alb3683926 Apple Blossoms. Artist: Charles-François Daubigny (French, Paris 1817-1878 Paris). Dimensions: 23 1/8 x 33 3/8 in. (58.7 x 84.8 cm). Date: 1873.Critic Théophile Gautier extolled Daubigny's landscapes as "pieces of nature cut out and set into golden frames." The artist first painted flowering orchards about 1857, reprising the motif almost every spring. His unpretentious subject matter, rendered with rapid, summary brushstrokes, soon earned the admiration of younger colleagues like Monet. By the time of this canvas in 1873, Daubigny, had, in turn, assimilated their high-keyed palette, evident in the vivid green foliage and bright blue sky. That same year, Monet painted two views of blossoming fruit trees, one of which is in the Metropolitan's collection (26.186.1). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Charles-Francois Daubigny.

alb3683708 The Hamlet of Optevoz. Artist: Charles-François Daubigny (French, Paris 1817-1878 Paris). Dimensions: 22 3/4 x 36 1/2 in. (57.8 x 92.7 cm). Date: ca. 1852.This peaceful evening scene is thought to be based on drawings Daubigny made in 1852 at Optevoz, a town in the valley of the river Rhône that he had first visited in 1849. (One of these sketches is also in the Museum's collection.) Although the painting appears to give a straightforward description of things seen, Daubigny is thought to have sacrificed finish and detail in order to imbue its modest subject with a poetic effect. Another version of the composition, signed and dated 1857 (Philadelphia Museum of Art), shows the view in different light and from a slightly greater distance. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Charles-Francois Daubigny.

Date: 1863.In 1860, Daubigny purchased property in Auvers, a town near Paris. Author: Charles-Francois Daubigny.

alb3648188 Landscape with a Sunlit Stream. Artist: Charles-François Daubigny (French, Paris 1817-1878 Paris). Dimensions: 25 1/8 x 18 7/8 in. (63.8 x 47.9 cm). Date: ca. 1877.Daubigny began exhibiting his work regularly at the Salon in 1838, and by the early 1850s he had achieved considerable success as a landscape painter. Water figures prominently in his imagery--notably, in his riverscapes painted from the vantage point of his studio-boat. This painting's flickering brushwork and lightened palette relate it to the works of the Impressionists, whose influence on Daubigny grew out of his contact with Pissarro and Monet in the 1860s and early 1870s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Charles-Francois Daubigny.

alb9351201 Eaux-Fortes Modernes. Plate 173. Environs de Rix (Ain) (Environs of Rix [Ain])., Adolphe Appian, printmaker, 1865, France, etching, Adolphe Appian (born Jacques Barthelemy Adolphe Appian) was a French landscape painter and etcher. He was born in Lyon and changed his name to Adolphe Appian at the age of fifteen. This coincided with his enrolment at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts at Lyon which was an art school which specialised in training to decorate fabrics by the local silk industry. Later he opened a studio in Lyon and worked as a graphic designer. He travelled to Paris to finish his studies and after he had exhibited a painting and a charcoal drawing in the Paris Salon in 1853, he became friends with the leading Barbizon School artists, Camille Corot and Charles-Francois Daubigny, who greatly influenced his style. At the beginning of his career he painted atmospheric pictures in a monochromatic palette of the riverside of the Rhone and the south of France. In 1870 he changed his style to use brilliant and striking colour in his paintings but he still continued to make charcoal drawings as well as small etchings of landscapes in the Barbizon style.
