A mediados del siglo XVII, España dejó de ser la primera potencia europea, pero la Inquisición española continuó desarrollando sus actividades. En el curso de los siglos siguientes, mantuvo a España aislada del desarrollo científico y cultural de la Europa del norte, prohibiendo a autores, estudiosos y eruditos de todo tipo; encarcelándolos; sometiéndolos a tortura e incluso ejecutándolos. El último ajusticiado es una novela sobre la vida de Cayetano Ripoll, un maestro de escuela, última víctima mortal de la Inquisición española.
Ripoll combatió contra el invasor francés a inicios del siglo XIX y fue capturado siendo deportado a Francia. Allí, en la oscuridad de una prisión, Ripoll experimentó un cambio total que lo impulsó, después de la guerra, a regresar a España y compartir su descubrimiento con sus compatriotas. Pero en una España todavía sometida a la Inquisición, su destino tendría un final trágico.
El último ajusticiado es la primera de la serie de novelas de la Inquisición narradas por César Vidal.

By the middle of the 17th century, Spain was no longer a leading power in Europe, but the Spanish Inquisition continued to carry out its activities. In the centuries that followed, it kept Spain cut off from the scientific and cultural developments in Europe to its north, banning, imprisoning, torturing and even executing authors, scholars and learned people of all types. The Final Victim is a novel about the life of Cayetano Ripoll, a school teacher and the last person to be executed by the Spanish Inquisistion.
Ripoll fought against the French invasion at the beginning of the 19th century and was captured and taken to France. There in a dark prison, Ripoll experienced a total change that propelled him to return to Spain after the war and share his discovery with his countrymen. However, in a Spain that was still subject to the Inquisition, a tragic end would be his destiny.
The Final Victim is the first in a series of novels by Cesar Vidal on the Inquisition.
