Sinful Surrender #1

Embracing Darkness

Rate this book
By far, I am the smartest in my family, however when it comes to relationships, my best attempt was a disaster. My ex-fiancé’s obsession with me and my top-secret dissertation knows no bounds, not even when I slap a restraining order on his difficult ass.
He keeps promising me forever and all I want to do is hide behind the two things that have never lied to me: sugar and numbers. They’ve never failed me, never pretended to be anything different, and offer a perfect distraction from a life that has only provided me trauma.
Until three men walk into my life to complete a kitchen renovation I didn’t ask for. It wouldn’t have been so bad had I not slept with two of them yesterday and the other one hot as sin salivating over the chance to bend me over the unfinished counter.
What should have been a quick business transaction and a one-night stand finds me knees deep in a world I had no idea existed. More than just my dissertation is on the line, the connection between my ex, my work, and these men way more tangled than I had ever anticipated.
For once in my life I’ll have to trust more than just numbers and sugars.
I’ll have to trust the three men who have vowed to keep me safe from a world I don’t understand.
It helps that I’m falling in love with all three of them but will the universe let me be that greedy or will this little tidbit of happiness be ripped from me too?
This is an 18+ Dark MMMM Romance made for mature audiences. It is the first installment in the Sinful Surrender series and does end on a mild cliffhanger.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

I should start by saying that the concept of this book and the major plot points were very interesting. I can tell that even more interesting events will unfold and more shocking details will be revealed in the next book. I’ll admit that some of the revelations at the end of this book surprised me; these details were well hidden, but not in a way that I felt the author purposefully misled the readers. People who like dark romance and thrillers with spice may really enjoy this book.
Also, Paval (the kid) was adorable and there is no way to improve on him. His character was 5/5.

Other notes:
- The Instalove. Don’t get me wrong, in general I LOVE instalove. But the way it was written in this book didn’t make sense to me. It was close to the fated mates feeling, but this isn’t Pnr so it was perplexing as to how the characters had these feelings. And it wasn’t just lust. They were like: We are in love and also you need to be a 4th father to our kid.
- I feel like the book didn’t move forward for the first, like, 80% (except with sex). Not much happened with the plot for most of the book. The characters had the same conversations and narrations over and over.
🗣️Rhys: My Numbers!
🗣️Owen: No we never broke up, we are still getting married.
🗣️Any of the 3 guys: We love you Rhys, let’s do it. Also come live with us.
🗣️Rhys: I shouldn’t want them but I do. Also My numbers!
♾️Rinse and repeat.
- The spice kinda fell flat to me. But that’s a personal preference so I’m sure it works great for others.
- Coulda done with having more of the Gianni + Rhys backstory. This book had a lot of instances where the reader was told about stuff instead of being shown about stuff.
- Valentyn and Dmitri were kinda too close in personality. Their POVs weren’t distinct.

DNF @ 54%.

Sometimes I wonder if I don’t understand “dark romance” or if the authors don’t. Because this isn’t a dark romance, but then I didn’t expect an “insta-romance” to be dark. It does have some dark subject matter, but the romance itself is zero dark on a scale of 1-10. I mean, how many times are this guys going to triple check that Rhys is willing?

The plot is ridiculous. Which is fine. I was rolling with it. I really don’t think all the side biz, evil ex, awful family, and top secret dissertation stuff was necessary. This would have been a lot better if it was just legit poly handymen showing up for a kitchen renovation and falling for the nerdy math dude.

But, at least if you are going to opt for a ridiculous plot, if it could not be ignored over and over while someone gets jacked off? Can I at least get the DAP promised sometime this century? 54% is awful far to get in a insta-romance with him having nothing more than a kiss from one of the men. PWP would have made this great.

I certainly don’t think this is bad. But after setting it down, I had no desire to pick it back up.

It’s the year of dark romance for me and I’m all in! N. Slater is yet another amazing indie author I can’t wait to read more of. Check your TW then hold on 🖤

A why choose, MMMM, instaromance with characters that are cinnamon rolls and spice? Yes please! Rhys is a genius mathematician who finds solace in numbers. Escaping an extremely toxic relationship, it’s heartbreaking as he struggles with the aftermath of trying to leave that all behind. But he has a protective neighbor, Gianni, who will always be there to watch over him, and his partners, Valentine and Dmitri, will do anything to keep him safe. While they have a dark side, these men are such lovable characters. And the heat? You can’t go wrong with 4 beautiful men.

This wasn’t the darkest romance I’ve ever read but it was full of betrayal and pain and I got completely lost in the twists and suspense of it. Having been in a narcissistic, gaslighting relationship myself in the past, I actually found it extremely healing. She writes that trauma so exquisitely. Slater has given us a spicy read that proves the family you choose to surround yourself with will make you stronger.

Thank you N. Slater for the ARC.

I did enjoy this overall, but I thought the initial meeting of Rhys and Valentyn escalated quickly in a way that didn't feel realistic to me. I thought though the same about Pavals first meet with Rhys.

I did enjoy the storyline and the premise. I would like loved to have felt more fear from Rhys about Owen, too.

Would recommend.

Leaving an honest ARC review.

I'm a dark romance girlie through and through.
This one right here? *Chef's kiss*

Rhys is our MMC. He has been through so much, from an abusive relationship to family that didn't understand him. The whole situation surrounding Rhys' life broke my heart. The dynamic of the throuple really peaked my interest. Seeing how loving they are with each other, fathers to Pavel and how they were open to Rhys was so sweet!
The spice wasn't overly spicy. It was a good steam to really show the *tension* and connection between parts of the throuple and Rhys. Rhys is a lucky duck, that's all I can say!

I enjoyed how N Slater has told their story in an organic nature. The lasting effects being in an abusive relationship can do to you, not sugar coating Rhys' depression, the lack of family support. It made this story so relatable for me and really allowed me to see Rhys from different perspectives. It does end on a cliffhanger, but will make you want to read the next story ASAP! I can't wait to see what else happens! :)

•Tbh, I hated the first several chapters of this book. Rhys constant talk of numbers/anxiety and Owen's possessive behavior. It kind of felt like rinse and repeat over and over again. But then Gia joined the story and I started to love it. I felt like Insta-love is a little fair fetched in this book but rather felt like fated mates.
•I had a hard time telling the difference between Val and Dmitri for most of the book. It wasn't until the end of the story that I finally felt I had a good grip on the different characters
• the plot line was pretty stalemate for most of the book, except for the smex. I did enjoy the plot twists from about 80% on.
•I actually enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, and I look forward to the next book, but I hope that my bullets above are improved because it'll make for a much better story! 3.5🌟🌶🌶🌶

So many twists

I absolutely loved reading Embracing Darkness!!! There were so many feelings I developed while reading I even shed a few tears. Rhys goes through so much in this book and manages to grow so much as well. It's just wild how one crazy ex fiance can be the cause of so much turmoil. So many secrets. So many lies and deception. I couldn't read fast enough.

The spice in this book was to notch. I mean hello mmmm trope yesssss.
N. Slater can honestly do no wrong with her writing.

ARC Review — I absolutely devoured this book, couldn’t put it down 🥵 The story was captivating, the writing was phenomenal, & I just couldn’t help but love Rhys & his men ❤️ I just wanted to wrap Rhys up and keep him safe just like his men! Those that wronged him will not know what hit them when Gianni, Valentyn, and Dmitri are done 😤 & Paval 🥺 my goodness he is the sweetest kid I’ve ever read about. The way he helps Rhys was so unexpected (to me) but made such beautiful moments 🥹 Definitely spicyyyy ( I mean 4 men of course the spice is 🧑🏾‍🍳💋) It does end on a mild cliffhanger, but in all honesty it’s not that bad. Some big things going on in the story do get handled but kind of opens the door to bigger things if that makes sense 🤣 Amazing author, amazing story, Just pick up this book, you will not regret it!

Holy Cow what a cliffhanger

This story is so mind blowing. All the different pieces fallen into place. The twist and turns are out of this world. When Rhys finds out the truth his heart and mind is going to explode. That end is a mind f***. I can't wait for book 2.

MMMM has some banter, drama, and the cutest 5 year old boy. Rhys, Dmitri, Gianni, and Valentyn come together in this twisted start. It ends on a cliffhanger that I didn't see coming.

I have read several books by this author, and this book had repetitiveness throughout, which seemed to drag it out just a bit. It seems like that could have been used to either get a glimpse into Rhys' life prior to his ex or built more of a backstory to Gianni, Dmitri and Valentyn. I've not had that occur with the other books I've read by N. Slater. That being said I am very much looking forward to the next book.

What a fabulous and dark read. It had so many twists and turns, mysteries to be solved. It was not what I was expecting at all, and in the best way. The dark and delicious story was everything I loved about dark, kinky romance. Rhys is a genius and has created a program for the govt for his dissertation but his ex fiancé is fixated on it and him. Owen is an abusive POS. He is obsessed with Rhys and this program. Rhys broke it off months ago and has been trying to steer clear of him, in the meantime he has fallen for his ex neighbor Gianni, who is in an open relationship with two other men. Is it a coincidence that Gianni and his men happen to show up to do a kitchen Reno that Rhys didn’t pay for or hire them to do? It doesn’t take long for these guys to decide Rhys is theirs to protect. The danger and intrigue that surrounds these men is thrilling. And then we have cute as a button Paval (the threesomes 5 yr old son), and Tia (Rhys’ cute 6 yr old niece), that gives a little bit of sunshine to this dark read. There is a lot that happens in this story. There are a lot of triggers from the past abuse and stalking. It amazingly done though. Rhys has gone through a lot and he is so strong. This is a very spicy story, these men are hot together. The writing is well done. It kept me rooted to my seat, I was enthralled and intrigued and devoured this story. It does end in a soft cliffhanger, as the story isn’t finished but it picked the perfect place to pause. I can’t wait for the next part of the story and I hope we get more insight into the characters, more background into what makes these three men of Rhys’ tick and brought them to the path they are on. Especially Gianni. They each have their own strengths and personalities. Val is the protector, Dmitri is the cuddly teddy bear and Gianni the playful sunshine. And Rhys is the numbers guy, and absolutely a sweetheart. And Paval is just a bundle of joy. So much of this story caught me off guard and surprised me, in the best of ways. This author is new to me but I absolutely loved what I’ve read so far and can’t wait to read more.

Oh, I absolutely loved this book! I love MM to start with. Add a dark twist and more M's? And it's better and better. This author really delivered. Gianni, Dmitri, Valentyn, and Rhys, ughhh yesss 🥵🥵 and their relationship together are just beautiful. These men are just adorable toasted marshmallows, tough in the outside, soft and gooey on the inside (not to mention delicious). And Rhys, I loved him. The way this author explained trauma and panic attacks, you really felt for the character with your whole heart. Owen though needs to F all the way off though. Every good story needs a villian. This author really knows how to spin a story that keeps you reading til the last page.... And that giant twist at the end? Holy smokes! I need book 2 asap!

Overall, I really loved this book! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I received this book as an ARC, and was to be read in exchange for an honest review.

It took me a while to get into but once I was into the book, I started enjoying it a lot! It was my first MMMM book ever and I enjoyed this trope more than I thought. The plot was good, however confusing at some points but it did not really disrupt my experience of this book.

I am not a fan of Ava nor Owen at all, and I hope that they are not in book 2 as much, however if they are then I need a big plot twist to like them or a big event (like a death) to happen.

I cannot wait to read book two of this series, and I will be reading it whenever it comes out.

This book was so good!! Spicy was amazing and omg it felt like if you took a tv show and threw it into a book!! If I wasn’t sick I would’ve read all of it in a day!! But omfg!! The ending had me so intrigued and then the cliff hanger!?!?!? I’m not ready for Rhys to have his heart broken when he finds out but that was what made it feel like this could be a tv show of some sort cause HOLYYYY THAT WAS A CRAZY WAY TO END IT!!

I just have to say that I hated Owen during this lmao N. Slater knows how to get you to hate someone so well omg!!

But like how do you get someone to hate cheese!?!? I fucking love cheese so that kinda hurt me that cheese was like traumatizing to Rhys for most of this book D:

But his men had me so excited with how well they treated him despite everything :) they were so perfect and it was really cute!!

Arc review - possible spoilers.

Absolutely loved this book. The chemistry was off the charts. The plot was easy to follow and the spice was just right.

Cons- didn’t like how gia was supposed to have know him before. The set up didn’t seem believable that they would go off and be with somebody else. Maybe he should have been introduced as they were together before his triad just a little niggle.
Didn’t like the lack of back stories. Felt there was more to be said. Would loved to know have know how they got into the life etc.
Liam - cared enough to get a restraining order for his brother but never checked in. No messages or visits.
The timescale is strange but fine for an escape read. Didn’t bother me too much but would have prefer months to the week suggested.

Pros - the spice was well written not to much not too little.
The plot twist with Mrs Fraser came from nowhere and a really nice touch with mr Fraser.
The ptsd, loved that not everything was instantly fixed. He had issues they worked around it. It didn’t feel rushed which was nice.
The fact that despite he was wired differently he was never labelled or made excuses based on this. He just was and that was a nice change.
Pavel. Nothing more needs to be said he was perfect and doesn’t need changing in anyway

Overall a good read that I would read again. Looking forward to book two. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long

ARC review

Actual rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.25
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
POV: Multiple, 1st person.

*I received an arc for my honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.*

I really enjoyed the main plot line in this story and found the concept very interesting. The author has a talent when it comes to writing proper villains. Rhys' family and Owen had my blood boiling!

The three Greek gods (as Rhys calls them) were the perfect blend of dark and dreamy! The tension between them were written well, which I love to see.
I felt that the relationship developed too quickly to be believable. And I wished there was more background story to all the characters.
I struggled to connect with Rhys' character. I'm not sure why, but maybe if there had been more communication and relationship building, I would be able to understand the attraction better.
Paval was the cutest little boy ever! Absolutely adorable, and I loved the basement scene with him.

The amount of spice was perfect. It was hot and steamy, especially the scene with all of them.

I didn't see some of the revelations at the end coming, and I love to be taken by surprise! The book ends on a mild cliffhanger, setting the scene for a potentially great plot line in the sequel. I can't wait to see where this is going.

EDIT: After reading the additional excerpt sent by the author, I am reeling! That one totally blindsided me but also explains a lot. An extra .25 star just for that!

I would recommend.

Overall i like the book and story line. The Four MMC were sweet and sexy. And little Paval was a true delight. The ending was not something i saw coming, at least not to the extent it was. The insta-love sweet but slightly unrealistic, it seemed more like fated mates, especially when Val and Dmitri were referred to as Alphas.

Something i didn’t like about it…..
There seemed to be some continuity issues as the story went along. Supposedly Gianni and Rhys had history and had both developed feelings in the beginning but as we get farther along it’s made to seem like Gianni is as new to Rhys as the other two.

Gianni, Val, Dmitri had supposedly been together for years and have a child together but Gianni lived away from them for a “job” and that’s how he met Rhys, but then moved back into his family home. But later it’s said that they were only in town for a job and it was made to seem like it wasn’t their home base even though grandma was there and the kid been enrolled in school there for almost a year.

Time lines and descriptions seemed to be just a little off and why the hell was a 5 year old never in a car seat but always on someone’s lap???

And I’m really hoping its a typo when during the scene with all four guys in bed there is made mention how “right” or whatever it feels for all five guys to be together like that in bed, like whoever’s chapter it was, was thinking about the child being there included with them at the time.

The cover of Embracing Darkness tells you that this is a dark insta-romance story, what it does not tell you is how beautifully twisted and tragic it really is. The plot had me on my toes from cover to cover, sometimes from the heart ache and angst the main character is going through, sometimes for the nefarious backstabbing and suspense, and sometimes from the beautiful love story that unfolds. Even as an avid romance reader, I was unable to predict most of the twists that occur in this story. The only real issue I had with this book was the HUGE cliffhanger that it ends on, even though I understand the cliffhanger is the introduction to book 2!
It does not tell you that the insta-love is not only between the characters of the book, but between you, the reader, and those amazing characters. As soon as I met Rhys in the first chapter of this story, I wanted to wrap him in a hug and feed him donuts. Honestly, every character elicited a strong emotional response the minute they were introduced, and not all of those emotions were love! Normally I do not care for children in my romance reads, however that is definitely not the case in this book. Pavel's role in the plot has more depth than to be another heart string tugging addition.
I highly recommend this book to all LGBT+, Found Family, Why Choose, & Dark Romance readers, or really any romance reader looking for a compelling story that is not a cookie cutter romance.

ARC review - first off, I have read reverse harem stories, but never one that was fully one gender. I was curious if that would change my enjoyment of the story. Luckily, the characters in the story for rich and layered. There is a great deal of focus on the toxic relationship with mental, emotional & physical abuse, which I felt impacted the story and developed the state of the MMC by adding so much depth. It’s a tough subject matter but appreciated how it was told and the sensitivity and authenticity of how trauma impacted Rhys’s behavior in every day life.

The intrigue and conspiracy/mystery of the book was a pleasant surprise and excites me on how it will unravel more in the 2nd book. All of the love interests have unique personalities but a great dynamic. And paval - he is a gem of a child in a unique situation but a purity nonetheless that helps balance out the family dynamics in the relationship between the men. There is definitely spice throughout the story as Rhys connects with Gianni, Val & Dimitri in addition to moments between your already established relationship.

The last layer or relationships is Rhys’s actual family. Not everyone is supportive or great with communication. The story tells a realistic family dynamic. By the end of the story, there are a LOT more stronger opinions on his sister that I hope get fleshed out in the next book. Overall I enjoyed the story of the socially awkward, intellectually brilliant, introverted and traumatized Rhys that was forced to endure personal and professional challenges while finding safety and love in an unexpected time and place.

This book is just bizzare. I was warned going in by an Amazon review who mentioned at one point it mentions four other men in bed and she said she hoped that didn't mean the child, but where would ANOTHER man have come from? I was hoping for good non-child creepy things, but sure enough from the start of Pavals inclusion he's mentioned as a MAN. When Rhys ruminates on his MEN he includes, with numbers which is how I'm sure, the child when he says "amen". MULTIPLE TIMES. Now at chapter 23, Valentyn is thinking about how he can bring this KID into things----he's talking about Rhys. SWEET. LOVING KID. So Rhys is mentally aging up a child, and one of his lovers is mentally aging him down with words. That's just CREEPY. That's on top of an insta-love (literally "I only met him two days ago but") and low stakes "darkness" "angst"

Also on top of being called a kid, Rhys kind of acts like a child, over eating sugar when stressed and unable to handle stress and literally has to be cuddled and coddled bc he's useless and all his partners tell him it's okay and blah blah blah.....it's THAT kind of book O.o the ACTUAL KID (who is 5) at one point had to hope down into the basement to soothe this dude just enough that he could shakily open the basement door. this kid, who, you know is Mensa smart and way too mature for his age and barely acts like the child he is 😬.

This book actually had me in a chokehold.
Please read the trigger warnings before reading this as it has a lot.
Also you have to be totally cool with gay characters.

NO SPOILERS

Okay so this book had me in a chokehold form start to finish. The beginning was super nice to get into, not to many information but just little bits at a time, making it easy to get into. The author doesn't give a 100% detailed look on the characters which I actually prefer because I can make my own version of them in my head while reading it.
At about 50 / 60% of the book I thought that the book was mainly just about sex between the main characters but boy was I wrong. After the 50% mark of the book the story line picked a great course and stayed there till the end.
The sex in the books was amazingly described in great detail which I prefer. So again, if that is something you don't like, don't pick up this book. Does this peak your interest? Then definitely pick up this book.
I loved it. The end is a freaking cliffhanger which normally annoys me, but now I just want to scream till the 2nd book comes out and buy it immediately when it does.

I gave it 4 stars and not 5 pure out of missing a little bit more plot to the story. But I freaking loved it and can't wait for book 2!

Not going to lie - there were a lot of 'things that make you go...huh?' moments in this story. I felt that the character building was strong, and well done, but there were a lot of things that had to get real 'bendy' to make the plotline work, and it seemed a little contrived if I'm honest. I understand the desire to represent each character in the first person, but I almost feel like it would have been better to cut out a few of the perspectives, because as more characters were added, the story lost some of the punch. Sometimes NOT knowing what everyone is thinking is the way to build suspense and tension. Not sure if I fully buy the identity of (one of) the villains, but I'm willing to see where things go in the next book. I think there are a lot of loose ends that need to be woven back into the story to make things believable, but I appreciate the effort so far to create a complex and intricate plot. And hey, even if we never quite get the details sorted, all the lovely scenes with Rhys and his men will keep you turning pages!

Better then what I thought it was going to be🙃

As stated at the start of the book, this was a MMMM fast paced insta-romance and it was pretty good. Most Indi authors have a lot of issues with the actual storyline but the worst thing being the actual grammar along with spelling mistakes. This however had none of these and I found it quite interesting with twists I was not expecting at all!

While it wasn’t 5 stars, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of the men and their boy who I loved! The storyline was easy to follow and kept you wanting to know more, the spice level was enough for the story itself but they didn’t last long.

One thing that erked me was Owen calling him “sweetheart” but then these guys did too, I just think it should have been something else because it was never a “trigger” for him?? I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️ blahhh

I’m super annoyed that the second part isn’t out until too the end of the month but I don’t have to wait long sooo that’s good 😂😂

I couldn’t put this down!

I absolutely loved this book, insta lust but plenty of angst and drama outside of the relationship to keep the story interesting. And with the plot twists/cliffhanger 😱 book 2 can’t come soon enough.

Rhys is just a numbers guy who finds himself at the centre of a world he knows nothing about. Gianni has been protecting Rhys for a while , hiding the dark side of his job from him while saving him from an abusive ex. When their two worlds collide, Gianni and his two partners are there to help Rhys survive the darkness he’s been dragged into.

They all fall hard for each other and Rhys quickly becomes part of their family wether he believes it or not, he’s theirs and no one touches what’s theirs.

Plenty of spice, a cute kid, touch him and die vibes, hurt/comfort, dark underworld, cinnamon roll alphas and a boy next door, what more could you ask for?
