I was gifted this book by someone who knew how much I enjoyed reading last years edition. This is a beautiful little hardback with lots of information, for those in Britain and Ireland, about the changing seasons, moon phases, gardening, the night sky and the natural world. Highlights are the monthly folk songs and recipes. I loved reading this each month and have already been given a copy of next years book, so I'm looking forward to seeing what this has to offer as my companion through 2024.

A lovely book to dip in and out of throughout the year. Such a pleasure to read of the changing seasons and habits of wildlife, and interesting recipes too. The beautiful illustrations and cover added to my enjoyment, I think I'd like one of these little almanacs every year. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers.

Lia Leendertz has produced another superb gem of a book in “THE ALMANAC” - A seasonal guide to 2023. A classic month by month guide to the world around us, including key dates, tide tables, the zodiac, seasonal recipes, the solar system even music, plus so much more.

Illustrated this year by artist Whooli Chen, this beautifully designed pocket book is ideal to carry around in your day bag for reference, to while away a few minutes or as an indispensable guide with literally everything you could need to know about each month and how the seasons affect them.

I found it hard to keep this book for the new year, wanting to read through it before 2022 is even out. A little peek here and there led me to reading the book fully but I’ll still be reading it each month, as it’s honestly such an adorable book.

The front cover is sooo gorgeous, perfectly designed with themed drawings of planets, nature, animals, in beautiful eye catching colours. There’s a handy index at the back, a ribboned bookmark, lots of drawings and a textured cover which add to make this a must have book for 2023!

A wonderful accompaniment to your regular diary, once you have one you’ll want one EVERY year and they can be kept on a bookshelf as a reference for previous years.

#TheAlmanac:A Seasonal Guide to 2023 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to LoveReading for my copy of the book in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I have really enjoyed reading this each month this year. Leendertz’s writing is just lovely (see below) and I’ve appreciated the relevant recipes and folk songs each month.

***
October: “The hour changes and our day is cut short, our commute plunged into darkness. It is hard not to resent this in the moment that it happens, and in the following days as we wrestle with this new dose of darkness just when we need it least. We always want the last dregs of summer to carry on. But try not to fight it. The dark and cold are here for good reason. Look around you and you will see that everything in the natural world is closing down — you can take the darkness as a cue to do a little of this yourself. We need rest times as well as active times in order to stop ourselves from burning out, and this moment is as strong a signal to rest as you are ever going to receive, just as it is to the plants, the mammals, and the insects. They know what to do, but we need to teach ourselves.”

December: “There appears to be something about reaching the deepest depths of the year that inspires us to use up an over-generous proportion of our precious resources in gathering, feasting and celebrating. And so this month we come to glittering, sparkling life, just as nature reaches its most complete hibernation. We light up our homes with twinkling lights, candles and log fires, and invite people in. We fight the dark. […] Historically this month has been about celebrating our having reached the nadir, and revelling in the fact that from here onwards our world will get incrementally lighter and brighter, and remarkably quickly too. At midwinter we have half a year of lengthening days ahead of us, and that is a joyous thought. If lighting up the darkness to mark this moment wasn’t in some way necessary to us, we wouldn’t have been doing it for so very, very long.”

This is a fabulous little pocket-sized Almanac. I love books like this and while a diary often gives you basic information, an Almanac goes into a lot more detail. This one is no exception.

After a basic introduction, this book then starts at the beginning of the year. January - there are important dates for this month followed by a wonderful page of what January represents, it is a time of reflection as the daylight hours are not as long as we would like. But the author does encourage you to look at what is happening outside, are there buds or bees starting to emerge.

Carrying on the author then takes a look at the sky, the moon phases, sunrise/set, tide times and then onto Lunar planting. Plants used to be set according to the moon phases and I really liked to see this included. There are also a couple of paragraphs about what shrubs, plants and trees are starting to flower as well as what you can harvest from your veg garden.

If you do have a veg garden or access to locally grown produce then what better than a couple of recipes? How about an orange glazed yeast bun or boiled suet and sausage pudding? Both of these sound amazing.

An Almanac also gives information about the Zodiac, here the author includes an introduction to the zodiac and gives information for Capricorn followed by a folk song. This then leads on nicely to what we can see in nature.

This is a wonderful book and has loads of detail and information. It is littered with black-lined illustrations and images that correspond perfectly to the item they accompany.

The book is easy to use as the pages have been sprayed on the corner and then gradually work down so it is easy to see at a glance roughly where you need to be. There is also a nice little ribbon that acts as a bookmark.

If you are a fan of the seasons and nature then this is a fabulous little book to have. It is great for leaving on a table for a reference book and takes no space up at all. It is a book that would make a wonderful gift for a family member or friend because I know I was delighted to receive my copy.

Educational and informative, wonderful to peruse through and one I would definitely recommend.

This is such a brilliant book, it has everything you could possibly want to know about the different months. There is a whole range of different information which is practical and useful to know. Including the moon, gardens ( what to look out for and the wildlife) recipes, different starsigns and also with each month it tells you what dates certain things are happening. It is a very handy and useful book that I will be using every month. It is packed with a lot of information and some beautiful sketches too. It is a great gift idea for someone who likes their seasons.

For a small hardback book this book contains a wealth of information, fascinating facts and interesting, useful information. Arranged by months, this book reflects a seasonal journey through the year from January through to December. This book is so valuable because it gives the actual dates for significant events in 2023, of holidays, special days and so much more. It is beautifully laid out with clear printing of the information, and illustrations of the tables – of tide times (with how to work it out for each locality at the start of the book) and phases of the moon. There is a beautiful drawing for the start of every month, often linked to the zodiac sign which is further detailed in the text. When the zodiac symbol is drawn, it also picks out the shape of the star formation that gives the consolation its name. This is a book with which to explore so much, with its section for each month, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to read and review it.
Each month begins with a list of the days of note in the month. This may include special days for particular faith like Lammas in the Christian faith in August, Bank Holidays, major sport events and other yearly landmarks like the Notting Hill Carnival. It gives details of the month “at a glance” such as the appearance of the countryside and traditional practices in rural areas such as Morris dancing. The “Sky at Night” section looks at which planets are more obvious in the hight sky. There is a page of the times of sunrise and sunset at a certain place, and the tide timetable. The phases of the moon are illustrated. Highlights of gardens are listed, and the concept of Gardening by the moon. Each month has two recipes, often from a part of Britain but also from around the world. It will often include ingredients that are freely available in that particular month, which encourages seasonal cooking. The sign of the Zodiac is discussed with an illustration. A folk song for the month with the tune is also given, with a set of traditional words. Nature is also given – May’s offering is pond life creatures illustrated allowing identification of certain beasts.
This is a book that will provide good reading throughout the year. I have picked out some favourites, such as the Folk Song for Aries’ Ram “The Derby Ram” given where I live. My favourite recipe is for Pea soup with cheesy mushroom dumplings, and the rhubarb recipe to be found in February. I enjoyed looking through this book in 2022, and it would be a fascinating guide through next year.

An Almanac provides astronomical and meteorological data for any given year including the rising and setting times of the Sun, schedules for the tides and Spring tides, tables of Moon phases and planet positions, a monthly calendar of special days, traditional events and historical knowledge, all of which are a pleasure to explore and enjoy through the seasons.

I am often searching the internet for this kind of information and always find it a challenge, especially for information specific to the British Isles and more localised folklore, traditions and customs. Then I discovered Lia Leendertz and her 'seasonal guide' Almanacs published in Great Britain every year which make it a breeze! These little books are a delight and cover much more than you would find in a typical Farmer's Almanac which obviously relates more to matters affecting agriculture and fishing.

Trusted guide

This is my third Lia Leendertz Almanac and this year the theme is the Zodiac. Every month there are records of heavenly activity, locations of planets and the best time to spot such things in the sky. Each sign of the Zodiac is explained in their given month including categories such as plantary symbol, associated planet, element, colour and characteristics.

This I will follow through the year as I always do, and this year especially the fabulous seasonal recipes, folk songs and exactly when to do things in the garden through each Moon quarter of the month. My garden is tiny but I am learning all the time for when I have a larger garden to turn into a sanctuary for all living creatures to enjoy the natural cycles of the seasons.

Nature's rhythm

I highly recommend this modest purchase to keep by your side and dip into each month. It's important for our body, mind, spirit and soul to stay in tune with Earth's natural rhythms. We know how good it feels to be in Nature when we feel more relaxed and more alive!

We know how wonderful it feels deep down inside when we experience a breathtaking sunset, or a magnificent Dawn Chorus, or the colours in the skly when the Sun goes down at the end of the day. It's also good to know what the ocean is doing and when it's safe or desirable to take a trip to the beach, take our shoes and socks off, and experience the sensation of bare feet on Earth's ground for a while. Taking in the sea breeze and feeling the strong rhythm of the sea makes us wonder why we don't do these things more often.

I hope you will make this beautifully illustrated and presented book your own and keep it by your side to remind you get close to Nature through 2023.

‘The almanac - a seasonal guide to 2023’ is a beautiful book. I haven't finished it; in fact, I've only dipped in. But I've seen enough to know I'll be revisiting it throughout the year, because that is the whole point of the book - it's an almanac. The description says it better than I ever can:

'Reconnect with the seasons in Britain and Ireland with this month-by-month guide to the world around us - including key dates, tide tables and garden tasks; constellations and moon phases; sunrises, folk songs, seasonal recipes plus a 'bun of the month'; and - because 2023 will be a good year for planet spotting - the solar system and the zodiac.'

Even as I flicked through the Almanac, I found myself reconnecting with the seasons. Each entry starts with a list of celebrations and holidays and has a description of the month and what to look out for in nature, beautifully written, full of wisdom and hope by Lia Leendertz.

From best gardening times, celestial events, tidal timetables - it's full of fascinating little tips and insights and I'm already looking forward to opening it at the start of each month. The recipes were especially welcome and although not one for astrology, I found the history of the zodiac signs and greek mythology to be fascinating.

Winter and darkness is a time for reflection, for reconnecting.

Everything passes, everything changes.

I was attracted to this by the very beautiful cover and when it arrived it’s quite a small book, so possible to carry around with you - as long as you’ve got a good sized bag. There are some wonderful illustrations done by Whooli Chen as well as lots of other images. Including a lot of information, month by month, on the Solar System, the sea, the moon, gardening, the Zodiac, Nature, Music and some fabulous recipes it a great reference book.

Some of the recipes had my mouth watering. Each month has a Bun of the Month plus another appropriate recipes - just to give you a taste (see what I did there) of what to expect fig and tahini challah, meadowsweet champagne and marzipan hot cross buns are all on offer.

The only issue I had was that the writing is rather small so it wasn’t easy to read without my glasses! I didn’t read every single page but I’ve read most of it and will definitely be revisiting it at the appropriate time next year. It would make a lovely Christmas present, particularly for anyone interested in astrology and astronomy, and a helpful guide to tasks and events season by season.

I have often bought an Almanac for the coming year and they have varied in quality, usefulness and beauty. This one is stunning and ticks all the boxes.

Packed full of information including key dates, tide tables, garden tasks, sunrises, moon phases, seasonal recipes, folk songs and more this beautiful little book will help you connect month by month with the seasons of Britain and Ireland.

This little gem would make a beautiful gift for anyone but particularly gardeners and those who enjoy nature or stargazing.

The Almanac: A Seasonal Guide to 2023

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: reference

I've always been an outdoor girl, a lover of nature. Brought up in a family where Sunday mornings meant looking to see what Adam the Gardener had to say for the upcoming week, and with Nan's readings from Old Moore's almanac I love this sort of book. I have it as an epub on my pc, but tbh I'd love to buy the book as a to-hand reference. I think books like this are one of the few that are better in print than on kindle/pc.
Its a fabulous mix of plants and the stars, recipes for the month, tide tables etc, a real nature lovers journal. I plan on reading each month next year at the end of the previous one, looking at whats ahead, whats in store. It reminds me of how big the world is, how long its been going and really how minute and shallow our place in it is.
Beautifully illustrated, it would make a great gift for any lover of the natural world.

Stars: five. A fabulous read to treasure and dip into each month.

Thank you to Anne of Random Things Tours and to Octopus Books for the opportunity to join the blog tour for The Almanac by Lia Leendertz, illustrated by Whooli Chen.

Having adopted our first dog over 4 years ago, I found myself starting to appreciate how our local area changes over the year in terms of the natural world on our daily dog walks. This beautifully illustrated book will be my handy guide for what I need to look out for and is packed full of information.

Each monthly chapter is broken down into sections including the night sky, the garden, a recipe, nature and the tide tables. I've shared an image below giving some examples. I'm looking forward to trying some of recipes including Barmbrack Buns in the October section.

This would be a lovely Christmas present for a friend or family member who enjoys the outdoors. Happy to recommend this excellent non fiction book.

Thank you to Octopus publishing and the author for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review.

The cover drew me to want to request this book. Is that not the prettiest cover ever. It’s so summery!! The content itself is just as fantastic. A total compendium for 2023 providing information about the moon cycle, the sea temperature, zodiac information and some seasonal recipes fitting with the holidays next year. I have quickly read through this but I know I will be returning to this each month next year as a reference guide.

Definitely worth a look and a read if you like reference style books. I’d almost be tempted to get this in a hard back copy for decoration in the kitchen!

This is a beautiful book. It is divided into the twelve months of the year.

Each month begins with an overview of the month, a guide to the solar system and the sky at night. It has information about nature, the moon and tides. I felt like it was a really good way to feel more in touch with the seasons.

I loved reading this. My favourite part was the seasonal recipes from around the world that are featured for each month.

This is a book that I will be dipping in and out of all year, it was a joy to read. I’m hoping to pick up some gardening tips too, as there is a feature for the best gardening and planting times every month.

Highly recommended and I think the cover is beautiful.

This is my second year reading Almanac and I found that this year has been more interesting. I have always been fond of the change in the weather, tide times and seasonal foraging.
I believe this book is such a great pocket guide for an outdoors person.
The only downside is that this book can be accessed only in the app and can't be sent to your Kindle therefore I won't be able to access this after two months which is disappointing really because book shares information month by month and what to look out for.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC.

I started reading this late last year and have been dipping into it ever since. I never knew I needed an Almanac (aren’t they for farmers?) until I read this…

It's a treasure trove of seasonal nature and I adore seeing what's in store each month. I love the blend of natural science and mythology, with recipes and folk songs. It's also beautifully illustrated.

From moon phases and tide times, to mythology and astronomy, from what’s happening in ponds to recipes and folk songs… this month by month guide informs and inspires.

This is such a lovely book and it’s been a delight reading it month by month over the year. Wow a year! It’s a comprehensive guide to the seasons and tides, moon cycles and the zodiac. If I have any criticism at all it’s of myself for not making more of the seasonal recipes or checking the tables for tides or the phase of the moon we’re in. I’m not going to buy it this year simply because of the above. I don’t make the best use of it. I may instead follow Lia Leendertz’s blog. But as a gift or a treat to yourself for the first time it’s perfect.

Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC.

This is a non fiction book covering the months of the year and producing information on a variety of nature topics within that month such as but not limited to -

Zodiac
Animals
Plants
Recipes
Moon cycles

This is informative, in an easy to read context.

This would make a great read for anyone interested in such topics. I would imagine this would be a more excellent gift however full of factual and useful information.

An enjoyable read.

I love reading Lisa's Almanac every year. There are stories, songs, recipes, connections to the natural world and a sense that there are patterns to the year that have been going on for millennia. It's a good book to ground you each month as you go along. This year's focus has been the zodiac but not as a horoscope, but more as the what and why of each month. I am looking forward to seeing what next year is about.
