The Apoxyomenos is a Roman copy of a Greek original. The sculpture represents an athlete in the act of wiping off his sweat. The word "apoxyomenos" literally means "the one who cleanses himself". Like all Greek athletes, he is depicted naked. For the Greeks, external beauty corresponded to internal beauty, as said by the famous motto "kalos kai agathos" (beautiful therefore good). Physical training was crucial for their culture, and was especially celebrated during the Olympic Games, that were so important that during that period of time all hostilities and was in between the cities, were suspended.
