waiting (and no the next book is not his yet, sigh), Dallas who is lamenting his singlehood while all his cohorts are all beoming one-of-twos. Next up is Noelle, since she gave up her dibs on McKell to her best friend Ava it's only fair that she gets her turn for a HEA.

When ever people go to the animal shelter, they see the cute puppies and cuddly kittens and go "Awwwww,I want that one." Not me, I want the older animals, one that growls and hisses, but has a certain look in his eye that pleads "Please see through this, take me home and I will love you forever" That was McKell and Ava to a tee. Although McKell was far from a beat up old tom cat, he was a hardened warrior who had been betrayed by all he knew. He was also fiiiiiiine like fancy wine.
Ava was his perfect match, feisty and proud. She was a street tough compared to his royal court upbringing. He was the ultimate vampire warrior, but he was also refined. This is probably, if not my favorite book of Gina's, in my top two. I just adored everything about this book. I loved the returning characters, especially Dev. If Dev and McKell were to do a menage story, I might die from too much bliss. (almost had to slap myself)The women make a fine showing in this series as well, not a weenie among them so far, even the gold chick is righteous. Bring on Dallas.

*I gave this Audiobook an A- for the story and narration at AudioGals

This was my first, but certainly not my last, Gena Showalter title. Ecstasy in Darkness grabbed my attention from the start and captivated me until the end, reminding me of what I used to find so special in these stories! In particular, I wanted to note that if you have not yet had a chance to read an Alien Huntress book, don’t be hesitant to try this one. Ms. Showalter did a great job of explaining the background such that this book easily stands on its own. Additionally, the love life of the hero and heroine are resolved in this title, so there is no HEA cliffhanger, unlike many other PNR/UF series.

3.5 stars. This was a good book but I didn't enjoy it as much as the others. Ava bothered me throughout the book a bit but she wasn't terrible. McKell was arrogant but in a very funny way.

Depsite my misgivings while reading this story the ending was great and didn't go the direction I thought. Which I was happy about it. Although the ending was a bit abrupt I still liked it.

This book just didn't have that angst and drama I really liked about Savor Me Slowly. Still this was a good read and it did very well at making me hate the Schon queen. I'm not a big fan of Dallas either. I'm not sure where Gena is going with the whole storyline (especially after this ending) but I am curious to see where the next book will take us.

Also the book has 502 pages and it said there were 384 while I was reading the book.

Summary:
Ava has something to prove to herself to her peers to the world… She is not trash she is better than that. Growing up on the streets has made Ava hard and a spitfire. She has learned hit first ask questions later! As a trainee for the AIR with her bestie Noelle, she has something to prove. They are sent on a mission that no other AIR agent has been successful with. To bring in McKell a dangerous vampire that has been shunned by even his own people. McKell is insulted first AIR sent some agents which he sent back missing some fingers and now they send two females, trainee’s at that! Really?! Is that the best they can do two tiny females who are in training… So when they catch him off guard and one of them calls “Dibs” on him he is shocked. Luckily McKell has the ability to control time and freeze people in place so when he is stunned he easily freezes Ava and Noelle until he is out of the stun. When the two come back the next day he knew he should have killed them! But one more look at Ava and any annoyance they cause him is worth it. After Ava stabs McKell he hunts her down to her place because he is not healing, at least that’s what he tells himself is the reason for seeking her out. In the mean time there is a very real threat of the diseased queen who wants to destroy Earth and the AIR could really use McKell and his unique talents. Mia tasks Ava with keeping her eye on McKell since she seems to be the only person McKell will let near him. Together Ava and McKell must battle vampires, the queen and her army and most importantly each other.

Review:
I really enjoyed this story. I could relate to the commitment phob Ava, she is feisty and independent. She relies on no one and is really only close to Noelle, to whom she is fiercely loyal! I can relate most closely to Ava so far of all the females in this series. McKell takes arrogance to a whole new level, watching him try to navigate his new life topside is interesting. When he writes “DIBS” on Ava in her lip gloss I about died laughing! This book is the MUST read!

First I must say that this book has one smokin hot cover. Besides that, as I expected this book was amazing. Gena Showalter knows how to deliver a story packed with conflict and sex appeal. The love scenes were written to perfection with just the right amount of heat without going overboard. Another thing I loved about this book is the humor, especially Ava and Noelle's banter. They have a unique friendship where they can basically verbally bash each other and not get mad...it is pretty hilarious at times. McKell played a pretty big part in a previous book in the series and I thought it was pretty interesting that he became a main character. He is an Alpha male with a huge ego and an interesting power and background. Initially I thought I would have a hard time liking him but it turned out it was a lot easier than I thought. If you have not read the previous books in the series I don't think it would be a problem to just pick this one up and read it but I always recommend a series should be read in order so you don't miss out on some of the background info that rounds out the story. The gist of the story is an alien queen is infecting people (through sex) and it turns them into raging cannibals. The New Chicago Police Department's Alien Investigation and Removal Agency is fighting to save the infected and get rid of the alien queen and her minions. Ava and Noelle are trainees and are sent to bring McKell in. After that is when the book starts to get really good (and that is really early on).

I loved the Ava and Noelle. They had the banter and relationship of two frat boys that had been friends since birth. The readers meet McKell in the previous book. He was the vampire who had the prearranged marriage with Bride. That did not work out; due to him trying to keep her alive he has been kicked out of the underground vampire world. AIR is not happy with McKell because he is keeping them from bringing him in so they may test his blood to see if he is the cure for the Schoen disease. Ava and Noelle have been assigned to bring him in.
The romantic pursuit in this was incredible. They both realize they have to change and evolve for this to work temporarily. Temporarily is the key word they are trying for here. They both acknowledge the attraction for each other. They are both willing to give into their needs, but only for a short span of time.
One of the many things I love about this series is the amount of content that is devoted to the characters of past books. With most series you only get a small glimpse of the previous books characters. This series the characters from the previous books have large roles with the focal characters of this book. I keep wondering when the delicious Dallas will finally get himself a book. AIR is still fighting the Schoen Queen.

Ecstasy in Darkness

Book Completed: 11/25/2012
Book Rating: ★★★
Read the series? Probably, I got the next
installment but I'm not sure I'd read them all.

I'm going to sum up my review nice and quick-ish because no one reads these anyways but myself.

This book was a solid read. I really enjoyed the relationship between Noelle and Ava even though it dwindled as the book progresses and the steamy-ish chemistry between McKell and Ava.

McKell wasn't quite what I expected for some reason. He was a bit more comical than usual alpha males, in fact, I didn't really get the alpha male vibe from him. I just figured with a tormented past like his, he'd be a little more angst-ridden.

I adored the way Ava was described and her personality. Her and I are very similar so therefore I connected a lot with her and her reactions.

I enjoyed the 'zombie' concept going on, although it frustrated me a bit with how it wasn't really solved. Oh well, moving on.

This book is a good pass-time, as is most of Showalter's novels so I recommend going to check them all out. I'm onto the next book of this series, just for shits and giggles. And it sounds steamier..

This book was okay. Basically a hot vampire and the plot saved it for me.
WHO WANTS TO READ A ROMANCE THAT KEEPS TALKING ABOUT THE HEROINE'S 1 NIGHT STAND WITH ANOTHER GUY?
1 night stands should not be a characteristic of the heroine readers want to love and relate to. If she has slept with men before the guy, AUTHOR, leave out the details! The prejudice I have to think of through the book is that the heroine is trashy. Especially when she thought she was crawling into bed with his Brother.....wtf.
