I'm going to start off by saying that The Shadow of the Wind and all of the books in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series are among my favorite reads of all time. I was absolutely devastated when Zafón passed away last year at the age of 55 after fighting a battle with cancer. The world is a richer place with his books in it, but it is a darker place knowing that his voice is now silenced for future books.
This is a collection of stories, some of them featuring characters from that series and some are standalones. I didn't connect with all of them, but the ones I did, I loved. In general, I'm not a huge short story fan because I need time to develop a bond, and Zafón is brilliant with his painting a picture with words so longer books from him are better for me. Yet this collection has some shining examples of his stellar wordsmithing, as well as a return to his beloved Barcelona.

I’ve only read The Shadow of the Wind,the first book in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, but after reading this beautifully written collection of his stories, I know I should read the others. There’s an aura of mystery around some of the stories here. There are stories about stories, about storytellers, about books, about the connections people make to them and to each other. Others are about love lost. Some are eerie and sad, yet lovely at the same time . There’s a fun one about Cervantes that was my favorite, with a prediction. “One day you’ll write a masterpiece, Cervantes”…
This is a gift to fans of Zafon who passed away in 2020.

He postergado la lectura de esta obra sabiendo que se trataba de la última.
Decidí leer un par de cuentos cada día, en un intento de alargar esta recopilación de poco más de 200 páginas, pero sólo lo logré el primer día porque el segundo cuando quise darme cuenta ya casi había terminado el libro.
Gracias a este gran contador de historia por haberme hecho pasar tan buenos ratos.
Siempre quedará en mi memoria David Martín, Fermín y los Sempere y esa extraordinaria “Biblioteca de los libros olvidados”.

جاء على لسان احد شخصيات زافون " كانت حيلته تكمن فى أن يتركهم دوماً و العسل على شفاههم، مثلما علمه أحد الرواة الحكماء في دمشق : " سيكرهونك من أجل ذلك، لكنهم سيرغبون فيك أكثر فأكثر"، رحل زافون و كرهنا اننا لم نشبع من حكاياته و الغازه , لازالنا نحلم باى عمل على مقدمته بقلم " كارلوس رويث زافون " ياتى مرة اخرى و نتمنى ان يكون له مزيد من القصص المخبأة فى مكتبته التى لن تنسى ابداً .
اخر آرث تركه زافون كان مجموعته القصصية التى لازالت تحوى الكثير من الالغاز عن مأساة اكثر الشخصيات المعذبة فى سلسلة مقبرة الكتب المنسية ديفيد مارتن و ماضيه الأليم , مخطوطات المكتبة المنسية و حجر اساسها ، اجداد دانيال سيمبيرى الاوائل و دورهم فى طباعة الاعمال و اسرار المخطوطات ، و لم تخلو ايضاً من الشخصية الشيطانية "اندرياس كوريللى" و دوره مع ادباء آخرين موهوبين, بدايات ثربانس مع الرواية المخلدة " الدون كيخوت " مع بعض الاحداث الخيالية , المهندس المعمارى الخالد غاودي و فنونه , اساطير اخرى من جواء اعياد الميلاد و كالعادة كلهم يقع تحت غبار مدينة البخار فى معقل كتالونيا برشلونة.
القصص كانت متفاوتة ما بين الممتاز و الجيدة و السيئة لكن فى الاخر العمل جميل و لا يتعارض مع سلسلة الكتب المنسية باجزائها الاربعة و لا يتداخل فى احداثها على الرغم من وجود شخصيات منها فمن الممكن قرائتها بغض النظر عن قرائتك لسلسلة الكتب المنسية ام لا , لكن طبعا سوف يختلف الامر كثيرا اذا كنت عايشت الشخصيات من قبل ذلك فستشعر بالحميمية و الاشتياق لهم من جديد فى رحلة لاخر مرة معهم .

Zafón decía en El laberinto de los espíritus que una historia no tiene principio ni fin, tan solo puertas de entrada. La ciudad de vapor es una recopilación de puertas de entrada al universo del Cementerio de los libros olvidados.
El libro está compuesto por 11 relatos ambientados en diferentes épocas que los amantes de este escritor disfrutarán muchísimo. Historias de fantasmas, de seres malditos, de sueños y esperanzas, de demonios… A mi parecer es indispensable haber leído antes la tetralogía del Cementerio de los libros olvidados, ya que este libro está lleno de curiosidades acerca de personajes, lugares y antepasados de los protagonistas que aparecen en las novelas.
Es cierto que al tratarse de historias cortas a veces no puedes profundizar tanto como te gustaría en cada relato o en cada personaje, pero Zafón es único en cada frase que escribe y esa forma tan mágica y característica de utilizar las palabras está presente en cada una de las historias.
En definitiva, este libro es un recopilatorio indispensable para todos aquellos que quieran volver a pasearse por esa ciudad encantada, que más perece un personaje que un lugar dentro de las obras de Zafón: La ciudad de vapor.

If you know me at all you know I absolutely LOVE Carlos Ruiz Zafon's writing, especially The Shadow of the Wind which remains my all-time favorite book. I've recently been making my way through a re-read of that and its companion novels, the stories that make up the 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books' series, which has been perfect for this fall season. So when I found out there would be a new volume from CRZ posthumously published this year, I was ecstatic. Prior to his unfortunate passing in 2020, CRZ collected short stories he'd written in both Spanish and English, some previously unpublished as well, for a sort of farewell to the series as a whole.
In these 11 stories, some of which tie directly to other CRZ books (though none require having read his work to enjoy), the moody, gothic writing and atmosphere we've come to know and expect from his work is ever-present.
"Blanca and the Departure" comes from the imagined memoirs of David Martin ('author' of The Angel's Game), and recounts a childhood experience he has that forever haunts him.
In 'Nameless' a young pregnant woman experiences some sinister caretaking from a mysterious woman and her two henchman.
We see the blueprints for the Cemetery of Forgotten Books itself in "Rose of Fire," and later understand how a Sempere relative decides to bring these plans to life after an encounter and friendship with Don Quixote author, Miguel de Cervantes.
These stories twist and turn within each other, bringing about similar themes and recurring images. The titular mist is pervasive as are red skies, thunderstorms, angel statues, and untimely deaths.
With any short story collection, there will be some you love and some you don't connect with. As a whole, I felt that I adequately enjoyed most of these stories, but none wowed me like other CRZ stories. Perhaps it's due to their length, or perhaps these weren't polished before he passed away. I don't really know, but I am still happy they exist. I think the best way to read these stories would be gathered around a campfire or in front of a fireplace on a cold, dark night. Read them aloud and enjoy the unsettling, creepy atmosphere they evoke.

Parcial, subjetivo, faccioso e com algum comprometimento. Esse sou eu quando falo dos livros de Zafón. Agora que estão avisados, dar-me ouvidos/ler o que aqui escrevo, poderá não corresponder à verdade, corresponde sim à minha verdade.
Este livro, estruturalmente diferente dos demais do autor, é aquele livro que nos acolhe da mesma forma que um simpático avô, que nos recebe e abre a porta da sua casa, nos senta no seu sofá, nos oferece um chá de camomila com um cubinho de açúcar, enquanto emocionadamente, mas de uma forma descontraída (fruto da idade e da experiência), nos conta (com um leve esgar de alegria no rosto) histórias da sua vida. E então confortavelmente sentados, enquanto paira um cheiro adocicado a bolo de chocolate, nos deleitamos a ouvir/ler estes onze contos que, Zafón, postumamente, presenteou aqueles que sempre gostaram e admiraram os seus livros, sobretudo os que seguiram a tetralogia Cemitério dos Livros que se iniciou com A Sombra do Vento.
Não me parece ver alguma incompatibilidade em ler este livro sem ter antes lido a série, mas recomendo que o façam, pois acredito que será mais apreciado, vê-lo-ão devidamente contextualizado, devidamente ambientado numa Barcelona triste, sombria, cinzenta, mas terna. Uma Barcelona chuvosa, fria, ventosa, mas habitada por personagens iluminadas por um enorme halo de luz. Uma Barcelona onde não poderiam faltar os nomes Sempere e Fermín, Cervantes, Gaudí e, como não poderia deixar de ser, o maravilhoso Cemitério dos Livros Esquecidos. Uma Barcelona febril, amaldiçoada, tingida de fogo, cinzas e sangue, mas afortunada e venturosa. Uma Barcelona enfeitiçada, inebriante e misteriosa. Uma Barcelona de vapor!
Tal como os seus restantes livros, aqui encontramos uma inteligente, sublime e estilizada redação, uma narrativa bela e engenhosa, cheia de uma imaginação maravilhosamente fácil de “digerir” e aquela inevitável característica dos livros do autor - agarra-nos do princípio ao fim. A magia própria e inconfundível de um contador de histórias.
Está é uma espécie de compilação de contos (alguns inéditos) que, irremediavelmente, me deixa um amargo na boca. Mais, queria mais, mais contos, mais livros, mais Zafón. E aí caio na triste realidade…Não haverá mais! Ficamos órfãos! THE END

وقد احترت في البداية كيف أقيمها ؟
هل بناء علي إحساسي الشخصي بالرواية، أم تعاطف مع قلم زافون ووداعا له ؟
هناك نجمة للمجهود بلا شك، وجودة التصوير، وموهبة صنع عالم غرائبي بهذا الشكل المبهر، ونجمة أخري لدمج القارئ في عالم مقبرة الكتب المنسية ... فمهما ابتعد القارئ عن عالم ظل الريح، يعود سريعا بالإحساس والشعور، ونكمل طريقنا معه وكأننا أبدا لم نبتعد ..
ثم نجمة ثالثة لزافون نفسه، وداعا له ..

وقد احترت في البداية كيف أقيمها ؟
هل بناء علي إحساسي الشخصي بالرواية، أم تعاطف مع قلم زافون ووداعا له ؟
هناك نجمة للمجهود بلا شك، وجودة التصوير، وموهبة صنع عالم غرائبي بهذا الشكل المبهر، ونجمة أخري لدمج القارئ في عالم مقبرة الكتب المنسية ... فمهما ابتعد القارئ عن عالم ظل الريح، يعود سريعا بالإحساس والشعور، ونكمل طريقنا معه وكأننا أبدا لم نبتعد ..
ثم نجمة ثالثة لزافون نفسه، وداعا له ..

When a favorite writer dies, you slow down on any of that writer's work you haven't read yet because you know you're reaching a hard and fast end to possible "first moments." You're torn between wanting to absorb everything that's available and wanting to stretch out the pleasure for as long as you can. It's a bit like receiving a box of fine chocolates: gobble them down in one sitting and make yourself sick with ecstasy or just eat one a week and make them last for months? And if you've already read everything that writer has published, their passing leaves you bereft, with a sort of hole torn into your reading heart that no other writer's work will be able to fill. That's how I felt when Carlos Ruiz Zafón died in June 2020.
Ruiz Zafón in best know for his four volume "Cemetery of Forgotten Books" series that is set in Barcelona in and around the Franco years. Ruiz Zafón has an elegant, gothic writer's voice that would seem over the top coming from almost anyone else, but he pulls it off. Over those four novels readers become familiar with and genuinely attached to the Barcelona Ruiz Zafón depicts.
Now, more than a year after Ruiz Zafón's death, readers have been granted what seems little less than a miracle: a new collection of Ruiz Zafón stories, most set in Barcelona and many featuring characters from the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series. That collection is The City of Mist. The back story here is that Ruiz Zafón had enough time once he knew he was terminally ill, to assemble this collection and that he specifically wanted it released after his death as a small gift for his readers.
And what a gift it is!
The stories aren't perfection. Ruiz Zafón writes best when he writes at length. When he's producing briefer pieces that gothic voice overwhelms the power of character and narrative, which can lead even readers who love him to do a bit of eye rolling. But it doesn't matter that the stories aren't perfect. They're unexpected moments in Ruiz Zafón's world, in his Barcelona, and any reader familiar with his work is always going to be reading the stories within the larger context of his oeuvre. He's already created more than enough magic to imbue these stories with.
The City of Mist is a gift to readers, but those familiar with his work will be most able to appreciate it. If you haven't read any Ruiz Zafón, don't start with City of the Mist. Start with the first book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series: The Shadow of the Wind. After that, if he's captivated you the way he's captivated so many readers, keep going with the series and make your way through The Angel's Game, The Prisoner of Heaven, and The Labyrinth of the Spirits. They each stand on their own, but they also twine around each other in complicated, beautiful ways. Then, reach for The City of Mist. You don't, of course, have to follow my suggestions. but take them to heart. Entering Ruiz Zafón's Barcelona for the first time is something you can do only once—and it's worth entering that world in the way Ruiz Zafón first brought it to readers.

يختتم مُحرر الكتاب مقدمته عن قصة نشر هذه القصص بتلك الجملة العييَّة:
"عندما يكون هذا المُؤلِّف قد خلق توصيفًا من قبيل: ثربانتيّ، ديكنزيّ، بورخيّ...فمرحبًا بكم في كتابٍ ثافونيّ جديد..."
فتتقافز التساؤلات في عقلي تجاه هذه الوقاحة، ما قيمة أدب زافون كي يكون في مصاف هؤلاء؟ أللرغبات التجارية يدٌ في تصنيف قيمة الأدباء؟ ثم سؤال ساذج ولكن لا بُدَّ منه، متى نبت في وادينا الطيب هذه التسليعات الأدبية الخرقاء؟
ينهشني الفضول لتبيُّن دوافع المحرر وهو يُلصِق ياء النسبة بزافون عقب أسماء هؤلاء، والجملة في ذاتها لا تعدو كونها نداءً تجاريًّا رخيصًا كالذي يُنادي به الباعة على بضاعاتهم في أسواقهم المزدحمة، فيلتفت بعض الزبائن في حالة تشتت بليد، من ينادي على الحقائب؟ من يصرخ على الأحذية؟ ومن الواضح أنّنا بتنا في سوقٍ كبير، لسنا في وسط ثقافي، بل في سوق، يسرع الناشرون والكُتَّاب والمُترجمون لصنع الشيء من اللاشيء، فقط جعجعةٌ تُسمَع ولا طحنٌ يُرَى.
وحديثي لا يقتصر على هذا العمل الرديء المُهترَأ، بل يشمل مهازل الإنتاج الأدبي في وقتنا الراهن، ولا يتسع المقام لإفراد الحديث عن تحويل القراءة إلى سوق مالي مُشوَّه، ولكن تناول هذه القصص الممسوخة قد يكون خيرَ مثال عن فن صناعة الأمجاد على أصداء الأسماء، ولا أفهم من المسؤول عن هذا بالضبط، أللقارئ يدٌ في هذا؟ أنحن المذنبون لأننا نساهم بأموالنا وسعينا الحثيث وراء الجديد في توليد هذه التفاهات؟ أم منْ؟ كيف لي أن أجلس وأتهم هذا وذاك وأنا نفسي أول المذنبين؟
هي بالفعل مدينة من بخار، ولكنه بخار الدعاية، مدينة قصصية هزيلة، قام بإسنادها وتقويم دعامتها، بخار الهتافات اللاهثة خلف أسماء الكاتب الراحل حديثًا كارلوس زافون، ولم أقم بمحو مراجعاتي التي أفردتُ فيها القصيد تغزُّلًا ببراعة فكرة الرباعية، قرأتها كلها على سنين متعاقبة ولم أنكر قربها إلى قلبي وعددتُها روايةً تحكي الكثير مما يجعل الكاتب ذا قيمة أدبية تستحق الإشادة، ولكنَّ يبدو أن أرقام المبيعات وسعة انتشار الرباعية جعلت فرصة احتلاب كل مخزون الرجل تُغرِي وتلمع ببريق زائف، فجاءتْ فكرة طباعة هذه المجموعة القصصية المُتضمنة قصصًا سبق نشرُها بالفعل، وقصص أخرى لا ترقى إلى مصطلح "القصة" أصلًا، وبعض التداعيات التي لا ندحة من الإقرار بغرابة أن تكون مكتوبة من قِبل زافون.
مجموعة قصصية غريبة التكوين، لا ألمح أي قيمة أدبية، حتى عناصر القصة القصيرة تلفظ أنفاسها الأخيرة، وهذا الاحتفاء بالأجواء القوطية لا أعلم فائدته الزخرفية إذا كان الهيكلُ نفسه قد أُفْرِغ من أساساته، اللغة المبتذلة في أسلوبها، البعيدة كل البعد عن أي عفوية، لوهلة لم أرَ أمامي زافون في رباعيته، بل لغة كاتب يشد العزم كي يلفت انتباه الغير بكل اقتباس وتصاوير بلاغية مضحكة، ولا أفهم ما علاقة هذه القصص المفككة بالرباعية المنتهية؟ لماذا لا ندع الأشياء الجميلة المكتملة في سلام؟ من أين تعلم الإنسان عادته السخيفة في نبش قبور الغير؟
قد يتهمني البعض بالتحامل على الكاتب، وهو شيء غير صحيح ألبتة لأن تقييماتي المرتفعة لأجزاء الرباعية مازالت موجودة، ومازلت�� أُومن بها، ولا غضاضة شخصية تجمعني بالكاتب مثلًا، كل ما في الأمر أن هذه المجموعة ما هي إلا استغلال الرمق الأخير في اسم الكاتب.
وأودُّ التنويه على أن هذا التداعي قد ظهرت إرهاصاته أصلًا في الجزء الأخير من الرباعية، متاهة الأرواح التي مُزِجتْ فيها التواريخ بالأسماء بالأحداث في ضبابية غريبة، وقد عجَّت بالأخطاء الفاضحة، ولكنّي -محمولةً بعواطفي تجاه الرباعية كلها- لم أشأْ إعارتها انتباهًا أضخم من اللازم، واكتفيتُ بتقييم هذا السِّفر الضخم، ومن الواضح أن بهذا التساهل وذاك، تتزايد فرص الاستغلال، ونرى أعمالًا واهيةً غريبة كتلك.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón was my favourite writer since I was old enough to appreciate literature. Now, 15 years later, I couldn't stop the tears while reading this book. The thought of this being my last adventure with him breaks my heart.

When it was announced in 2020 that Carlos Ruiz Zafon had passed away, I was devastated. “The Shadow of the Wind” (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) is one of my all time favorite books, and the entire “Cemetery of Forgotten Books” series is a treasure to me. I was both surprised and incredibly excited when I found out that Mr. Zafon had prepared a little collection of short stories and given instructions that it should be published posthumously. This made me smile, albeit sadly. This is just his style, a little final present for his readers, a little comfort in their grief.
It was a little bittersweet to pick up, honestly, but the sweet took over quickly. The pleasure of reconnecting with beloved characters, even in small doses, to walk the misty and dirty street of his Barcelona one more time was such a lovely thrill.
The eleven stories in this collection are best enjoyed if one has read Zafon’s other work, as they often reference plot points and characters from their pages, but they might be an intriguing place to start for newbies. Like most short story collections, a couple were less successful, but generally, I was enthralled and simply hungry for more pages. The darkness, the hints of supernatural, the beautiful and dangerous women that populate Zafon’s novels are here, and give us glimpses into the origin of the famous Cemetery, a never published work by Cervantes and his connection to the Sempere family, but also to a mysterious foreign publisher…
The final story his clearly Zafon’s final bow, his goodbye over two short pages. I will miss the excitement of looking forward to his latest books, but I will cherish his work for ever.

أولا يكفيه نجتمين ونصف فقط لا غير
أحببت السلسلة وقبل ان انتهي منها وصل خبر نشر مدينة من بخار وهي قصص مجمعة للكاتب كارلوس زافون كاتب سلسلة مقبرة الكتب المنسية فتوقعت انها الحكايات من قلب الاحداث ووراء الكواليس بالطبع
ولكنني فوجئت بوضع مختلف تماما .. فهي مجموعة قصييه مختلفة بل وبعضها مفكك أيضا
أحببت القصص التي فيها جزء من حياة دايفيد مارتن ولكن مع كل اسف ليس بالدرجة الكافية وبالتالي التقييم كان صعب ولكن زافون واسمه فقط له نجمه مني
لم احب استغلال اسمه في تحصيل مبيعات جديدة بدون اي مبرر فتلك القصص ليست جيدة ليتم نشرها تحت اسم كاتب ترك علامة واضحة ومهمة في تاريخ الأدب الاسباني والاوروبي والمترجم والعالمي بسلسلته المميزة
ولكن هذه المهزلة احزنتني .. لن اقول اني كرهتها تمام الكره ولكني لم استمتع ابدا وخصوصا اني قرأتها مباشرة بعد الانتهاء من متاهة الأرواح فلم اكن ارغب بعد في مغادرة هذا العالم المميز لأجد نفسي امام قرار سئ ندمت عليه بعدها
فتلك العبقرية في المتاهة والتي قيمتها بخمس نجوم كاملين قد انحدرت بشكل بشع لنصل الي هذا البخار او بالأحرى السراب
ولكن في كل الأحوال اتمنى ان يقرأها الجميع لتقيموا بأنفسكم هذه الأشلاء الباقية من أفكار وابتكارات زافون

بعد القراءة الثانية و جدت رأيي لم يختلف ولكن قد ازيد نصق نجمة ليصبح التقييم ثلاث نجمات فقط
نبدإ بلمحى من حياة دايفيد مارتن وهو بطل من أبطال الرياعية ثم بعد هذا الكثير من الهرتلات والمزيد والمزيد من القاء اللوم على الله وايضا وضع الشخصيات النسائية قي نقس الموضع الحيواني المعتاد من زافون
قد اكون زدت من تركيزي هذه المرة أثناء القراءة ولكن ما زالت المجموعة لم تدخل قلبي

No puedo escribir una reseña, realmente quiero hablar de mis sentimientos alrededor de este libro y de su autor.
Siempre he dicho que mi autor favorito es Carlos Ruiz Zafón y curiosamente hay un libro qué aún no leo de él y es que siento que cuando lo acabe toda la magia de su trayectoria que envuelve mi vida desaparecerá y no quiero eso. El libro es las luces de septiembre.
Sin embargo este libro lo leí porque es una antología de cuentos, y claramente lo amé, unas historias más que otras, mis favoritas son la mujer de vapor y apocalipsis en dos minutos.
¿Qué más puedo decir? Terminé este libro con lágrimas en los ojos, lágrimas de rabia y desolación preguntándome la razón por la que un talento como el de él fue apagado, preguntándome por todas aquellas historias que imaginó y no alcanzó a escribir por la música que no alcanzo a componer y también me embarga un sentimiento parecido al de la orfandad por jamás haberle conocido en persona, de decirle lo mucho que sus libros significa para mí y como cambiaron mi vida.
El fue, es y seguirá siendo mi escritor favorito, gracias por tu legado y descansa en paz, maestro.
Siempre he dicho que mi autor favorito es Carlos Ruiz Zafón y curiosamente hay un libro qué aún no leo de él y es que siento que cuando lo acabe toda la magia de su trayectoria que envuelve mi vida desaparecerá y no quiero eso. El libro es las luces de septiembre.
Sin embargo este libro lo leí porque es una antología de cuentos, y claramente lo amé, unas historias más que otras, mis favoritas son la mujer de vapor y apocalipsis en dos minutos.
¿Qué más puedo decir? كانت أزمانًا أسطوريّةً ليس للحكاية فيها حيلةٌ إلّا باستذكار أحداثٍ لم تقع قطّ، ولا تستلهم الحياةُ فيها من الأحلام إلّا إذا كانت أحلامًا عابرةً وزائلة. وكان الشعراء الأغرار في تلك العصور يعلّقون سيوفًا حديديّةً على أحزمتهم، ويمتطون صهوات الجياد بلا وعيٍ أو مصيرٍ حالمين بأبياتٍ تسيل من نصلٍ مسموم. وكانت برشلونة آنذاك مدينةً وحصنًا تغفو في حضن مَدْرَجٍ من الجبال الملغومة بقطّاع الطرق المتوارين عن الأنظار خلف بحرٍ من لون الخمر مُخصبٍ بالضوء والقراصنة. وكان اللصوص والأوباش يُشنَقون على أبوابها لترهيب الطامعين بأملاك غيرهم. وما بين أسوارها المهدّدة بالانفجار، ينصهر تجّارٌ بحكماء ورجال بِلاط ونبلاء من جميع المراتب والمناصب، في خدمة متاهة الدسائس والمال والخيمياء، المتاهة التي طبّقت شهرتُها الآفاقَ وأماني العالم المعروف والمرتجى. قيل إنّها المدينة التي أراق فيها الملوك والقدّيسون دماءهم، وإنّ الكلمات والمعرفة تجد فيها ملاذًا، وإنّ أيَّ مغامرٍ يمتلك دينارًا في اليد وأكذوبةً على الشفاه بوسعه فيها أن يعانقَ المجد، ويضاجعَ الموت ويستيقظَ مُبارَكًا بين أبراج مراقبة وكاتدرائيّاتٍ شتّى ليؤسِّسَ لنفسه لقبًا وثروة.

Maker of books, labyrinth builder, painter of mists and shadows, custodian of lost dreams, poet of doomed romances and lost causes... Carlos Ruiz Zafon has joined other famous ghosts to become one with the city he loved.
I hope he will be long and kindly remembered for his passion for the written word, the deep roots of his love for the history and the shape of the city, the gothic romance flavour of his tales.
The Old Book Factory stood out among them all. Turrets and hanging bridges emerged from its extravagant profile, suggesting the work of a diabolical architect who had discovered how to flout the laws of perspective. Domes, minarets and chimney stacks seemed to charge through a chaos of vaults and naves supported by dozens of flying buttresses and columns. Sculptures and reliefs snaked along its walls, and rotundas, speckled with windows, sent out shafts of ghostly light.
I knew before I picked the volume out that this is Zafon’s last visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a collection of short stories to flesh out and complement the main series of four novels centered on Barcelona. Bittersweet memories of previous visits compete against the joy of meeting old friends, and the magic show of light and shadow draws me once again into this real-unreal landscape of history and dreams where you can meet with both Don Quijote and Antonio Gaudi as you turn a street corner in the old part of town.
And so, when 23 April came round, the prisoners in the block turned to David Martin, who lay in the shadows of his cell with his eyes closed, and begged him to tell them a story with which to alleviate their tedium.
“I’ll tell you a story,” he replied. ‘A story about books, dragons and roses, as befits the date, * but above all, a story about shadows and ashes, as befits the times ...”
* 23 April, St George’s Day (World Book Day), is celebrated in Catalonia with gifts of roses and books.
So, instead of regrets at the slimness of this volume, let us rejoice in the stories gifted to us by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and set out once again to unravel the mysteries of its imposing mansions: learn how a drop of blood from the last dragon, gifted by the Emperor of Constantinople to the vagabond of the seas Edmond de Luna, will lead to the building of a book sanctuary in Barcelona; how a Sempere ancestor printed a secret play by Cervantes, a play inspired by the most beautiful woman in the world, Francesca di Parma, and lost in a Faustian deal with a demon; how ghosts from the Civil War bombardments cross paths with Franco’s killers-for-hire in rundown hotels, and how Gaudy toiled to transform stone into wings.
I was an instant fan of the author upon reading the first book in the series. The actual plot details and the names of the actors have since become a little vague, but his particular style and his love for the written word shine as brightly in these short pieces as they did on our first date. I don’t care how fanciful and twisted the plots are, or how many liberties the author has taken with historical fact:
Others still would protest vehemently at the mere suggestion that any of the events referred to in this modest apocryphal romance could have happened at any moment or place save in the decadent imagination of some heartless scribe.
This scribe has enriched my inner landscape and I hope his books will be saved from oblivion by a future young reader wandering up and down the corridors of the Cemetery of Lost Books.

Gli incontri avvengono quando è il momento giusto. Così è accaduto per me con questo scrittore. Sono anni che accarezzo l’idea di leggerlo. C’era sempre altro che aveva la precedenza. E poi perché leggere questo scrittore super gettonato, autore di bestseller. Lo avevo liquidato pensando che non ne valesse la pena.
Poi la vita scombina le carte e arriva la morte a prendere il sopravvento. Era ancora giovane. E di nuovo quell’idea accantonata di volerlo leggerlo, ritorna alla ribalta.
La città di vapore è quindi il mio primo Zafòn e per me che amo i racconti non potevo che iniziare da qui.
Ci sono alcuni racconti che ho trovato bellissimi e perfetti:
come quello che vede Gaudì in viaggio verso New York per trovare fondi per finire la sua Sagrada Familia. Oppure come quello in cui un uomo misterioso convince Miguel de Cervantes a scrivere il libro che non è mai esistito.
Altri invece, sono un po’ meno riusciti.
“Carlos Ruiz Zafón concepiva quest’opera, oltre che in se stessa, come un riconoscimento ai suoi lettori, che lo avevano seguito nel corso della saga iniziata con L’ombra del vento. Oggi, a causa del carattere postumo con cui viene pubblicata, diventa anche un omaggio della sua casa editrice all’autore, un riconoscimento al quale si uniranno sicuramente i lettori di uno degli scrittori più ammirati del nostro tempo.
La città di vapore è un ampliamento del mondo letterario del Cimitero dei libri dimenticati. Sia per lo sviluppo di aspetti sconosciuti di qualche personaggio, sia per l’approfondimento della storia della costruzione della mitica biblioteca, sia perché la tematica, i motivi o l’atmosfera che avvolge questi racconti risulteranno familiari ai lettori della saga. Scrittori maledetti, architetti visionari, identità soppiantate, edifici fantasmagorici, una plasticità descrittiva irresistibile, la maestria nei dialoghi… e soprattutto la promessa che il racconto, la trama, il fatto stesso di narrare ci porteranno in un territorio nuovo e affascinante.”
Il vapore è il filo rosso che unisce tutti i racconti.

The City of Mist is a story collection that Carlos Ruiz Zafon prepared before his death in 2020, and intended for publication after his death. There are eleven stories, most set entirely in the moody, gothic-toned city of Barcelona swept by fog or rain or snow or smoke; any substance to make views less clear.
The stories range from near fable to a fable of Cervantes, one of my favorites, “The Prince of Parnassus.” “Nameless” is has a strong sense of place with evil and malevolence lurking everywhere around the innocent. “Rose of Fire” is a fable on the origin of the labyrinth of books. “Kiss” just a good short story.
Setting is so vital to these stories and wartime damage in Barcelona is a major part of the setting. Characters recall the fighting, recall people lost. It adds to the darn aura as does the gothic architecture.
If you have read any of The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, I believe you will enjoy these stories. Also, fans of well written, atmospheric short stories with strong, individual characters should add this to their list.

En la muerte de una persona siempre se tiende a encumbrar y mitificar su figura, pero creo de verdad que con el fallecimiento de Carlos Ruiz Zafón se va la mejor pluma del siglo XXI en España. Ya lo puse en las reseñas de la saga de La Sombra del Viento antes de saber que estaba enfermo y me reafirmo escuchando estos cuentos ambientados en esa Barcelona de sueño que inventó Zafón.
Además, la narración de Jordi Boixaderas aporta más riqueza a las historias. Si podéis, intentar escuchar el audiolibro que creo que la experiencia será distinta.

El libro contiene varios cuentos, los cuales están inmersos en el mundo del Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados creado por Zafón. Algunas historias son atrayentes, por ejemplo la historia que involucra a Miguel de Cervantes y también la que involucra a Gaudí. La historia de la hija del fotógrafo también fue interesante.
Sin embargo, el mismo hecho de que sean historias cortas con finales medio inconclusos (característicos de las historias cortas) hace que no me guste al 100%.

Снощи малко преди полунощ приключи последната ми, за съжаление, среща с вълшебника Кралос Руис Сафон.
И оттогава, вече няколко часа, дори насън, все мислех какво да напиша за тази книга.
Този път Сафон ни изненадва с разкази. И ако си мислите, че заради по-кратката форма магията е по-малка, лъжете се... за щастие. Напротив, тук тя се усеща дори повече, защото е по-сгъстена, по-концентрирана, и на това малко пространство от по няколко страници въздейства още по-силно.
Поне един от разказите - "Огнената роза" - ми беше познат отпреди. И затова мислех, че при това второ прочитане няма да ме впечатли толкова. Напротив. Сега успях да вляза по-дълбоко в него и думите ме завладяха истински. И няма да се нареди сред любимите ми само защото сега при четенето му липсваше елементът на изненадата.
В някои от разказите - като например току-що споменатия, както и в "Бланка и сбогуването" и "Принцът на Парнас" - се срещаме с вече познати герои. В "Принцът на Парнас" Корели ми се видя още по-зловеща фигура, отколкото в "Играта на ангела" - или може би просто бях забравила колко е зловещ и мрачен в действителност.
Най-мрачни и страшни ми се сториха едни от най-кратките разкази - "Коледна легенда", "Алисия на разсъмване", "Безплътната жена". В последния като че ли имаше нещо познато, някак имах чувството, че вече съм чела тази история, а в същото време си давах сметка, че това не е възможно.
За мен книгата беше изключително въздействаща, една от тези, след които е трудно да започнеш ново четиво. Както и от тез, които едновременно искаш да "погълнеш" наведнъж, и да ги четеш на малки "глътки", за да имаш за по-дълго време.
Тази книга беше изненада - горчива и сладка. Прощален подарък от вълршебника Сафон.

Hay algo en los inicios en cualquier historia de Zafón que capta por completo mi atención. No importa si es una novela de quinientas páginas o dos hojas de una historia corta, la narración siempre es la protagonista y sus palabras son impecables.
Algunas de estas historias ya las había leído, solían estar en la página oficial del autor, reencontrarme con ellas fue hermoso y tenerlos en un solo volumen para cualquier lector y fan es perfecto.
Rosa de fuego sigue siendo mi favorita, la facilidad de integrar elementos sobrenaturales inexplicables a una trama cruda fue siempre uno de sus más grandes talentos al igual que el integrar una historia dentro de otra historia. Sin nombre me llegó al alma y El Príncipe de Parnaso es probablemente su escrito corto mejor estructurado. Aun así, hay belleza en todos y cada uno de los cuentos.
Una mención especial para el final de Una señorita de Barcelona, me encanta que no te dejen claro un final. Me llena de alegría la incertidumbre literaria o un final abierto.
Saber que no volveré a leer nada nuevo de su pluma me llena de tristeza, la relectura será ya mi única aliada.
Su mente no podía abarcar la complejidad y la aritmética que sostenía aquella ilusión, pero se dijo que vendrían mentes más preclaras capaces de dilucidar sus secretos y que, hasta entonces, hasta que otros más sabios pudieran encontrar el modo de salvar el laberinto y recordar el precio de la bestia, guardaría el plano en el cofre familiar donde algún día, no albergaba duda ninguna, encontraría al hacedor de laberintos merecedor de tamaño desafío.
