Welcome to the aftermath...

Captain Stellar (Cal Bolden) thwarted Dr. Almighty’s deadly plan, but victory is complicated. Fernando hasn’t been the same since he unleashed his dark persona (Funesto) to destroy Dr. Almighty. Despite this and Cal’s commitment issues, he hopes the passion they’ve discovered while training side by side can blossom into a relationship.

But their triumph is short-lived. Princess Freeze (Rita) is out for blood, and she’ll stop at nothing to avenge Dr. Almighty’s death. With help from Almighty Labs’ lost recruits, she kidnaps Funesto, leading Captain Stellar and Magenta (Margo) on a desperate hunt through Chicago. With assistance from a former enemy, Captain Stellar can almost taste victory as he zeros in on Princess Freeze’s hidden headquarters.

But Funesto’s rescue is not as simple as it seems. After their team takes a devastating hit, Captain Stellar must face a new villain who threatens to destroy everything he holds dear.

Superheroes are one of those pleasures (I refuse to say "guilty" before that word) that I have to be in the mood to enjoy. When I'm in said mood, I could live, breathe, and know only superheroes and I'd be okay with it.

Not only did the second installment of the Captain Stellar series, Funesto have be living and breathing superheroes, it held me rapt from page one, utterly enjoying the dive back into the somewhat familiar yet also completely and creatively different version of Chicago that Cal, Fernando, and Margo inhabit, and where they are forced to find new allies, fight new enemies, and take on challenges that they hadn't thought they would ever face.

I will be honest, a lot of what really held me in the story was the development of Cal and Fernando, both together and in their separate ways. Cal dealing with familial issues that he didn't think would ever resurface, and Fernando having to come to terms with his own actions, and his own feelings, in regards to the lengths he was willing to go to to save his loved ones.

Of course, our favorite super heroes aren't the only ones we're introduced to. We're also given a more complete picture of the other subjects of Dr. Almighty's experiments, and Cal's rogue gallery seems to continue to grow and change, evolving in ways that are fascinating to watch. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but watch out for some new players on both the hero and villain sides. I think they're going to be the gift that keeps on giving.

So much fun to read! Funesto is just as good as the first one and doesn't keep you waiting. Love the characters, even the villains. I love the spicy diverse romance too. I gotta give my love to poor Dr. Kim, he deserved so much better than our salty protagonist, but you'll understand why Cal and Fernando are upset, so I can't hold it against them. Great part 2, to a cool superhero/action/romance series.
